- This clip is an excerpt from the program "Hitler's Heroes: Hanna Reitsch", the female test pilot from the Third Reich who was later invited by Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana to become founder of Ghana's National School Of Gliding.
I have posted the part of the program that refers to her post-war exploits. Only a few minutes is devoted to Ghana, but it does contain some excellent clips of Nkrumah & post-independence Ghana, including some excellent images of a parade at Independence Square.
Hanna Reitsch was the pilot who flew into encircled Berlin to bring the newly promoted head of the Luftwaffe to meet with Hitler in his bunker, just four days before Hitler committed suicide.
After the war, she found herself unwelcome in Europe, and took up an invitation by Nkrumah to found the national gliding school. The pragmatic Nkrumah recognized her brilliance as a pilot, in spite of her links to Nazi Germany, and she lived in Ghana from 1962-1966.
In 1968, Reitsch wrote a book about her experiences in Ghana called "This clip is an excerpt from the program "Hitler's Heroes: Hanna Reitsch", the female test pilot from the Third Reich who was later invited by Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana to become founder of Ghana's National School Of Gliding.

The program tends to draw parallels between Hitler & Nkrumah as dictators, and the commentators are rather negative in their accounts of Reitsch's association with the Nkrumah regime. The program implies that Reitsch had an uncanny knack of gravitating towards dictators, as like Hitler, Nkrumah is regarded as being a dictator in the same vein.
I don't think this is a fair assessment - despite any failings that Nkrumah had, he is a long way from being comparable to Hitler (indeed, their only real comparable points are that the both reverted from democracy to leaders of a one-party state, and their opponents had an uncanny knack of winding up dead for whatever reason - politically they are complete opposites).
I beliefe this extraordinary lady did more for womens standing in a world that was totally controled by men! She was intelligent, brave beyond words and totally loyal to her convictions! She had the respect from the highest German military ranks to the civilians, not just for her loyalty but for her tremendous aviation accomplishments!
as a history student I have read a lot about her and I agree that she was outstanding pilot but in thew end of the day she was still a nazi aswell...and she was a nazi until her death, she also denied holocaust and that cant be overlooked also she wasnt only female pilot in nazi germany.....I mean...Melitta von Stauffenberg... I admire her way more
A great pilot and a great woman R.I.P.👏🥇❤️
Great pilot
you stupid ?where is she a great pilot ?
Started in Bunker ends in Bunker. I miss you
Just to correct an error in this footage - Eric Brown was not a Royal Air Force pilot. He was in the Royal Navy and flew for the Fleet Air Arm.
Exactly. Few realize that
Respect to Hanna Reitsch for not bowing down. RIP. Great proud women.
One of the most fascinating human beings period; Hanna Reitsch, a German hero.
She was not alone. 'Reitsch, von Braun, Galland and so many more. There were thousands of Germans who did not and could not accept the occupied zones as their new country. Most pilots and air craft designers despised and even ousted their former comrades that applied for service in the new Luftwaffe. They started new lives in other countries and that is a good thing.
Any idea where to find the full episode of this??
Eric Brown’s character analysis seems to be the best description.
Algún día la verdad prevalecerá....
The usual heavily biased reporting against Hannah. Flying and people who shared her love of flight were very important to her. Politics aside, She was one of greatest pioneers in flight history imo.
That Amelia is nothing compared to this great woman
What utter nonsense Kwame Nkrumah was one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century. He is warmly celebrated in Ghana , Africa and through the black community. Hanna Reitsch was a true feminist who was on the wrong side of history.
idiot
@@meow121.5 Oh dear another "Keyboard warrior".
Prince Peter imagine defending baby genital mutilators.
“Being on the wrong side of history” was her only alleged crime that is still parroted by the lamestream media today.
She had a daughter with Werner Von Braun.
6:09 what a beautiful woman. Love her skin.
She was a skilled and courageous pilot. The crash of the rocket plane she piloted made such a mess of her face. She was also quite naïve in overlooking the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
Lefty Union Lodge
She tried to save Goebbels children from the bunker.
Fool people Nkrumah was Great man
