Michigan judge reprimands "idiot" who entered virtual arraignment under profane display name

- A judge in Michigan was not entertained when a man joined a live Zoom arraignment on May 11 under a profane name. St. Joseph County District Court Chief Judge Jeffrey Middleton was presiding over a virtual arraignment on Tuesday when a man joined the call with the name “Buttf***er3000.”
The judge asked the man for his name, which he gave as Nathaniel Saxton.
Middleton pressed, “Your name’s not Butt f***er 3000? … What kind of idiot logs into court like that? What’s your name again?”
Saxton denied typing “anything like that” and tried to apologize to the court. Before moving onto the next case, Middleton said, “I’m going to put you in the waiting room. You can sit in limbo for a while and think about what you call yourself online.”

What would they do if the judge decided they are not serious and have to travel and be there in person (which he did in a few cases)? It is lack of respect. One might be physically at home, but they are still in classes or at a trial/arraignment. So the same rules apply.

I strongly recommend Judge Middleton court feed. If anyone has any interest in court proceedings. He seems to be fair and a caring human being. Which I find rare in the justice system now a days.

@@richardfrancisburton6833 If you are in a law class you should know there could be many reasons why the screen name was named like this and that the person might be innocent and clueless how that happened. Also the judge saw him in the waiting room and explicity invited him to the court room for public shaming, instead of contacting him privately to point out the problem.
@@bazz303 it was his arraignment, it's not just a class. When you are the defendant and come showing up with that sort of name, it means you don't have respect for the courtroom. It was later found his sister had set up his zoom account and the judge excused him telling him to tell his sister that he almost got into jail for contempt of court.

I don’t think anyone would willingly call themselves that, even to troll. I think one of his friends access to his phone played a prank on him and gave him the inappropriate name.
While the responsible thing to do would have been to check one’s display name before joining the Zoom call, I’d be willing to give said person the benefit of the doubt and say he really didn’t know.

I've seen a rare Judge that I'd call worthy of his/her position. But, that goes for nearly every walk of life I guess.
I can understand this judge's impatience though. he regularly goes viral for incidents like this and gets trolls sometimes in his calls
I've watched a good number of this judge's courtroom and he's been nothing but patient, but firm, fair and very understanding.

Any lawyers care to elaborate on the legality of holding someone in contempt for a screen name on zoom? Seems very illegal & borderline authoritarian. But I'm no legal expert.
He was just suspended. If you show up to court and call yourself buttfucker3000 when asked your name, you'd get a very similar reaction. This judge is very fair and patient, if you cared to look at his other work.
A court is a sacred place with formality so it's fair the judge made that decision.
Judges do have a God complex that is disturbing but in this case dude was just in the wrong you can't show up to court with a screen name like that without it being perceived as disrespectful.
