      1. The streets were wet, 2. She got frazzled by the cop on the other side of the intersection, which attracted her attention from the light. 3. She says she gets a little more nervous when she sees flashing lights - not unusual. 4. She shows she tapped her brake and had to make a rapid quick decision- possibly slide trying to stop or keep going and safely steer around the police car obstruction. She chose safety and went on through. This was clearly not a wanton act- it was just a mistake. 5 She has a clean record- not an unsafe driver.
So: The law is there to interrupt deviants, not regular people who get caught in unusual circumstances and have to make snap decisions that might not be perfect. I would have let her off. Why mess up her good record and raise her insurance for a moving violation that was obviously just a mistake?

She's a nervous driver... The officer is stopped and pulled over on the other side of the road. She's 30ft from the intersection going the opposite direction... The car has no effect on her. There's nothing to yield to other than changing lanes when the light turned. If anything she should have stopped, waited, changed lanes and gone about her business... THAT would've been the best way to yield.
Also, if she ran the light straight she would have endangered the officer...
I feel for her but on the other hand, a nervous driver can also be a dangerous driver... :-/

No one has expressed her actions correctly including herself. You only have a few seconds to react when reaching any traffic lights control junctions. I make a point to focus 100% on the junctions when approaching to look out for:
    1. Pedestrians (Almost all pedestrians are looking at their hand phones when making road crossings)
    2. Cyclists
    3. Electric scooters (I am not from USA)
    4. Lane markings
    5. Road signs.
    6. Road works
    7. Most importantly traffic lights
Bear in mind there is only a few seconds to absorb all these when approaching the junction.
That woman must have been distracted by the police vehicle with flashing lights, stared at it too long and by the time she start to re-absorb the environment at the junction the lights already turned red. There should be no distraction at any junctions. Can you imagine a large bill board with flashing neon lights showing interesting advertising? Do you think the safety statistics for that junction will remain the same?
It is unfortunate for her that there was a distraction to take her attention away for a few vital seconds.

The judge definitely wasn't wrong here. While it's understandable for people to get nervous, she very explicitly did not obey the traffic signals that she definitely could have obeyed and should have obeyed. That's several seconds where the light was already red. She also had time to process signaling, which means she should have processed the rest of the situation. But turning that soon would make me a bit concerned as to whether she even checked her blind spot before changing lanes. In addition to pedestrians, there's also cross traffic visible. That's 3 separate directions she could have caused a crash while distracted.
While the placement of the police cycle may seem like an issue, it would actually be worse if he were further down as he wouldn't be as visible around the curve in the road. That's also where the vehicle the officer stopped pulled over
The judge understands that this could have ended very differently. Nervous drivers can be very dangerous drivers and cost peoples' lives by being accidentally unpredictable. Plus, the general rule is that is you see any potential obstruction ahead, you slow down or yield, so nervousness should have turned to being more cautious.

I think the judge gets that. But he's trying to make a point that you can't be that easily distracted while driving. You need to be able to react *well* to unanticipated situations because next time, it might not be a sudden police car in your lane, it might be a child running into the road. The woman's argument that she got nervous and completely lost track of the process of stopping for the light in favor of moving over for the police car is an indication that she really shouldn't be behind the wheel because she just can't multitask and deal with unexpected situations well enough.

I actually agree with the first lady, but she should have explained more clearly that the police car ahead is blocking her lane and she got distracted trying to figure out where to go next, and unfortunately that's when the light turned and she couldn't think fast enough to what to do next. I can reasonably see many people falling into the same problem if they are in the same situation. It would be unreasonable to think that people would purposely run thru a red light in front of the police. Of course, isn't it super fun to sit in the comfort of our home and judge what others should have done and what is reasonable or not?

So it was a character issue for her “no one’s even understanding my point, and now I have something on my record and there’s nothing i can do about it” that’s what the tears are about.
On top of that she’s a shy person obviously who couldn’t make her case properly. I myself am not a nervous person at all, but my wife is. So i can totally get why she’d drive that way in the video and start crying in court.

So, she kept on driving, assuming that the light was yellow, and checked her mirrors and turned on her signal accordingly to switch lanes. She was saying that no sane person would intentionally run a red light when there's a police car RIGHT THERE. She got justice because of her poor way of explaining the situation, instead of getting pardoned for her mistake.

If you're in the borders of an intersection when the light turns red, it's questionable whether or not you could have stopped after it turned yellow-she knew when it turned yellow and she had plenty of space and time to stop. The policeman was parked behind a car he'd stopped..on the "other side" of the intersection! If she would've stopped as she was supposed to, she would have been completely "out of the way" and the policeman may have been gone by the time the light turned green again. By choosing to run the yellow light while changing lanes and, ultimately, the red light, she took an irresponsible risk of possibly causing an accident and possibly hurting and/or killing someone

She even indicates.
