Hey mate, I really love your channel and cannot believe you are not bigger. I believe it will happen because your content is absolutely amazing. Your far better than mark weins etc.
Hello! I was looking at the prices for the paella and i noticed that there is a minimum 2 person for the dishes- will i have to pay double if im eating solo?
¡Hola! My husband and I are visiting Madrid, Granada, Valencia & Barcelona (in that order) from October 23rd through November 6th, 2018. We’re looking forward to trying your recommendations. Hopefully there will be a Valencia video before we go. Is it typically a warmer or colder Fall that time of year? I’m trying to figure out if either short or long sleeve shirts are ok and either a heavy or light jacket? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Sorry my question isn’t food related. You guys have done such a great job on that subject. 😉 Thank you!
Hola Maria! Thanks for the kind words! Happy to help with this. You'll be looking at the warmest weather in Valencia, where highs can be in the mid-70s, and coolest in Madrid where highs are in the mid/low-60s. With that in mind, a mix of short and long sleeves will probably be a good bet, with some layers like cardigans and scarves that you can use in the morning and evening but ditch at midday. A light jacket should be fine! We have some blog posts on the topic, which I'll link to here! madridfoodtour.com/what-to-pack-for-madrid/ devourbarcelonafoodtours.com/what-to-pack-for-barcelona/ devourgranadafoodtours.com/what-to-pack-for-granada/
Love your channel, great content. I’m going to be in Barcelona in September and I wonder if you have updated the list of best places to eat Paella in Barcelona.
Hi Mariella, thanks so much for checking out our paella video! We are currently updating our post on paella in Barcelona - it will have fresh info next week - but you will be able to find it here: devourtours.com/blog/where-to-eat-paella-in-barcelona/ Hope this helps, and have a fantastic trip!
I’m researching my first trip to Barcelona and am enjoying your vlogs very much! Can you recommend somewhere that serves good paella for a solo traveler? I’d love to try this restaurant but could not eat that whole portion myself. Thanks!
Hi John, thanks for watching! We have a full blog post on where to eat paella in Barcelona (devourtours.com/blog/where-to-eat-paella-in-barcelona/), however it is true that many places require ordering a minimum of 2 (very hearty) servings. 🥘For the perfect quantity of incredible paella, consider joining our Tastes & Traditions of Barcelona Food Tour (devourtours.com/tours/barcelona-tastes-traditions-food-tour/). Guests try authentic paella at the last stop, a restaurant in the fishermen’s district that's been open since the 1950s.
I get to spend Nov 01 to Dec 2018 in Barcelona have an apartment near the "old town." I intend to photograph the architecture, study the museums eat tapa.....Maybe drink beer and local wines
The authentic paella is from Valencia. I was born in the city of Valencia and i know what im talking about. The paella in this video is made of seafood, and the authentic paella is made with chiken, rabbit, green beans, tomatoe and artichokes... and the best place to have a good paella is in Valencia of course. That paella in this video is quite good anyway like a variation of paella made with seafood.
Yes, you're completely right about paella's origin, and what it's made with. Absolutely delicious! We just wanted to show curious travelers in Barcelona that they can find great rice there, too! It's unfortunate how many tourist traps there are that serve microwaved "paella" all over Spain. Cheers, and thanks for watching!
I will be in Barcelona in a month (May 11 - 13th). I only speak English and am primarily a vegetarian who occasionally eats seafood and some dairy. Can you recommend places to eat and how to order tapas and food that contain no meat of any kind? Thank you.
@@DevourTours Thank you for your prompt and informative response. I am learning so much from your videos which are preparing me for a wonderful time in Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoy your presentations and Yoly is a delightful addition.
You absolutely nailed IT!!! That crisp caramelised rice...heaven! It was so awesome to see the spots I've enjoyed during my visits to both Barçelona & Madrid. Try Sagardi just down from El Barrio Gotico on Carrer de l'Argenteria and let me know what you think. By the way Hala Madrid...HALAAAAAAAA!!!
The rice dishes at Can Solé range from 20€ to 40€ per person, and you'll find there's often a two-person minimum when out to eat paella. The range in prices depends on the ingredients you go for. James and Lauren are enjoying the 20€ per person "arroz a la paella con frutos del mar" whereas those on the higher end of the price range feature more expensive kinds of seafood, like lobster or special clams from a certain area.
Hi Brian! Yes, you can find paella made with other proteins such as beef, chicken, and rabbit. Veggie-studded paella is also great! Just keep in mind that some places prepare their different paellas using seafood stock. Be sure to double-check with the waiter!
Hi Arvi, Lauren and James ate at a great place called Can Solé; you can find the menu with prices here: restaurantcansole.com/carta/ In addition, don't miss our article all about Spanish paella! devourtours.com/blog/all-about-spanish-rice-paella-and-beyond/
I have heard that truly authentic Paella does not contain fish or shellfish. Is this true? If so that would be great because I am allergic to shellfish.
Hi Walt! The traditional paella from Valencia (paella valenciana) features chicken, rabbit, snails, and beans but no fish or shellfish. But because each establishment has their own twist on paella, we recommend double-checking before ordering or sampling. In addition, make sure to avoid "paella mixta," which is a surf-and-turf type of dish. You can find out more in our blog post: devourtours.com/blog/best-places-for-paella-in-valencia/ Hope this helps!
There sure are! We'd recommend reserving, and in some cases you may even need to order your paella ahead of time: madridfoodtour.com/top-places-for-paella-in-madrid/
Thanks for the lesson on paella. I'm on a tour of Spain now. Dinner in Barcelona included a black rice paella, apparently black due to squid ink (!!) being used in its preparation.
In Puerto Rico, we call the paella de la Valencia, which is paella with seafood. You see being an island there were no meats just seafood. It was the Spaniard who bought over the heavy meat but the Taino native Indians on the island only ate fruits and seafood. I think the reason for it is to distinguish from South American countries have it with meat and I believe in some parts in Spain that have it with meat as well,' is that correct?
That's so interesting! The original paella valenciana is actually made with chicken and rabbit, no seafood. Since then, tons of variations have popped up across the country, including seafood ones!
Nothing is much catalan here, maybe except the "paella" as you call it. But paella is originary from València, and in Catalonia is made different, mainly from seafood.
Paella is indeed from Valencia, and visitors to Barcelona are lucky that they can enjoy such a delicious and authentic one at Can Sole, like the seafood one here that Lauren and James enjoyed!
Devour Tours my mother used to cook it with mussels prawn squid seashells and a "sofregit" with onions garlic pepper tomato.... It was very tasty and delicious but. How I miss it now!
It was, now I also remember that she used the remains of the fish to make some fish broth, that she eventually poured over the rice, until it reduced, to let it cook a little longer, and get all the fish flavour.

Had homemade paella in a village valdeganga. And my girlfriends grandmother used snails also... the whole dish was amazing . Piece of art !

Despite having not catalan roots like the 'arròs a la cassola', the paella is a feast here, mostly among the families gather in Sunday.
Cheers !
