Also I did 3 videos yesterday that will be published eventually, and all are from the 1950s... And I refer to the nuclear age/space age. Very interesting!
We use the second edition of the Good News Bible/TEV at my parish. I was skeptical of the translation for a long time, but it has grown on me. It does a really good job of translating the Bible into normal English.
@@FrKevinDaugherty Thanks for commenting, Father. When you flatten out the language to increase accessibility, there's a significant dropoff in the beauty of it. But the TEV is efficient at communicating ideas.
There is no doubt that outreach is harder than ever. I personally give away about 100 bibles each year, and there are some young people who ask me for one, but not as many as older. I've been handing out NLT and CSB lately. Sad that our local library tosses any Bibles that come in, they use to share them with me so I could give them, but that now has stopped. Thanks for the video. Take care
That Good News paperback New Testament is awesome!! I remember when the Gideons were handing out Bibles outside of my seminary one time. I said, "No, I'm fine with my Greek New Testament...". I thought, "Seriously, people?!"
@@joest.eggbenedictus1896 Those poor Gideons probably went to the seminary thinking it would be easier than dealing with the constant rejection they get at the state universities. And then you had to go and ruin it!
I'm not sure how effective outreach Bibles are overall. Certainly there are stories of people having their lives changed by a chance encounter with a Gideon Bible, but today the Bible is easily accessible to anyone with an internet connection. I'm not sure access is the issue. I don't know, but I know for me I was finally firmly brought to the faith because I met a person who really loved Jesus and lived their life accordingly. The Bible reading came much later. I wonder if outreach Gospels are a better choice, like a volume containing only Mark or John in the NLT or other easy to read translation. That seems to me much less intimidating to someone who knows nothing about the Bible or NT. And they also have larger print which is nice. With all that said, nice little collection there!
I had expected some announcement about the 2019 BCP because of your FB photo, but instead there is this interesting video. The cheap gimme Bibles always seem a bit insulting, imho, to both the Scriptures and the recipients. For several years I had a steady supply of Jerusalem Bible Readers Edition, and kept one in my backpack to give away. Now, I still give away the JB, but it's easier to find the big OG, which is probably more daunting. One does what one can.
The Gideons came to our school when I was in elementary school. I thought they were the Jehovah’s Witnesses by a different name. I was scared to take their Bible. Turns out that was far from the case. Ironically, I am now friends with a JW and I have a New World Translation (not that I would call it a translation) on my shelf for occasional reference purposes. I like to sometimes see what his Bible says when I am getting into theological discussions. The Gideons used to put Bibles in hotels, but I haven’t seen one lately when I’ve been staying at a hotel. I think they pulled them out with COVID.

@@RobertP_1960 That's a shame that your library has changed that policy. You're doing good work, my friend.

@@ThriftStoreBibles Thank you, as always, my friend.
You can become a "Friend of the Gideons" and can then buy the little new testaments from them. They cost ~$2.00 each if I remember correctly.
Thank you, Doctor.
