  • Most tales of Vikings are obsessed with their exploits in the west...we choose instead to row east and south with them. This 2nd person account puts you in the role of Wulfgar in a historically and chronologically accurate fictional tale of Vikings in the east.
    In this episode we head to Constantinople...

      I have LOVED this series. Are there any books you would recommend that are a fictional narrative like this? Or perhaps you have written one?

      @Judd Johnson sure I can recommend quite a few good historical fiction authors. Any periods you prefer?

    As a researcher and book dealer, I'm impressed with the quality of your videos. First person narrative is a delightful way to share complex knowledge without devolving into the boring drone of so many videos. Your narrative structure invites the viewer into the primary subject's experience of Viking social and family life, new locations, languages, sketchy situations and interactions with other people groups. The skillful weaving of the different social and cultural backgrounds adds dimension to the narrative. Lastly, your handling the complex background information with such a light touch means that it supports the story, never overwhelms it. Bravo!

    Before I forget - I wish to compliment you for your rather neutral American accent but particularly for your very respectable pronunciation of names and words (imo) of foreign origin; not only in this video, but others which you've posted.
    I have come to enjoy your first-person voyages very much, to my own surprise (since I'm a picky bitch), and have subscribed, expecting more stories of this quality.
    Thank you for your shared effort. Cheers!

      Cheers and thanks for watching. I am Canadian and first generation as my parents were immigrants from Holland/Germany so speak those languages as well which helps a bit. Appreciate you watching. Cheers!

    Saying that the Romans didn't keep as clean as the Vikings is a little weird. Unlike the other medieval kingdoms Romans kept the same hygienic standards as the old empire. Yes the Vikings were clean but not mote then Romans. Heck even the medieval kingdoms of Europe were far cleaner then was supposed in media. There were bathhouses in Paris as early as the 800s.

      By this time the public baths had mostly fallen out of disuse and the majority of the city lived in squalid filth...this isn't the Rome of previous centuries but was mostly to counter the Viking = dirty...which they were not as a society.

      Was interesting as I had read somewhere that the VIkings show portrayed Vikings as too clean and sterile...there are a LOT of things wrong with that show but if anything I think it pictured them too dirty :)

      The US had bath houses in the 80’s friend. Not sure I would equate those with cleanliness. Are you familiar with urban vs non-urban hygiene standards…cities can’t help but devolve.

    Vikings were cowards who couldn't wage siege warfare.

      @Fatherofheroesandheroines Рік тому +3

      That's far from true. Cowards they definitely were not. Sieges were few and far between but they did such as the Siege of Paris.

      @@TGBurgerGaming Are you aware of the kingdoms they founded? The trade routes they established? Yes also had exampled where they raided, tortured but to distil Northman history to just that is a bit of a disservice imo. But that is your opinion so fair :)

      @@TGBurgerGaming so your modern assessment would be Special Forces are cowards because of their tactics and strategies. Of course you are most likely a lifelong military expert not in classroom theory but on the ground. So cowardly to always push foreign boundaries while outnumbered and using novel navigational methods. Provide a link of true wonderful stories as you must have examples of tribes that did much more wonderful things than the Norse…
