  • "Not-a-well-made-video" production presents: Tightening a Boiler on a La Pavoni Manual Lever Machine
New gaskets sprayed with gasket adhesive. Boiler reinstalled. Flange tightened by hand, then with tool from Stefano, and finally snugged with breaker bar and a cheater pipe. Please feel free to ask questions. [As always, it's not a well-made video, but it's real and unedited, like me.] (8+ min long)
    Gasket adhesive: amazon.com/gp/...
    Gaskets & boiler tightener tool: Stefano's - www.espressoca...
Cheater pipe: salvage pipe from a remodel on our house

I agree with James. I've restored loads of these over the years and I agree it needs to be tight but that's way over the top in my opinion.

This machine belongs to a friend who has ALS and lives out-of-town. The first time I serviced her machine, I tightened the boiler flange and it still came loose. I was determined that it would NOT come loose again....and it hasn't.

I've always tightened mine by hand which is why it keeps coming loose! I'm surprised you tightened it so much but my guess is it won't loosen again. I appreciate your effort and the video!

IMHO- the most important thing I did here was I used gasket adhesive on both sides of the top gasket. That should secure the boiler to the base. I went extra lengths on this machine because my friend uses the portafilter handle to stabilize the machine and I believe that's the biggest culprit to loosen the boiler. I have another video of me tightening the boiler flange on my machine and I didn't bear down as much or use a cheater bar.

    Thanks for the video!
I must say that while I enjoy my little machine, it’s harder to upkeep than my cars breaks… which means that there is a design flaw somewhere…

I really haven't had upkeep problems. What continues to happen to your machine?

Bruce, bud if they want a machine on the ISS your the man. Not sure what torque you went to but wow, I’m working on a 64 all brass boiler, have found heat works a treat. Good vid but🤙🏼

Bruce, what happens when you need to replace the gaskets again in the future, But they have that gasket adhesive on them? How difficult will it be to get them off then? Thanks in advance 😊

Hi, Dean. I assume that I'll need to scrape and clean. Most LPs survive their lifetime without needing to remove the boiler or replace these gaskets. So I have little worry about it. Also, the gaskets get worn down when the boiler rotates a bit. This won't happen here. Think head gasket on an engine block. I think the benefits outweigh any downsides by a long shot.

Thank you Bruce for this. I'm just getting started with rebuilding my 1977 Europiccola. May I ask what brand of gasket sealer you are using there? Or at least what type? Keep the videos coming. I sure enjoy them.

I can never get my boiler tigh enough. What vice modification did you make to hold it?

    • @BrucePappas
      @BrucePappas  3 роки тому

Today, I'm using a piece of angle iron with 2 holes in it, inserted into a vice. It's much stronger and steadier.

@@sangriamunky - you can try an oil filter wrench or a home-made tool. We have examples in our FB LP group. I haven't had much luck with tools other than Stefano's.
