Church's horrific back story does make him a unique and very interesting character in the aliens universe. Would be great to see more of that one crazy doc.
I was literally saying that to myself just now. I did the same. It's still the graphic novel in the sequence I recommend to anyone with a distinct warning that it gets into your head. It really does. Not through violence but the just... disquieting story and ideas.
Church was an opportunity to take the tired mad scientist trope and really make it more ambiguous, and just when you think they're going to do it - they stick with tired mad scientist trope. One of the more eloquent mad scientists to be sure, but still just a mad scientist.
His backstory is cool as fuck, mostly because who knew that Xenonorphs could get as intelligent as they did in his backstory? Creating medicine, farming? Cattles? Like Jesus. But then his motivation went; "hur hur hur! Lemme be a Xenomorph!" Extremely disappointing. I mean, imagine if he's trying to make Xenonorphs INTELLIGENT.
@@Slechy_Lesh The Dark Horse Omnibuses are all great comics and you can get them from a variety of sellers, but there's a whole bunch of books as well, though you might find those difficult to locate at a decent price, if you can find them at all nowadays (I think some might be on Internet archives or on Kindle or something, but they would be the more recent ones). The comics are actually visual representations of most of the early books, Rogue Labyrinth, Nightmare Asylum, etc, all have novel versions that are WAY more graphic in the language they use to describe things (obviously that depends on your imagination unlike a comic where you are visually shown what is happening). I can't remember if Earth Hive or Female War also have comics, but that trilogy is also really good, basically a somewhat-canon sequel to Alien's that skips over Alien 3 (Ripley survives, goes back to Earth etc) as it came about before the release and was apparently based somewhat on where they wanted to go with the films, but obviously this radically changed with new directors. The AvP Omnibuses are also really good, and I have a soft spot for the absolutely absurd Alien Vs Predator Vs Terminator lol and Judge Dredd vs Alien.
From what ive read on the rumour mill, Dr Church was originally meant to be the Father in Colonial Marines. But they constant changes of the writing and art teams caused it to be altered
First came by Church in the Novelisation of Aliens Labyrinth. So a fantastic character. It's like if David Cronenberg directed an Alien movie and Church is very much a Cronenberg character also would you lads ever cover the Aliens Comicbook adventure game plot. I wouldn't ask ye to play it cause it's boardline unplayable. Awesome video.
I had this series as a kid back in the 90's and Labyrinth always haunted me. I loved the Dark Horse comics, as I was obsessed with the franchise, and they introduced me to Kilian Plunkett who is now one of my artistic heroes. I grew up in a time of Liquid Television and Ren & Stimpy, and was a huge fan of Aeon Flux, so Labyrinth was pretty much up my alley (so to speak). I'm glad it's still held its legacy as being not only a great Alien spinoff, but also just amazing science fiction.
This would been much more interesting as an movie than the best of-hits rehash that was Romulus...but I don't think Hollywood wants to touch stuff like what happens in Labyrinth
I could see this guy being played by the dude that voiced Chucky- Brad Dourif; who was the scientist in Alien Resurrection that gets pulled down the acid hole.
I never heard of Church until today, only now getting deep into Alien lore. What he had to do to survive almost made throw up. It's so disgust and desperate I was wretch in the bathroom. Really hope that the (eventual) sequel to Romulus goes deeper into Alien lore instead of giving us a pretty safe (but genuinely fun) fan film.
I may not know much about alien outside of the movies. But I'm honestly so confused by so many parts here. Like why did the aliens do this? Aren't they just programmed to kill? Even if they don't have a queen. Seeing them kidnapping people seems so weird to me. Also, what did church mean by "I'm the hive?" There's nothing about what happened to him that would fit the discrimination of an alien hive... Don't get me wrong, the story is messed up and interesting. But there's so many things that I just don't get...
I think "I am the hive" is his way of saying he inherited the hive's will to survive and evolve by whatever means necessary. It's metaphorical, not literal.
I like the story behind Church. But instead of making him more of a cartoon villain, the writer could've made him more likeable or something like it. To further blur the lines. They really could lean on him making really interesting discoveries. But that's the problem currently. Hollywood is suffering from poor writers and scripts.
Constructive criticism for all content creators on UA-cam I don’t hear somebody say like comments subscribe is the day when I like comment and subscribe other than this comment and I’m not the only one who thanks this way who stinks this way
The problem is, theres science to back up why every youtuber has to say it. More people will actually subscribe if the person says it, its like a psychological trigger. I hate it just as much as the next none npc who hears it, but it is based in some fact. Studies have been done on it. Also, the algorithm is a factor as well, if a youtuber doesnt say it, its just another percentage point taken away from being in the chain.
Some say the mad scientist trope is a bit of a disappointment for Church, but how could you keep your sanity after something like that? It was pure desperation.
Something I really like about this is that it shows that the Xenomorphs are flawed like everyone in the movies talks about them as being this perfect organism that can always survive but this comic shows that they aren't they can't even save their own hive
Church's horrific back story does make him a unique and very interesting character in the aliens universe. Would be great to see more of that one crazy doc.
I read the book 25yrs ago. Let’s just say - this story sticks with you.
I was literally saying that to myself just now. I did the same. It's still the graphic novel in the sequence I recommend to anyone with a distinct warning that it gets into your head. It really does. Not through violence but the just... disquieting story and ideas.
It absolutely does. My other favorite was Music of the Spears
Yup. It’s still on my shelf 30 years later and I haven’t picked it up since I was 10 or 11 but still remember it vividly.
I was an Alien enthusiast & comic collector as a preteen. This story was by far always one of the best. As well as most unique IMHO, a real stand out.

Hands down the best Aliens story. SD Perry's novel adaptation is a great addition to the comic too!
This comic came out back during a period of time where all Aliens comics and books were suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper fucked up
Any recommendations?

@@Slechy_Leshthe first aliens omnibus is a hell of a read but really entertained me in my youth lol (it will not make you lol)
Worst. Family vacation. Ever.
😂😂😂😂😂
You've obviously never been to the Isle of Wight.
You cats are hilarious.
From what ive read on the rumour mill, Dr Church was originally meant to be the Father in Colonial Marines. But they constant changes of the writing and art teams caused it to be altered
Disappointed that we get crap like Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem when there is 30 years worth of fantastic expanded universe lore that remains untapped.
Star Wars fans: "First time?"
A fascinating story! Would love to see this expanded upon.
"I hope you know Crespi, none of this is personal"

this is possibly the most nihilistic thing i've ever seen. Gonna go hug my cat now.
quality content as always.
He makes the aliens seem saintly.
Always thought this would have made for a pretty neat Alien movie.
This story and characters are optimum for movie making. A hard R Alien.
Would be a phenomenal villain
N word alien? Sick
Great narration on this one.

I remember collecting these in the 90s. Dark Horse has gone down in quality since the 90s. But what a great period they went through
This should have been more closely followed for Alien Resurrection. Its seriously one of the best Alien stories ever written.
This would been much more interesting as an movie than the best of-hits rehash that was Romulus...but I don't think Hollywood wants to touch stuff like what happens in Labyrinth
@@ocean_monster1 Yeah. The shenanigans with the Predalien were already pushing it.
One of the best Aliens comics!
Honestly, I like Church's motivation. I too would want to shed my human shell if exposed directly to its fallibility.
This 2 story set I had once outstanding story and artwork.
One of the most interesting segments I've ever seen period
I read this comic way too young
Same, I was probably 11 or 12. The scene with his mom. Ugh, still grosses me out.
Same here on all accounts brothers. 🤘
great video
I miss the 90s Alien and Predator comic books
This made me want a ReAnimator movie set in the Alien Universe
Church may be one of the most important "expanded universe" characters in the Alien Franchise. He undoubtedly inspired the Prometheus movies
This would have been an amazing movie
This should of been a film
This would be a good movie. Rated r of course cause when I read the comic I was like damn he is insane 😮😳😳😬
I could see this guy being played by the dude that voiced Chucky- Brad Dourif; who was the scientist in Alien Resurrection that gets pulled down the acid hole.

This was a great video with fantastic narration. But...what's a colonel doctor?
A made up rank for the comic! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great video Alien vs Predator Galaxy! I do hope that Dr. Church returns!
I appreciate scientific revolutionaries like the doctor. His research in xenomorph sociobiology is interesting
um ethics?
2:50 precious bunnies
this video makes me wonder if xenomorphs smell
i would love to see this as a movie. Which director would make it believable?
Panos cosmatos
I remember reading this in my school library about 11 years ago lol
Why isnt there a movie about this?
Wow you can def see that this comic has influenced later films in the series…
The next Alien movie should be about Labyrinth.
Awesome video :)
Yes.
Please PLEASE talk about Music of the Spears if you haven’t already
This channel gives me the heebie-jeebies, but in a good way.

Always suspected that the insectoid aliens would take over the universe. All hail the queen.

I have this graphic novel! A fantastic horror story! Worthy of the ALIEN franchise!
Some say the mad scientist trope is a bit of a disappointment for Church, but how could you keep your sanity after something like that? It was pure desperation.
Why can't they just make a movie out of this story? Not changing anything, 100% as it was written.
Really makes me want to embrace 40K and all the idiots associated with it. I'm going to need, like, ten good xenos stories to recover.
I hope they don't ever put this on film😂
No worries, Hollywood could never tell a story like comics can
idk why we need this when alientheory exists
ugh. Watched to the end, and I'll admit when Im wrong. The cameo and the the novelisations info is pretty new to me, so thanks for that.
I’m sorry, Ridley gets married? Oh hell naw
Something I really like about this is that it shows that the Xenomorphs are flawed like everyone in the movies talks about them as being this perfect organism that can always survive but this comic shows that they aren't they can't even save their own hive
To be fair, the hive seemed to be in a exceptional situation, being afflicted by disease and such
Alien 3 should have been about paul Church
