Hi there Mark. That looked like a perfect adventure! Sorry to hear you've been struggling with arthritis but it sounds like you're doing all the right things to keep you walking. There's nothing worse thinking that you might not be able to do the thing you love - so hopefully your ankle will keep getting stronger so you can get those big hikes in!
I had surgery on my back when I was 16 and have lived with pain on and off all these years - I was told I'd be in a wheelchair by 40! I'm 56 and not stopping yet! Keeping moving and active with a positive mindset is my strength.
How great is Pete! 82 and still setting a good pace... fantastic! And those canes he'd carved were beautiful. Loved the fact he preferred to keep them! Lucky that he gave you one.
    Great little stealth camp.
    Great video, really enjoyed it!
All the best Mark, Jenny 😊

Hi Jenny, yeah a short one but great. Re-getting fitter and stronger it has been a project. I’ve been on it obsessively. It can only turn the tide on it meaning I’ll be back out there. It sounds like you are the ideal example of what is possible. Don't listen to the world sometimes listen to yourself - be self-determined. A good lesson. As for Pete he too is an inspiration and a generous man - love the cane as much as I did the stealth camp. Being feral is so good. Thanks Jenny. Have a great week ahead. Mark

Really good to hear about how you've been coping with your arthritis Mark and what you've been doing to keep going. Great that your friend Pete is still walking at 82, I'm sure we'll both be doing the same. He's a talented guy carving his own walking sticks, lovely that he gave you one of his. You had a great night with chips, sausage and curry sauce and a camp in Powys council car park. I felt mellow as a cello too watching you on your adventure Mark. Hay & Brecon Farmers are always fabulous. I loved the make-do walking 'cane,' 😁 Sorry to hear your ankle is causing you problems. You're doing the right thing by walking, of course... so many people simply give up. Great that the weight of the pack didnt appear to cause too much of a problem too. I'm currently re-reading The Folklore of Radnorshire. I know Radnorshire is now part of Powys but it always seems to feel much more ancient & interesting. back in 1890 the Shakey Bridge was simply planks & wires. Happy walking! 😊

Mark, a very practical and bargain priced personalised cane that I am sure would last for ages, though that hand carved original from Pete does trump it👍 Walking more mindfully sounds like a good way to go to help with the arthritis, along with all the other things you are doing to manage. That is some ironwork in your legs! It has been a strange old Summer here in Northern Ireland and has felt Autumnal for most of it. That is a cool age for Pete to be out hiking (even with all his ironwork) - I hopefully have all those years left in my legs too. A cool stealthy spot for an urban camp and a good time to rise before it all came to life with people👍

Ha, yeah that's right gerry - no image concerns here with the 49p offer. But Pete's? I have that for a long time now. For sure if I'm going to come out of this inflammation it has to be mindful. I'll get there metal and all. If Pete can do it with his metal I can and as you say he's at a good old age now. It was without doubt an odd summer both sides of the water. As for the camp - love finding these urban spots. Thanks gerry. All the best. Mark

I didn't realise you were in such discomfort .. I don't know if this helps but I've learned one important thing , keep my feet close together , no large steps . . You might be right that you need to get through the pain during exercise .
I got some issues with my fenoral bicep after s slide in 2018 . I stretched as much as possible but one day i went swimming and got into the hot tub , managed to stretch a bit further past the pain
I hope you get this comment , we s rooting for you brother .
Heres to rivers and following the flow . Heres to the coolness and health.
I know this sounds weird , but i talk to my legs . . Sometimes they tell me they want to feel the ground , so i tske my eyes off the ground , slow down and read the ground through my feet , i think this is mindful .

Hi Mark, that was a good day out walking with Pete, he's doing great by keeping active at 82, I hope I'll be able
to follow his example and still be wandering out for long walks in 10 years time, I think the thing is to keep active and forget about speed, just do things at your own comfort level, which brings me on to your ankle. Sorry to hear it's playing you up so much and that it's arthritis, as you say, there's things you can do to help like travel lighter and a bit slower.
I'm sure you already know and maybe tried some of those gel pads that you can put inside your boot, either the small ones that go just under your heel or the complete whole foot sized ones, I've used them not because I had any issues at the time but they just gave a little more comfort, now I find I need them when doing the longer walks. The ones I had were by a well known brand name that is something like Scholls, but I eventually lost them and bought some others online
from one of the big on-line sellers, well they were a bit of a disappointment, they were more like a solid bit of clear rubber/plastic that didn't have much in the way of flexing or cushining, so get the best that you can find. The other thing is to get boots or walking shoes that have some decent flexibility and absorbtion in the exterior soul, especially the heel, I bought some good boots last year but the souls are quite rigid and this causes me some pain in the soul of my foot towards the end of a 5 to 9 mile walk. The boots themselves are comfortable, but I've realized the lack of flexability is causing a slightly harder impact with each step, not that noticable at first but of course it all mounts up with each pace over longer distances.
Have you considered walking poles? I think that by using 2 sticks or proper walking poles you'll find you will have more of a natural pace and even weight distribution - same goes with thoses gel pads that I mention, put them in both boots even if the other ankle isn't playing up, they are still effectively taking some stress off both feet, pre-empt any possible problem with the other foot, so to speak. Anyway I enjoyed the video Mark, the make-do bamboo stick was good thinking and it worked, saved you a fortune too. Loved that little camping spot. You get out to some brilliant places, so once again thanks for sharing.

Hi there Roo-thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Excellent vid Mark. You had me wincing with the ankle break story 😬 but you’ve got to do what it takes to keep you getting your outdoor fix, even if that means some painkillers.

Hey there Mark! Finally a moment to breathe! I haven't gotten my car back and it looks to be an expensive visit. I thoroughly enjoyed your video, and it was very cool for your buddy Pete to bring you a new walking stick just when you needed one. The universe provides! I'm very sorry to hear of your troubles with arthritis. I have some info that may help. Years ago I was having a lot of trouble with it myself. My right hand was almost curled into a claw, and both knees were in pain 24/7. I could put my hand on my knee and feel what felt like like grains of sand moving around. Maybe dissolving cartilage? Anyway, I started taking a really good supplement that did the trick. It took about a month to start working but now I have zero joint problems or pain. This supplement would likely be too pricey for you have shipped over there, and I haven't found any other supplement that has the same ingredients. Maybe if I tell you what's in them, you could find something comparable over there. They have the standard Glucosamine/Chondroitin formula, along with MSM, Vitamin C, Zinc, Manganese, and the most important part, Collagen. I'm convinced that it's the collagen that makes the difference since it helps to rebuild cartilage. The added bonus it that the Vitamin C and Zinc give quite a boost to the immue system. Be careful with the Ibuprofin tho, my mom took it every day for her arthritis and ended up with an ulcer. I was going to PM you this info, but decided to put it here in case anyone else can be helped. Without this supplement, I swear Mark, I would be a cripple! Anyway I hope you can find a similar product. It's difficult to find any that include collagen, and I think that's the important part. Cheers my friend!

Sorry to hear of the expense there Cynthia. These unexpected costs do happen highlighting the importance of putting money to one side each week or month. Ah, yeah - the universe. Pete was very kind with the cane but I lost mine on the way to visit him. My absent-mindedness. As for supplements what’s the name of the supplement you are speaking of? Your journey sounds very interesting and I’m sure these ingredients are right - I’ve read similar somewhere including that regarding Ibuprofin. Well, many thanks - always appreciated old friend. Have a great week ahead. Mark

Nice one Mark , that was good Pete gave you that stick, a lot better than your 49p one lol. The nice wee stealth camp done the job , i've done that once myself and Robin camped behind the shops on the Isle of Arran . Hey mate i hope you get on the multi day hikes again , hopefully your ankle plays ball buddy ..enjoyed that Mark ..cheers Stevie ...just followed you on Insta 👍

Hey. stevie - I'll have to agree with you about the stick. It was fun in the farmers store though. Good to hear of your own doss down behind the shops - I do like that about trekking the fun places we find ourselves. Well, me too bro - I wanna get back out hiking multi-day. I'm on it. Thanks, my friend. All the best. Mark

Hi Mark, such a shame about the Arthritis, but sounds like your doing your utmost to get as fit as possible, how funny you walked shaky bridge then watched the walking weatherman do the same, great your still getting out and even urban camping, well all the very best cheers nigel😀

Yeah, Nigel it's been trouble. But I'm pitting everything into it to turn it around. For sure that was bizzare weatherman walking appearing at the same place. It doesn't often happen that. Re-the camp always love being feral. Many thanks, Nige. Take care. Mark

Lovely countryside there Mark, looked very peaceful. Glad you got the cane sorted, liked the custom cane lol.
Is a cane better for your ankle than trekking poles?
I looked at your X Ray (I’m a doctor 😂) - wow you did a proper job on that , looked like a Webber C fracture repair! Basically totally mashed and unstable fracture as you say - poor you mate what a horrible injury , no wonder you have problems now in that joint. Well done for soldiering though it, how annoying having that pain as a long distance walker! Best wishes mate

Hi Adam, without a doubt it's beautiful around here - rolling and green to the door. No, the walking poled are better than a makeshift cane. I had fun with that though. Hey, yeah of course you're a medical chap. Yeah, this was a bad injury that's come back at me years later. But I think I'm winning with a combination of things. Nothing will stop me from doing what I love. Well, thanks Adam - I appreciate that. All the best. Mark
