What I think they aren't understanding is that change doesn't start with the general population, it starts with the people who are willing to make the effort to try something new. Chrome didn't become the default by targeting tech illiterate people first and foremost. The sad thing is that you can already see Arc is having an effect on other browsers and the way we think about web browsing, but it seems like they're giving up on that to chase this other idea.

The thing that gets me is the omnibar thing. Several times recently Miller has said that their direction is being driven by Apple saying that it's the most-used text box on the mac. But I don't think that's significant in the way he thinks it is or means what he thinks it does.
Okay, firstly, he points to google turning the url bar into a search bar too in 2008. But he doesn't ask why they did that. The question he should ask is what was happening WRT computing and the internet at that time. The answer is smartphones were becoming huge and taking over how people interacted with the internet. And for reasons of space the url bar of a mobile browser *has* to be the search bar, too. So companies started doing that in desktop browsers to bring their products more in line and make it more seamless.
But from a UX perspective it's actually kind of worse. It opens up the door for more results than you would otherwise get, and it takes more steps. You can hit ctrl T and *then* tell your browser what functionality you want that to have, or you can have ctrl T be opening a new tab and ctrl K being focusing the search box. It's one less step.
Besides that, there's a cart/horse question here. Does the fact that people interact with this one text field the most mean that you should add all new functionality to it, or do people interact with it the most *because* that's the only way to do several different things? I mean if you combined other functions together into a different text field then that might take the number one position.
It's a very strange thing to base the strategy and philosophy of an entire company on.

As long as they are going to keep maintaining Arc, I'm not bothered. Even if they weren't, I have over a half dozen browsers installed, for work purposes, and I'm only attached to the more privacy focused ones. Arc is just a tool for me to get my work done.

They probably felt their employees were slacking since there's not really much to do besides talk about changes and updating the app, so they decided to start from scratch so their employees actually had something to do.

To me, I am saying goodbye to Arc today as I am writing this. The matter is deeper than the browser itself or the company's target, it is with their one-night-stand philosophy and dropping the mic mid performance. It all depends on the users' perspective and i believe that for working professionals like myself who prefer stability and building an ecosystem and a workflow around a product like Arc, companies like this are not trustworthy and not serious. Their total paradigm shift without maintaining a stable affinity with the user, dropping all midway to migrate to a new job, seems a bit immature to me. How about they re-re-reinvent the browser again in a year from now? What should we exactly do ?
Well, this is sad, I hope the company makes it and gets some higher regards towards their audience.

I love Arc and everything that it brings to the table. But my problem with it, is that the windows version is really really bad. It's missing so many features that the mac version has and it is very unstable(at moments) and buggy as well.
I just want a seamless browser experience between my mac and windows machine and that was one of the reasons i started using it.
At first it was amazing and i had hope that they will update the windows version and make it like the mac one but over the months i got more and more disappointed and now after watching their video i think that this is the straw that broke the camels back for me.
I'm looking forward to Brave or the Zen Browser. But the main problem that i have with the Zen browser is that it is in a alpha stage and in Brave's case, it's chromium (yes, i know that Arc is chromium as well, i want to switch to FF's engine but i love the features)

What I hate and love in arc is:
    - browsing open tabs (hate it when it goes to pinned tabs rather than opened tabs)
    - hate pinning tabs from e.g. YT shorts - no way without opening new tab / window
I love they broke so much bookmarks so i started using the onetab extension more (event forked it and made it more mine), youtube watch later and mini-lists rather than tons of bookmarks.
I also turned off almost all max ai - I'm developer and I hate renaming tabs or downloads functionality.

Yeah, I think that it's probably a bad idea for them. Like maybe if they were Microsoft or Google or Apple but the thing is about the people they're supposedly aiming this new product at as they usually use default apps, and it's not like those companies I mentioned aren't also going to be implementing easier and easier tools for their target market. I think that maybe they are used to being a startup development company. And now that they got a solid product they just don't know how to handle it or get bored. . I think overall it's probably a bad idea.. especially since Arc is such a good product and I think they like you said could implement ways to make it better for normal people. I also think a lot of people still don't know about it. The windows version is not very good. And there's still a lot of things they could do with Arc and it saddens me that they're not going to. It also got me looking for a new browser. But I guess time will tell. I just don't think they're in the position to do what they say they want to do. Though who knows but I do know that I probably won't be around for it. Just too bad. It's rare. The company like them can come out and get as big as they got. Oh well, good riddance. Maybe I'll install Microsoft edge lol not really but still.

I am a long time Arc user too, but I am not too perturbed by their announcements. Honestly, I liked Arc in the early days, when it was really simple. IMO they have just added way too much to it these days. I mean, who actually uses their "Boost" tool to restyle websites they visit? That must have taken a LOT of engineering time for no real user benefit. I am actually looking forward to a simple browser again. As the old business/startup saying goes - if you don't make yourself obsolete and reinvent yourself, then someone else will come along and do it for you...

  • @conceptrat

I think the point here is that the average people aren't really interested in what the browser is but just that they can get to something they are looking for and find more of that. Like the Waymo. They just want to get from A to B and not have to deal with driving or dealing with a driver.
My mum got a video player to watch movies but she got frustrated with getting the video player to work after the wrong buttons. There was too many things that could take her away from the simple need to watch a movie.
Arc me to be careful though. They might inadvertently step of Microsoft's product Recall or Google's upcoming new version of ChromeOS.

In a Verge article a month or two ago Miller said basically that - one of the things he touted Arc 2.0 as doing was seeing that you were browsing HomePods, knowing from your browser history that you read a lot of Verge articles, and giving you a pop-up which asked whether you wanted to read the Verge's HomePod review. Every time he says "bring the internet to you" I think that's the kind of thing he's talking about.

Yup, afraid so... I knocked it on the head months ago as it was strangling the life outta my M1 Mac Mini..... Even my new M4 loses too many resources to it over a few hours. I dip in twice a day for my well curated easels that house my Daily Dashboard but very disappointed in TBC to be frank.
I LOVED ARC and was a mega advocate for it, turning friends, family and colleagues onto it over the best part of the last year. I just feel they lack direction, got dazzled by all the "new and shiny" and tried to throw the kitchen sink at a browser and forgot what we REALLY use our browsers for......
If somebody got under the bonnet and optimised it I'd be back on it like a shot but as it stands its become unusable for me.
Currently using Vivaldi for the use cases I used Arc for and this runs 24/7 in a multi tiled configuration with auto refreshes set relative to each tiles content, and Brave Browser in the other 50% of my screen for everyday browsing and temporary stuff. Vivaldi is overly configured TBH but its handy.

Feature flags when the problem is fundamental with the product is a dumb dumb dumb idea.
They chose the most sensible solution for the problem they think they are facing ... the only problem is that, the problem they think they are facing is nonsense. They are already reaching the best and largest audience for their product and they are about to compromise it. Their audience will grow over time purely based on merit and it might in fact break through if they continue because in reality its the only way to break into an established market.
Idiots never get sophisticated tooling, but what they do instead is to religiously and generally go with trends mostly in generational chunks once they reach a certain socio-cultural saturation point.
And you have to get your demographic to that size and ride that wave across the point where the generational zeitgeists are being manifest. Idiots wont learn new paradigms, they cant even explain or substantiate their preferences but it comes down to pretty much "I struggled to learn this tool through developing hacking work arounds and cargo cult mechanism for placating my frustrations and I am damn well not struggling to learn some new hacky work arounds in another tool if I am not forced to". Those people wont change, but new people will eventually come along who are more plastic and will develop exactly those religious mechanisms for your product instead. I hate that those people exist and personally I wouldn't want those epople anywhere near my product but if your obsession is growth and hitting the largest demographics ... thats how you have to do it. Or you can revolutionise ... which they think they are about to do in which case they offer something people cant refuse to use because their previous tooling is now defunct.
If they go down this route they should be prepared for people to start putting in the effort to replicate their existing product ... hell, I am already doing that over webkit and someone more motivated to finish the product will come along and actually do it in and release it.
