Stonefly nymphs (Order Plecoptera) are of a wide variety of sizes and are usually common those of medium and large sizes. An interesting fact is that in studies of food availability and food eaten by the trout is not uncommon to determine a preference in this order. An important aspect of this order is to prefer the stones or logs of good running rivers and large water oxygenation, their larvae are not good swimmers and being detached from the place to which are attached at the bottom often maintain a rigid position while resulting in the current until they are deposited on the bottom if you do not end up in the jaws of a fish on the way, during the drift usually in an upright position or curved, statically and in many cases with belly up . I think when it comes to imitating nymphs Stone are two very important aspects, one is that imitation achieved quickly get to the bottom and stay in that area of flow, and the second is that imitations must have a high degree of realism. This type of flies often have negative side that have a texture too hard, which makes fish the retain very little time before expel, but this aspect is offset by the large number of strikes that we get, in these situations we must have an excellent control of the line and be very fast in nail when we feel the strike.

Nice demo Ruben. The copper wire turned out nicely . Very nice video
I might be stating the obvious but do click on the "show more" as Ruben gives so much detail. His videos are so gripping I forgot to do this myself ! I have learned so much more by having a good read after watching the video.
Wow, Great Tying! A wonderful fly for the showcase!
Thanks!
You make the best flies ever!

Thanks buddy, suscribe if you want to watch more in the future. Best regards
Ruben, do you think the wire legs might lower your hookup ratio?
Absolutely stunning fly!
Thanks Lane!
Thank you for the video! Like! Great idea! also manufactured bait with your hands!
Increíble, te felicito Ruben, gracias por mostrarlo!!!!!!!
De nada. Saludos

Superb!
i dont know what your minds was i would eat it up lol great job Ruben tight lines everyone!!!!!!
Beautiful work Ruben. Almost too good to fish with! If I got snapped off a fish and lost a fly like that I think I'd have a little cry! I'm going to have a go at one of these. A touch smaller though for our U.K stonies!
they're fairly stunning! I see why some people just tie flies and don't even fish! you've given me some ideas to take to the vice! cheers.
What kind of tweezers are you using in this video??
You are a true artist man. It's a real pleasure watch and learn the way you make this flies. Manu thanks from Brazil.
monstruosamente bella..............excelente trabajo....
Gracias Gerardo!
Nice fly.. What is that you used for paint/color?
Wondering what music this is? Love the instrumentals
Great looking fly. Do you make them as a hobby or to really fish? Secondly, if you do fish them, do you find them really any better than impressionistic patterns? Thanks in advance for reading and answering. I know you're quite busy. All the best, Sean
Te quedo chipocluda tokayo very good
Gracias tocayo! Abrazo
Great looking fly. Love it. But the guitar solo music the entire video?!
Thanks buddy, you can turn the music off and put other music you like. Best regards
Very realistic Ruben.
Where do you buy the Vitreaux Lacquer? I looked on the Web and couldn't find it. Is it used to paint stained glass?
Hi Buddy, i am making my own laquer, with the most usefull colors, if you want send me an email and we talk when its ready. Regards. info@rubenmartin.com.ar
music?
Great looking fly Ruben! I've watched this several times trying to reproduce it. I'm getting close to it. Just was wondering what is the material you use for the eyes?
Hi Chad, thanks, its burned monofilament. Kind regards
impresionante el realismo
Exquisite tie! Perhaps mono legs would help with fish eating and hanging on longer?
Yes, rubber legs or some feather legs will add more movement. best regards
Thank you. Whatever it is I can't find it in the US so I guess I'll look for something else.
That is friggin fantastic. What gauge copper wire are you using?
Hi Jhon, i use about 1mm cooper wire, but you can tie this imitation with other leg material. I will be tying in November in NJ at the International Fly Tying symposium, there are only 10 places for the class, if you like to be there let me know and i will save you a place. Best regards!!
@@rubenmartinflies thanks for the info and the offer but I'm sure I won't be able to make it up there
Saludos
super tying as always who is the song by? shazam keeps showing the wrong name
Thanks my friend! best regards!! dont know really, will try to find out
As a fellow tier, most excellent in likeness, as a fisherman, how the hell do you get it to crawl on the bottom rocks in a realistic motion? One of the weird things I have noted about hyper realistic looking fly's sis that in practice they often cannot be fished the way the insect behaves, I think it is one of the reasons emergers/etc. work so well is can realistic tie and realistic present.
Hi buddy, is the same as perdigons and czech nymphing and other techniques, the important thing in some situations is to put the fly on the mouth of the fish and they will strike because of the current conditions, when i fish smooth rivers i fish with other flies, thats the beuty of fly tying and fly fishing. Best regards
What kind of noise is that and what kind of fish like that ?
Music, and trout from patagonia argentina does

Saludos!!
Solid music
Thanks Red
Ruben: have you ever considered using Japanese Nymph Legs instead of wire? There is a great deal that can be done with them to make them look quite realistic. I love those little pliers with the flat tips that you use.
+Ruben Martin Can't get the pliers in the U.S.
+Ruben Martin FYI - Dai-Riki makes a hook model with the shape you had to make.
A W E S O M E !!! :)
Abrazo
how much do you charge per nymph?
It depends on the fly, but no more than 2,5 usd x a trout fly
@@rubenmartinflies your realistic stone fly nymphs
2,5 usd

:)
Wow thats a lot of thread
Great fly to catch us fly fishermen :)
when nymphing for trout they dont care, actually i think its better to have more lively materials as they wont spit it out as fast or something that will catch to their teeth, dubbing and cdc combo :)
watching underwater trout feeding videos you can see that they will try lots of stuff and spit it out.
Hello my friend, I understand your point in traditional fishing with nymphs, but this imitation is more thought for the European fishing techniques with nymphs such as czech nymphing, french nymphing, spanish nymphing or polish nymphing etc, these techniques have gained tremendous popularity among the fishermen with nymphs throughout the world for their effectiveness and several world championships won, these techniques are used perdigones, micro nymphs and even get to use nymphs made with molds of lead or tungsten and painted up when one needs a lot depth in a very short time, Are strikes lost by having such rigid materials? yes, but sometimes you have so many strikes that it does not matter and even in some places it is the only technique that works, we in Patagonia use the Spanish technique where there is no fly line directly and fishing with tippet 4x, 5x in tension, this makes you feel the strike exactly at the moment the trout attacks and you can nail it immediately. In the end I try to show different techniques in my channel so that people can use them if they like it or not. Best regards
@@rubenmartinflies Hello Ruben. I meant no harm with my comment. I love your videos and you tie very good flies. I just would never tie this particular fly because it takes a long time and as much as I love to tie flies I like to fish even more. I do lots of czech style nymphing. Tight line no indicator pocket water :) Originally from Bosnia and I am very familiar with weighted flies etc.
I like simple flies that catch fish but also admire flies that look so realistic like this one. But in my opinion realistic flies are more to catch us fisherman then catch fish. I might be wrong. I just dont see the need to go realistic for trout especially not with nymphs, for an example you are fishing 4 x tippet direct line mostly pocket water I assume. That fly needs to be heavy ofcourse so it can get to the strike zone but does it have to look realistic, I dont think so. Trout dont have time to inspect your fly. In my opinion no need for realistic flies. Its more profile/color that will entice them to strike than if it has 2 legs or 4 or 6 and if legs are perfect etc. All the best and I love your videos.
Its ok with your comment, but im nor agreed with you, if you came to fish patagonia Argentina in some rivers in many ocations if you dont have a great imitation you wont catch a fish, i didnt say this is the only nyph that catch fish is just one imitation but we have in our rivers and lakes very selectives wild trouts and sometimes you have to go very detailed with the fly, if you think in dry flys why people take so much trouble on imitate such as small insect like a mayfly with every details, thats because many of us saw the fish reect our fly, or why one person came to the famous soft hackle if the fly wont float enough, well in some moments you will need a fly like that to catch fish and i prefer to have that special fly in my box if the moment como to me, i love tying as much as fishing so i dont have any problem on being a little longer on the vise for a fly. Have a good day
@@rubenmartinflies I agree that some rivers have more selective trout than others. I have never fished Patagonia and that is on my bucket list. I have fished lots of rivers and I believe when it comes to dry flies the attention to detail is much more needed than when it comes to nymphs unless you are fishing slower pools where trout can really inspect your fly before they take it. If you are fishing pocket water/fast water attention to detail of a fly isnt as important as its profile/color. I am pretty sure instead of wire if you put cdc the fly would have same effect if not better even though to us fisherman the fly looks better this way with wire. I must admit I am jealous of your home rivers. All the best :)
I sat and ate lunch with yaz yamashita at work and talked about his designs I know just exactly how he tied his but can't bring myself to do one , would not do him justice yours are great but his were just a bit better but then again he spent hours making one fly
you do a great job thanks for the info this my sons channel my name is jim
I couldn’t bend the hook, so I snapped two. Then I got annoyed and didn’t want to waste hooks so I literally heated it up with a torch and bent it
Hi Sam, yes, not all the hooks can be bended, so a little heat up will bend the hook great, you can buy bended hooks, but are a little expensive, so i wanted to show this technique. Best regards
Use Mustad hooks

Okay, so I am new to fly tying.... and I also am a bit of a geek..... when he first started wrapping the foil at the very beginning, the thought in my head was, "that looks a lot like magnesium ribbon"................ Anyone who knows what happens to magnesium when it hits water? It would be a horrible fly tying material! Laughed at myself all the way through the video!
I'll give you a thumbs up just for the f****** heavy metal music
LOL
All that and I’ll still get it caught on a bush in 5 drifts
Tone down to a non obtrusive background sound...to where you do not notice it...your craftsmanship will draw many more viewers.
The metal good as it might be overpowers the action portrayed.
Just an opinion of a professional.. Could make the difference from a few k views to a m views.
👍
Saludos
Lost me with the music. Too long doing the legs. Sorry Good bye
Great video from perfect flytying.
But the "music" is absolutely horror😵.
Don't you do that ever again, please.
Love your fly tying vids.......BUT really dislike the music, commentary is more helpful than horrid music Cheers
I speak spanish bud, you can always mute the video and listen to the music you like... dont forget to suscribe and activate notifications for new videos!!
Fly: so-so
Music: appalling
I went to your UA-cam page to see your tying skills but didnt see anything, I must have clicked on the wrong page. Could you link me to your flies you tie??
Hi Chris my web page is www.rubenmartin.com.ar you can send me an email to info@rubenmartin.com.ar
descent video, but a little vocabulary would be good!
Hi Jack, i speak spanish. Best regardds
Ruben Martin Flies, Ruben, I hope you didn’t take offense to to my statement. It was not meant to be offensive. You do tie a really awesome fly. Like the other guy, I’m a little concerned about the wire legs. I’m going to try it with a more forgiving material.
Hi Jack, no no i dont offend at all, i only speak spanish so we decide to show techniques on the videos and not to speak, this fly have a lots of legs versions, thisnis onluly one, i tie it with rubber legs, all kinds of feathers, plastic broom bristles, sadly indont have the time to upload everithing. Best regards my friend
