"On the 40th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima, over three hundred Japanese and American veterans returned to the island together in peace. It was one of the last major campaigns of WW2 - fought on a tiny island only eight miles square. When the battle was over, nearly 30,000 American and Japanese men were dead. Tens of thousands more were wounded.
This is the story of Iwo Jima, told 40 years after the battle. It follows four Americans and two Japanese as they retrace their memories, exchange stories, and pray that what happened on Iwo Jima will always be remembered and never repeated -- servicemen who survived the hell that was the Pacific War. It originally aired on May 27, 1985.
For many of these brave men, their words presented here are the first time they’ve spoken about their ordeal since 1945 - a silence that has haunted many of them to this day.

I had the honor to meet an old soldier who fought there. I was at a flying J in VA fueling up. I went inside and there was this old timer standing there and I was cutting up with the cashier and he asked me where I was from . I told him I was from my mothers womb. He laughed and told me I was a smart ass and that he fought in IWO . I stopped my mouth stood straight up and offered a salute and thanked him for his service.

At 00:37 to 00:39 I am the USCG ET2 with the mustache. This was a historic day and I was very humbled and proud to have been one of the USCG that hosted these most Honored Marines! I will remember 1985 always as well as our great nation through history.

My best friend Gary Begley's father was in 82nd Airborne div. during WWII. we would play war and we had the best toys, lol. SS gear, helmets, grenades, American and potato mashers.... great memories of my youth. The greatest generation was exactly that.... Gary Sr. Had PTSD and no one knew what it was at the time.

My dad fought the entire campaign with 5th Marine Division, 26th Marine Regiment. He was only 19 at the time. All his life he would never speak of the horrors he saw. He would only occasionally say "How the hell did I get off that island without a scratch." My mom said he did have nightmares for many years, what we now call PTSD.

I am a veteran myself and I can truly understand their need to return to Iwo Jima, not to take any pride in their actions on the days and weeks of fighting, but to lay to rest some of the ghosts that have haunted them since those awful events. I was lucky that the limit of my combat experience was such that I never had to fire on an enemy and I thank the heavens for that mercy, unfortunately my son was not as lucky and saw combat during two tours in Afghanistan, events that he doesn’t want or can’t talk about, even to me, his father, but I know that he is haunted by something, and that in turn haunts me, but I was again lucky because he came home physically as good as when he deployed, but I am not so sure mentally the same, what the veterans of Iwo Jima faced and did can’t be ever adequately put into words, not just for the allied forces but for the Japanese as well, and one cruel irony stands out, if the Japanese commanders had not brainwashed their forces, and civilians, into believing that the Americans were evil and would treat them badly or just execute them if they surrendered then they might well have fought just as hard and long but would have survived once defeat was inevitable and they surrendered, once again those that sent their young men into war didn’t fight themselves, they just stayed relatively safe in Japan. Thank goodness these brave men, from both sides, were able to meet, maybe not in friendships but with respect and forgiveness. I salute all those who fought and those that died to make our world a tiny bit better than it was. R.I.P Lest We Forget. Per Ardua Ad Astra. 😔🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸🇯🇵👍🇺🇦 And thanks for sharing this very interesting and emotional pilgrimage with us all 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸🇯🇵🇺🇦

I’m just a retired Army Infantryman and fought in two wars. It’s hard to listen to the stories these men are telling about the details of what war does to a human body, I know exactly what those wounds look like and how hope is the one thing we hold onto tightly above all. Yes, I’ve experienced losing buddies from enemy action and we all experience survivors guilt until our last day on earth. I’m grateful to Christ for being with me in those wars, it was very hard for me.

Its a strange coincidence that Iwo Jima is now considered by vulcanologists to be the most dangerous volcano in the world at present. Back in 1985 you can see that the veterans find it hard to recognise the beach because the island had already risen by about about 2 metres since 1944. Apparently the tsunami risk if/when there is a major eruption

Two of the Marines were misidentified for many years until an investigation was able to correctly ID the men who raised the flag. Rosenthall was more interested in his photo than accuracy in identifying the Marines. Seems like the two Marines who were originally identified as raising the flag would have come forward and corrected the error. They did not.

Nothing but thanks and respect for the men that landed on this hell hole. These brave men had balls of steel and should be respected an remembered forever.🇺🇸 So pathetic and sad the kids today are not taught this in history class anymore.🥲 I was saddened a while back when talking to some young people in their late 30s that didn’t know what or where Iwo Jima was.🥲🙁
