13 countries have military bases in Africa and war is something that happens all the time this side but for now its mainly civil wars like how it has been for Ukraine since 2014 before the Invasion of Russia in Ukraine in 2022. Learned this lesson in Bosnia. Was going down Mt. Igman at night in a Toyota truck with no lights and the guy I was with who was a Vietnam vet said "roll down the window". Pretty soon we start hearing 'zing' 'zing' then all hell breaks loose as the Serbian 23mm antiaircraft gun that targeted the road opens up on as and tracers are flying everywhere. Still not sure how I walked away from that one.

The reason an aircraft sounds differnt when its making a gun run is because almost all gun runs (Short of things like JDAM munitions and gliding munitions) is because when the plane comes and angles down; its going super sonic 9/10 times so you get a built-up sonic boom doppler effect.
The subsonic waves build up behind the supersonic waves due to the air rushing past. As the plane dives and pulls up, it loses super sonic and goes subsonic so you get to hear the sonic boom, then the doppler effect then the sounds from all the munitions. Due to the changing velocities and the fact you have at least 4 sources of sound all at differing speeds and angles; the sound waves stack up, mute eachother and augment others.
Its actually kinda crazy the forces at play on aircraft.
In summary; the sound of the engine, wind rushing past the plane and how sonic booms and doppler effects work all combine to make aircraft sound crazy, especially from below.
Also, Germans in WW2 literally put horns on their planes. Thats where you get the iconic whine of a Stuka dive bomber. ( ua-cam.com/video/UQzv-8pJSqY/v-deo.html )
THe sound isnt intentional (Usually Cough, Germans.), but when it happens, nobody designs it out. Fear is a big factor on the battlefield. Just ask the Russians about the Stukas. It was a truely feared aircraft of its time.

Prior Army EOD. We learned the same things and got fairly good at predicting what rounds we’d have to respond to from their noise. Mortars made that kinda hiss sound and stuff like 107mm rockets sounded like a Star Wars laser beam screaming overhead. Could also tell if a round went “high order” (exploded) or just impacted or “low ordered” (explosives just burned rather than detonated. Arty has that really distinctive Thaaa-WHOMP sound, almost like a very quick double impact of the round hitting and split second later exploding. If ya know ya know.

It's easily summarized from a physical standpoint:
Things that move through the air push air aside, creating friction, in turn creating sound.
Depending on the projectile shape and speed, this will be audible as a "whoosh", "whine" or both.
Size, and somewhat shape, will determine the pitch of the sound, which is why small projectiles have a very high pitch while artillery shells have a way lower pitch.
Pitch is also determined by the Doppler effect: Something moving straight towards you will have the highest pitch, and as it passes you there is a sudden drop in pitch, which is why you know once this sudden drop happened, the projectile passed you.
If anything moves faster than the speed of sound (~340m/s), it will create a sonic boom. Those are _very loud_ and also change pitch and volume with projectile size and speed. Higher speed = higher pitch and volume, larger projectile = lower pitch.
Smallarms "bulletCracks" will roughly sound like and have the volume of a .22lr, just a bit higher in pitch, while bulletCracks from something like a 25mm cannon basically sounds like a 5.56 gunshot. And because the projectiles travel faster than sound, you'll hear the crack before the sound of the actual gun/cannon discharge reaches you.

this was such an informative video even from the point of view of someone who has never been in combat. From someone that played a lot of squad being able to hear what incoming fire actually sounds like and it was interesting to learn what actual soldiers actually hear being actually under fire, squad is just a game at the end of the day but being able to compare how the incoming sounds in game to real life is interesting and important to me just for understanding what actual soldiers go through, especially from the grad because it whistles in a similar fashion in squad before it impacts, hearing how an actual grad sounds when those rockets are coming at you, it's certainly an eye opener for someone who will never experience it, the feeling you must get from hearing it then feeling the impacts it must be something else entirely... I couldn't fathom it.

6:40 Never thought the sound of drones would be the scariest thing in someone’s life 😅 always thought they might be used eventually in war… but the speed at which they have come onto and the range of abilities they have is truly truly scary😅
I’ve never watched one of those videos of drone specialists flying through factories in the same way, since they’ve been used in war 😅

ISIS was using cheap $650 drones to drop grenades on Iraqi forces back in 2017, and there was the eighteen year old kid slightly before that who posted a video of a drone with a remotely activated handgun attached to it. Ukrainian forces have also used drones effectively as carriers to drop modified antitank grenades on Russian tanks.
The conflict in Ukraine has certainly highlighted the tactical potential (or worry) of drones in a large-scale conflict, though, compared to the more irregular style of conflicts in the Middle East.
