I know this girl who "says" she quit doing meth. She writes 11:11 everyday she also makes like 20 posts a day. Is this a symptom of Psychosis or is she still on meth?

You're not supposed to let the person go having the psychosis but if they refuse any form of help there isn't much you can do and living with them is too hard on yourself. I have someone going through it and I'm at my wits end. Nobody can help unless the person is willing to do something about it.

I've had to call police and have them do a welfare check. If they see that they are in psychosis they can take them for a mental health evaluation and be admitted and put on a 72 hour hold. They can determine at that time how long to hold them till their stable. At that time their mind is more clear and can make better decisions on rehab or detox. That's my experience

It puts the users into denial of not being an addict. Therefore needs exogenous intervention by someone to make addict realise changes in behaviour/attitude.

Now that I have actually watched the episode, I am doubly impressed that you allowed Nicole to share her story and be an example of a "shining light of recovery." It is so important that we hear from addicts themselves, as well as the from the professionals helping them. Nicole could be anyone's mother, sister or daughter, and she is a beacon of hope for addicts and their families alike. Thank you for giving her a voice.

It may seem like I’m splitting hairs, but please use “person suffering with addiction” versus “addict”. It might seem trivial, but the term “addict” is accusatory and promotes emotional responses like hopelessness, blame, guilt, and shame, which can increases risk of experiencing a relapse. But I do agree, a person with past substance abuse disorder that is successfully managing that disorder brings much hope to many who feel hopeless. I hope you take no offense to my observation and comment, as we all have used the short-hand term. Something of similar nature that I recently found out is when speaking of suicide. It is best to say “His death was caused by suicide” versus “He committed suicide”. I think language is just so deeply important when we discuss mental health and related issues, since language, along with culture, and society define our perception of the world and of ourselves and that has a direct impact on seeking and complying with treatment objectives.

Was addicted to both meth and heroin. I remember the transition that happened from the use of meth specifically and how that combination with the lack of sleep is what causes the mind to experience this whole other reality where hostility is prime and you feel as if you’re the center of pain and or suffering. Thank you for your information on this subject. It’s really needed.

I have an adult child in his 30s. He has basically been on some form of drug since he was 13. 2 years ago he went into psychosis, Lost his 3 year old daughter and wife (divorce) along with his great job. At the time I thought he was having a mental break but soon discovered he was on IV Meth. He is basically homeless now, Lives in Arkansas and Im in Texas. He is always calling for money etc. I am not going to be his enabler. He says you have to die from something and he refuses treatment. During this 2 years I did get him into rehab once and 10 days later he walked out. I am at the end of my rope. I love him so much but dont know what to do. He has had run ins with the law and they too refuse to help.

My fiance was prescribed Adderall and countless other medications as a child all throughout her adolescence into her adulthood. Medications long term play a bigger roll in schizophrenia than I think people realize. Meth absolutely contributes. My late grandmother had schizophrenia. My sister and fiance also have it. My fiance suffers from extreme schizophrenia and she also used meth by needle, but honestly I think medications taken as a young girl into her adulthood okay a major roll on the brain more than we understand. Also traumatic experiences that come with life. I'd love to write a book about it one day or speak to someone about this illness. I've been around it my entire life and will continue to.

Dr. B ! I honor your expertise in the field of drug abuse. Lately I have been experiencing these episodes where I've become 'other worldly' amounts of tired, Feeling as if I do whenever I'd run out of meth. Though I'd be standing here smoking it & smoking it & still feeling this extreme fatigue ... & these episodes will typically last about 3 -4 days where I'm seriously - no joke just sleeping nearly the whole time & can't keep myself awake. Do you recall perhaps other patients that have reported mutual symptoms? Do you know of what I'm describing because I sure don't.. Is it even meth use-related? Is there ever been any man who's turned out just fine as result of using meth? Or have I got just zero chance & my goose is as good as cooked?

    • @BenSmith-jw8zy

If youre cooked youre already in the flames, and there can only be forgiveness and eternal forgiveness once we leave this realm. Just keep faith in God no matter how crazy it all seems at times and no matter how much you think he hates you, he doesnt, you are hurting yourself and you know it, so uh, its kinda like freedom for crazy people.

The next night it got stronger. By the 5th night I would lose control of my body and go unconscious but people around me told me I was walking around and banging on walls and doing weird stuff. I wasn’t on fent, I was trying to come off it. But the lack of sleep made me go crazy. It was scary because I was sober during it and I remember the vivid things/people/visions I saw

*What do you think keeps people from asking for help besides the obvious (they believe they’ll be facing law enforcement)?
*Based on the above question…., do you think a higher level of intelligence gets in the way of the ability to admit to either using and/or hallucinating?
*It seems futile to try reasoning with someone experiencing psychosis but if one attempted, how would they?

Tanya Brazil: Yes, they can be too stubbornly chauvinistically self-confident and worked up. I think it is partly the ego, partly the stress hormones and the whole system activated to just manage and survive with all the disruption. I think one has to make careful preparations as to intervention, build oneself up and knowing what one is doing, what he may say/do, have some answers ready AND not be afraid to use some calm authority. They can't judge in that state, don't understand their own state.
i find it important to respect if they prefer non-drug treatment though, if they have said so before the psychosis and you know him well. Most primary psychoses can be helped without drugs, but drugging has become automatic, and without checking for nutritional imbalances, allergies etc,. Maybe not with drug abuse, at least not to begin with. Although there are calming minerals.
