- राज कपूर के बारे में एक कहानी बार बार सुनाई जाती है कि पचास के दशक में जब नेहरू रूस गए तो सरकारी भोज के दौरान जब नेहरू के बाद वहाँ के प्रधानमंत्री निकोलाई बुल्गानिन के बोलने की बारी आई तो उन्होंने अपने मंत्रियों के साथ 'आवारा हूँ' गा कर उन्हें चकित कर दिया. 1996 में जब राज कपूर के बेटे रणधीर कपूर और बेटी ऋतु नंदा चीन गए तो उनकी आँखों में उस समय आंसू आ गए जब चीनी लोगों ने उन्हें देखते ही 'आवारा हूँ' गाने लगते. उन्हें ये नहीं पता था कि ये दोनों राज कपूर के बेटे बेटी थे, लेकिन वो ये गीत गा कर राज कपूर और भारत का सम्मान कर रहे थे. कहा तो ये भी जाता है कि 'आवारा' माओ त्से तुंग की पसंदीदा फ़िल्म थी. ऋतु नंदा बताती हैं कि 1993 में जब रूस के राष्ट्रपति बोरिस येल्तसिन भारत आए और उन्हें बताया गया कि वो उनसे मिलना चाहती हैं, तो न सिर्फ़ वो इसके लिए तैयार हो गए, बल्कि उन्होंने उनकी किताब पर एक नोट लिखा, "मैं आपके पिता से प्रेम करता था. वो हमारी यादों में आज भी मौजूद हैं." आख़िर राज कपूर की लोकप्रियता का राज़ क्या था? एक बार जब राज कपूर लंदन में बीबीसी के बुश हाउश दफ़्तर में आए थे तो उन्होंने इसका जवाब देते हुए कहा था, "ये सन् 1954 का किस्सा है जब मैं अपनी दो तस्वीरें ले कर रूस गया था. उनमें से एक थी 'आवारा'. इस तस्वीर से हमारा रूस के लोगों से पहला परिचय हुआ. वो थोड़ा बहुत हिंदुस्तान को जानते थे, लेकिन इन तस्वीरों के ज़रिए वो हिंदुस्तान के और क़रीब आए." "आवारा के क़िरदार की शक्लसूरत कुछ राज कपूर जैसी थी, लेकिन दिल उसका अवाम का था, हिंदुस्तान के उस नौजवान का था जो आज तक उसी प्यार से धड़कता है. दरअसल उन्होंने राज कपूर को नहीं अपनाया, उन्होंने हिंदुस्तान के उस नौजवान को अपनाया जिसका दिल बार बार यही कहता था." रेहान फ़ज़ल की विवेचना.

In 2016 I had gone for hajj... Once I was infront of kabbah shareef waiting for nimaz zuhar ,that one elderly Turk Shook his hands with as a, gesture love and venerations. He introduced himself as ex professor of Ankara medical college...He then asked me my name and, residence... I told I am kashmiri.... He got too exited and said u mean india I nodded in affirmation... He instantly stood up and began dancing and singing awara hoo... I was a bit perplexed but he smilingly continued awara hoo dance in front of kabbah .
I remember the death date of Raj kapoor when the song was playing on radio... ek din bik jayega... I was in 8th standard and just moving to my school with having tears in my eyes... Later I became fan of his movies tried to watch all his movies... the real showman.

राज कपूर की फिल्मों के अधिकतर गाने गीतकार शैलेन्द्र ही लिखते थे उन्हीं गानों से राज कपूर ने प्रसिद्धि पाई थी लेकिन जब शैलेन्द्र ने फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु के उपन्यास मारे गये गुलफाम पर तीसरी कसम फिल्म बनाई तब राज कपूर को बतौर नायक अनुबंध किया और राज कपूर ने उस फिल्म का मेहनताना बतौर 1.00 रुपये लिया, लेकिन फिल्म की सूटिंग में समय नहीं दिया जिसके कारण शैलेन्द्र की फिल्म का बजट 5 लाख से बढकर 18 लाख तक पहुंच गया और शैलेन्द्र कर्जे में ढूब चुके थे, राज कपूर फिल्म की कहानी के अंत बदलना चाहते थे कहते थे जनता पसंद नहीं करेगी लेकिन शैलेन्द्र नहीं माने, फिल्म क़ बड़ी मुश्किल से रिलीज किया गया इसी दौरान शैलेन्द्र जो कि सदमा बरदाश्त के बाहर था झेल नहीं पाये और एक शानदार मानवीय संवेदनाओं से ओतप्रोत जमीन पर रहने वाले प्रत्येक भारतीय के दिलों की आवाज शांत हो गई और वह मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुये, उसके बाद तीसरी कसम फिल्म ने भारत के इतिहास में मील का पत्थर साबित हूई जिसे लोग सर्वकालिक पसंद करते हैं गीत और संगीत भी भारतीय लोकसंगीत और लोकसंस्कृति की धरोहर बन गई है
Shailendraji is my inspiration and the lyricist who made me realise how our poetry is far better than any other language. All my life I was longing to know more and more about this greatest poet and when I saw the the full documentary ( can't remember the name right now ) my happiness knew no boundaries.
