    For £89,995, Aston Martin will sell you a very special version of the V8 Vantage, dubbed the N430. It's got a 430bhp 4.7-litre V8 engine, a manual gearbox and bespoke paint and trim finishes. But is this just another high-powered Aston, or is it something more special? Steve Sutcliffe decides.

      Really? I thought it looked amazing with that yellow lining in the grill, perhaps the yellow on the roof and mirrors are a bit much, but it's a classic look.

      It's based on Aston's old racing colors, so it's a heritage color.

    I too agree that Astons, especially the newest ones, look so much/way too much the same. With the current generation of cars, even being a car nut that can spot subtle difference with other cars, they look so much the same that to be sure, I have to have a look at the badge if I see one in a parking lot to see if it's a Virage or a Vanquish. My youngest son, who got me into cars in the first place and taught me most of what I initially knew about cars and performance driving, made a road trip of it back in 2012 from downtown San Diego, California where he lives to Austin, Texas to watch his first Formula 1 race in person at the inaugural F1 race at the Circuit of the Americas. He saw one of the newer Astons in the parking lot and even he had to look at the badge to see it was a Virage.
    He and I both agree, in the case of the Vanquish, the previous gen car was by far a better machine. Yes it has it's gearbox issues and such, but exterior-wise, especially in black, it is the real deal. Wild fender flares, great design all-around...that car is something special. The Vanquish name was so appropriate for that car. It looks, well, monstrous. It has that stance and shape where, it were a person, it would be someone you would not want to mess with. It's muscular shape due to the fender flares and such made it a very imposing V-12 GT car.
    But the Vanquish of today, almost the complete opposite. No more imposing than a Virage. It just has minor design differences (carbon bits here and there and different sills) when compared to the latest Astons like the Virage. The Vanquish no longer has that presence of a beast like it used to. Sure it had it's quirks, but the previous gen car was a V-12 GT with the presence of a monster, that would "Vanquish" anyone who tried to mess with it (yes, there were quicker cars, but none with it's presence).
    When the newest Astons came out with their all new styling, I was expecting something totally unique when it came to the Vanquish. Something with the same imposing feel to it, at least exterior-wise. Something with huge fender flares like the old one and the same overall monstrous feeling of the older one. But no. It came out looking like all the other newest Astons like the Virage, to the point where unless you are a total Aston nut, you have to look at the badge to see it's a Vanquish. Just sad.
    Aston Martin is a car maker I've always admired, from their road cars to their GT racers, but it's just sad how they almost completely missed the mark. Yes the newest cars are pretty GTs, but that "Beauty, Passion, Soul" just isn't there anymore. Sad.

    The N430 feels more relevant and desirable today than it did 9 years ago. I’m seriously thinking of one. If you search Autotrader for anything manual with 400bhp and low ish mileage, not a lot comes up. R8s, M2s, a pair of M3s, overpriced Porsche Spyders, GT4s and GT3s, a VXR8, a Corvette, a few Mustangs and a couple of Aston N models.

    Given that a 991 Carrera S starts from £84k and this Aston has similar performance to that car, is the the price of £90k for the Aston really that big of an issue?

    • @CJM44.41
      @CJM44.41 10 років тому +1

      And considering you can very, very easily put £6k worth of options into the 911 as well without even thinking about it really shouldn't have anybody worried about the Aston's price. Think people look at the head line stats much too often nowadays, only searching for 0-60 times (as Steve mentioned) & as a result write off cars that aren't under the 3.1 second mark or whatever they justify as 'nippy' in their mind.
      I wouldn't be surprised if the Aston was much quicker than the suggested 4.8 seconds either. Look at how quick the E92 M3, E60 M5, C63, new Panamera Turbo, RS7 etc actually are, the list can go on almost forever. The M3 had less torque and a bit less power, weighed about the same & was in the low 4 second range.. Food for thought.

    No idea on the quality issue people say. Had a V8V for 4 years put 37km on it. No issues. V12V for 3.5 years and nothing wrong in 26km. And I do give it the beans taking the V12 quite often up to 310kph over here in Autobahn land. I could get a 911T etc etc.. but I have no interest in a VW. If you look at Porsche, all their cars are evolved on a 911. They tried with 928 but joe public did not like them. Yes, other cars are faster than my V12V.... but I do not see people driving them hard around mountain bends. And.... everyone walks past a 911T without a second glance. Turn up in a suit in my V12... says a lot. If they made the V12Vs in manual would think about it as that sound... oh the sound.

    How do Aston manage to get such little performance from high powered engines? Granted they are GT cars but I'm pretty sure 450+ hp could move a motorized shed with some trailer wheels on the bottom to sixty in at least 4.5
    I completely understand that this car isn't about acceleration but really how the hell do they make the damn thing so slow? Especially when theres a 190 MPH claimed top speed. Is the transmission shit?

    • @HesteBremse

      The engines are outdated, in fact a lot of things are getting quite old now in the Astons, still great big engines but as the video also states, don´t mention CO2 emissions and fuel economy. Newer developed engines might miss some character but they put out more power and less of the bad stuff. Will be very interesting to see what AMG will make for the coming Aston Martin engines.

    Final edition V8 Vantage maybe? It might be fun to drive and all that, but lets face it. The V8 Vantage is very outdated now, and the replacement can not come soon enough, if Aston is going to survive.
    Aston is losing money now, while all their competitors are registering record sales. And the very obvious reason is, there has not been a completely new model or engine for almost 10 years. And meanwhile unsurpricingly the competition has stormed ahead and left Aston looking just very overpriced for, what you actually get.

    Well, I know, I know...Aston are beautiful blah blah. Thats what everyone is going to say. IDC. The design is old. It makes me think they can't do anything else because ALL of their cars look exactly the same. There is really no new engineering. They still use all the same old engines that are dreadfully outclassed. There are now production V8s that make more power than Astons V12. The "handcrafted" interior really just means things will soon start falling off and the stitching will be awful. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't making that much money. The sad part is, Porsche (well with the 911) and Aston almost do the same exact thing, but Porsche is doing it sooo right, and Aston Martin is doing it soooo wrong.

    • @AHYL88
      @AHYL88 10 років тому +3

      You pretty much hit the nail dead on with what you said; they've been playing it safe for far too long now and all the models are really getting old and boring as well as too similar (DBS and Virage, I'm looking at both of you!). The DB9 and V8 Vantage have been around for 11 and 9 years respectively, and since then, so much new stuff like Jaguar's F-Type, Bentley's newer Continental GT, Audi's R8 (and the upcoming replacement), Porsche's 911 range, Mercedes-Benz's SLS AMG (and their new upcoming AMG GT) and so on have all been or are about to be replaced with newer models. And from that evidence, Aston has practically stood still, despite the small updates they made to their models over time; I do love Astons still, but they definitely need to move on now, do something new and replace these models.

      Adrian Lee Yep, I love Astons too, but they really need to step into the present or they may not exist for much longer. They no longer have the engine problem because for the next models AMG will apparently be making the engines, but they definitely need to solve this non-creativeness with their design. It was just really disappointing when even their hyper car (One-77) basically just looked like a vantage with a widebody kit, although a beautiful widebody kit. and not to mention, quality control with the interiors and the overall interior design needs a drastic update.

      Hmm yeah definitely; Aston Martin is pretty much a small independent operation that will struggle to survive on their own with their small and aged model range, unlike those I mentioned which are either very big like Audi and Merc with their very wide range of models or are under a umbrella ownership like Bentley is. That AMG joint venture will be interesting and a very good leg up for them to replace their old and dated engines with lighter and more powerful ones. Very true, they've basically been under the one-trick-pony syndrome with their designs, it pains me to say; they made one design with the DB9 and just recycled it repeatedly for the rest of their models with slight adjustments, and even the newer Vanquish seemed to borrow some elements from the One-77 and the DB9. The One-77 is a bit subjective; looks great, but not sure of the headlights and the air scoops just below them. The interior I agree definitely needs a refresh; it looks severely dated and aged next to the 911's.

      Adrian Lee they do have the DP-100 VGT they can make to change their design language
      "There is really no new engineering"
      the one-77 presented some new engineering: using the structure of the car to feed air into the engine :)

      bucketslash11 Hmm, I like that besides the front which looks too lazy and similar to the Ford GT90, but it can't really be counted as it's just a concept for Gran Turismo only. And even though it's been built, it'll be in extremely limited numbers like the magnificent GTbyCitroen which only had 6 built and cost $2.1 million each.

    That paint job is totally tasteless. What I expect from a 90's rover MG but not an Aston Martin. For crying out loud just design a 'new' car already!!!

    most overrated car in history? just my opinion but the design is always the same and this one is not good looking. DBS is the only aston martin that really looks great..
