Wow, an escapee tappet. Come back an play nice with the others. 🤠. That's nuts ! The mysteries of an old vehicle never cease to amaze me!! Fun to unravel them. I love when previous owners/ mechanics conveniently leave out bolts, nuts, lock washers, and washers. This is a "given".
I had this happen once while trying to remove a stuck cylinder head. It happened when I attempted to free the head by performing the trick where you turn over the engine--with the plugs in place, hoping the pressure moves the head. (BTW: The rope trick works better.) At the time, the rocker arms and tappet rods where removed, and there was nothing to secure the tappet. I'm glad that I serviced the covers or I would have missed this and wondered why I couldn't lash the valves.

I think they replaced rods and when they did it stuck to the bottom of the rod and got caught in the housing lol. Thanks for watching Anthony
Really helpful! Thank you! I did the exact same thing trying to unstick an MGB
Glad it worked out for you 👍

Yeah it perplexed me for the longest time, but when I opened her up boom 🤣
I would have checked the left hand side as well while it was all dismantled....
