    My old uncle Hank was a diesel mechanic starting way back in the 40's. I went to an auction with him back in the 80's & asked him how come the Caterpillars were bringing so much more money than the rest of the stuff. He simply said "Because they're worth it". I later went to work for Cat & their attention to quality control was the most impressive I've ever seen.

      While CAT’s are good motors, I always found when they failed, they failed catastrophically. Especially the 3406B’s. But that being said, nothing like seeing yellow under a peterbilt hood.

    As an h/d truck tech in the late 70's early 80's, the 1693's, 3406's & 3408's were the gold standard for truck engines, commanded respect and admiration from drivers and techs alike. If there was any way you could afford one you got one. The high pitched "snap" of them firing was music to our ears

    In the USA, glow plugs for diesel engines seem to be considered unnecessary. It seems perfectly normal there that the starter motor has to agonize for a long time before the first cylinder can collect the necessary heat for auto-ignition. You can tell by the fact that white clouds come out of the exhaust for a long time. There is another way: The engines from 2:03 and 3:09 show how engines start with intact glow plugs.

    • @keithammleter3824
      @keithammleter3824 Рік тому +6

      Most likely those engines reluctant to start have something wrong with them, in conjunction perhaps with very cold weather. I worked for a Cat engine dealer and all our engines started very readily.
      Glow plugs and other cold starting tricks are only required on small (car & small truck size) engines. Glow plugs are often used on diesel car engines where the engine is actually a gasoline engine with a diesel head conversion, eg Mercedes 180D, 220D etc. Since these are based on gasoline engines, compression could not be made high enough for good starting without glow plugs as stresses on bearings would be too great. Where teh engine was designed from the ground up as a diesel, there is no problem.
      For a diesel engine to start, air temperature in the combustion chamber must increase sufficiently before top dead centre is reached. Combustion chamber volume goes up as the cube of cylinder bore size, but combustion chamber surface area only goes up as the square of bore size. So the ratio of volume to area improves as engine size goes up, and thus heat loss is less in larger engines.
      The engine at 2.03 is a Cat 3516 which does not have glow plugs.
      The engine at 3:09 is a Cat 3208 which does not have glow plugs. How do you know it wasn't started warm anyway?

    • @holmes1956O
      @holmes1956O Рік тому +1

      Rosa beha Not true. Flooding the cylinders is the main reason for white smoke in a cold start diesel. Most cats especially the 3406 starts best when you leave the throttle alone and crank it for a few revolutions then slightly add throttle. They start every time even in very cold weather like that with very little smoke

    • @oddieboi
      @oddieboi Рік тому

      Has nothing to do with being unnecessary, has to do with efficiency, they run smoother, have the potential to make a lot more power, and certainly not least, to pass increasing EPA emissions standards. There's other benefits but aren't as substantial, DI engines run better going through the mountains in the east and western US states for example.

    • @holmes1956O
      @holmes1956O Рік тому

      The combustion event is dramatically different than a spark ignition system.
      Diesel engines are built to be much more durable than other engines, from development and architecture to better metallurgy and machining processes. They also operate at lower RPMs which equates to less wear.
