I have been playing jedi academy since 2003. I was 10 years old and I still play the mod called Moviebattles 2 actively. It has had a great impact on me and it still does so thank you for making the best star wars game ever made. I laughed how humbly you said that the reason why it is still the best is that no one else has tried to make a good duel based game after it.
It is really refreshing to hear out the guy who actually made the combat system after all these years. Awesome interview and good job.

Mike Gummelt thank you for making such an amazing game, I just showed this game to my best friend, and found out something brand new while playing my 30+ run through, I cut down the tree at the beginning of the game and it killed me while falling over, the amount of care put into those games is a big part of why people still love them, so much thought was put into the combat and terrain movement

It's insane and very sad how things have changed, when he started talking about how they tried to make the game as moddable as possible...

Why never? Maybe in 10-20 a dev will try it. I'd gladly pay 100$ for a game of that quality. I really don't know why no one is doing a singleplayer SW game where you can create your character and progress like in KOTOR improving your force powers and choosing your side , become a Jedi or A Sith and then fight other force users, while following a compelling and intriguing original story that's not simply a good vs bad story. So many SW fans would want a game like that. I just don't get it. Sometimes I think about dropping everything I'm doing and try becoming a game dev to make a game like that.

Disney + EA = no such game
The closest thing to such thing we might get is a dull grindfest with hundreds of DLCs like Dragon Age Inquisition. Also, it will have a story set in the new canon, so not even the story will be interesting for me.

That part at 6:10 where you have the enemy Sith on a narrow bridge over lava is fun if you have rank 3 grip because you can just force choke the Sith, move them over the lava, then let go and watch them fall to their deaths. It’s equal parts hilarious and satisfying.

I would like to take the chance to say a personal thanks, Mike. Your work inspired me to join the games industry.
Until today, both of them are my favourite games of all time. I really enjoyed Elite
Force as well and always hoped that the Star Wars license would be
staying with Activision and Raven. When Battlefront was released afterwards, the combat system made me feel like a clumsy Jedi and I never understood why follow-up games never reached the level of quality that the Jedi Knight games had. And it was not just about the lightsaber combat system. Jedi Outcast in particular had a phenomenal multiplayer, something I've been missing since then. I was leader of a clan with 80 members and all of them were playing different disciplines. Some enjoyed dueling, others played the extremely fast CTF mode that made Unreal Tournament or Quake look like a snail game. Was even one of the games in the ESL Pro Series and my first step into eSports.
When I think back, Jedi Outcast was the game that caused me to join the games industry. I started modding Outcast and contributed to a Lord of the Rings total conversion (yes, because of the saber combat system) with a map of Helm's Deep. Later went onto Movie Battles II and when we felt that the aged engine could no longer support our gameplay ideas (render distance), I started "The New Era" mod for the Source Engine with 80 developers. Unfortunately ran into the typical mod problems and couldn't get it released. But it was a blast! We tried to stay true to the Jedi Knight games and people really appreciated it.
I really discovered my passion for game making during these projects, started studying game design, worked at Ubisoft for a while before starting an indie studio and now recently moved onto VR. My dream would now be making a competitive lightsaber game in VR if only I had the license to do it :)

    • @mgummelt

Thanks for sharing your story! I definitely miss the days back when we played our own games with the community and they all knew us and we'd have more direct back & forth. Oh, and I've messed around with some VR stuff, too - Unity and SteamVR make it really easy to prototype VR games!

    • @DarthHunter5
      @DarthHunter5 7 років тому +11

Yes, I really enjoyed that time for exactly that reason as well. In the German Jedi Outcast community, we had a "mapping academy" where some experienced devs helped interested newcomers into level design. Movie Battles 2 even went a bit meta when there was a community map team - a mod for the mod, so to say. And the community really felt attached to the developers. I remember when someone once handed me a "certificate of insanity" because of how I built an entire mountain landscape with brushes. It's been a long time, but If my memory still serves me, I think it was Kenn Hoekstra.
The last developer I've seen doing these community relations that closely were Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment when they were developing Stargate Worlds. Already in the pre-alpha, they scanned their forums for enthusiast and constructive community members and invited them into so-called "strike teams" that would self-organize and continuously test different aspects of the game and give early feedback.
Today, when I'm playing recent Star Wars titles like Battlefront, I can't even set up custom clan servers. So much eSports, community and modding potential in there, but they're not taking advantage of it. I don't think any of these recent games will ever reach the lifetime of the Jedi Knight series. I mean - 15 years, sheesh!
As for today's technology: True indeed, we're actually working heavily with Unity right now, building common space VR multiplayer experiences for location-based entertainment. When I think back at how much time I've spent with tech3 or source just compiling assets on the command line...
I remember how we once tried to make a Movie Battles 2 map that would take place in a space battle. You'd have to escort a piece of cargo into the hangar of a Venator that was under attack and fly it to a rescue ship. We essentially gave up on that project when we made a first test of the Venator (which was 1:1 scale) and the maximum clipping distance that wouldn't shoot down the engine would cut off half of the ship xD

Because of people like him who focused on making a great game, as well as also focusing on making it mod-able has really made these games a lot of fun and stand up to this day.
When Mike was asked about how he feels about how his game is still considered one of the best light saber combat games out there these days I was thinking in my head that I wonder if hes surprised there hasn't been any new ones since then. And sure enough he basically says something similar.
It is so surprising one of the best light saber combat games to come out was way back in 2003 and there hasn't really been something since then.
Heck the last great star wars game I was interested in playing would have to be 1313 which ended up getting cancelled, as well as the battlefront 3 being made by that one company before EA got the exclusive rights (because of Disney being stupid).
And it's a real shame we never got another sequel. Just image how amazing a sequel could have been. Maybe they could have focused a bit more on the story for single player (the one thing that was a bit lacking in Academy at least to me). And maybe even better graphics, more chocies etc.
Thinking about stuff like that just makes me depressed though because there is no chance we will get anything great for at least another 6 years or so? Until EA's contract is up. And even then Disney might be stupid and give them the rights again. We are missing out on great star wars games right now because of all this.
Anyways, good job to the makers of the Jedi Knight franchise and we miss you all the time, especially these days.

I love that in jka, you can recognize players by their playstyle. how they move, how they attack, how they block. truly amazing system. a game where I might be able to beat one specific player easily, only to get destroyed by another player, which in turn gets owned by the 1st player I mentioned ^^ there's just so much personality in your fighting style

I think a lot of people would love a new Jedi Knight, or remastered versions. It's really a shame that noone has done an SW game with the lightsaber fighting in focus as was mentioned in the video. In Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy you could choose and develop your own style and actually needed skill to defeat your opponent. I believe I don't have to mention the duel system which I didn't see since those games. I think it would be worth making it considering the Star Wars movies are coming as well. I hope that someone will make such a game like Outcast or Academy. Help me EA, you are my only hope! :D

I had no idea that the creator of Ultimate Quake went on to do Jedi Outcast, two very memorable games from my youth. Ultimate Quake was a mash-up of all the properties you loved... Star Wars, Predator, Xena, Dune, D&D, and more! I spent hours playing Ultimate Quake against bots just enjoying the power fantasy and did the same with his Star Wars games. So glad I can put a name to those experiences now!

Loved this game thank you for participating in making it. I can imagine jedi pacifist routes but this was a fun game that made some sense for a Jedi to get into the fighting. Good writing with good mechanics made this one fun. Maybe I'll make Jedi Negotiator some day but to quote a master "The negotiations never took place." Mostly because the storm troopers keep opening fire without... Well it was a fun game at any rate.

Thank you for this interview! Raven Software did an amazing job. The Jedi Knight games should remain in history as some of the best games ever made (not just Star Wars games). Mike's game design approach was spot on. Player freedom and moddability are two essential things for a great game, IMO. They allow us to express ourselves and to play the game in various different ways, and this increases the replay value immensely. I still play countless of retro games for such reasons. Lifelike graphics and realism are cool things to have in a game, but that's not enough for a fun experience.

The Jedi Knight series is, to this day my personal and all-time favorite series of Star Wars games and video games in general. Jedi Outcast in particular was what got me into the larger Expanded Universe of Star Wars and made me into the Hardcore Star Wars fan I am today. I also play Jedi Academy and Outcast to this day, primarily the mods Movie Battles II and Knights of the Force.

Absolver(customization to move sets and appearances, free flow from one move to another sometimes into another style, the ability to learn bit by bit from enemies and open arenas) meets for honor(visceral up close melee action with grapples and headbutts mixed in with a sense of scale that you can turn a battlefield in your favor & objectives outside of killing each other) would make the prefect foundations for an awesome light Saber combat game

  • @DragoanDell

I think it's amazing how Mike started out in a modding scene and eventually got work making video games. I played jedi outcast and academy and it is what made me get into a modding scenes and get a degree in developing video games. I also agree that I can't think of any other star wars games that had such satisfying lightsaber combat as these two. It's amazing just how simple of a system it is, but then games like the new battlefront just treat them as "click attack and the game will decide where the lightsaber goes."

Just stumbled on this video and wanted to say how Jedi Outcast was super awesome trying to simulate the real feel of lightsaber. I NEVER managed to play any star wars title and enjoy lightsaber combat since those games.
And of course the first thing to do in Outcast is enable cutting of limbs! Yay! great memories!
