  • This video shows me step by step fixing a friend's pair of Magnanni casual dress sneakers that looked bad after someone tried to cover some staining and fading on the toes.
I honestly almost didn't record this video, as I didn't know if the content was "video worthy". I know it's not an earth-shattering transformation, but I thought at the end that it's still fun to watch, and may help someone. As I state in the video, just be careful with Reno-mat, as I've heard from others that it sometimes will remove the color from shoes.
    0:35 - Starting condition
0:56 - Warnging of using dye with a duaber vs airbrush
2:38 - Step 1: Stripping the old wax off with Saphir Renomat
5:11 Step 2: Prepping the surface for dye
5:27 - Taping off the soles with masking tape
6:01 - Airbrushing on alcohol reduced dye
6:41 - Step 3 - condittioning the leather with Pure Polish Cleaner Conditioner
10:49 Step 4 - Brush the set up conditioner with a horse hair brush
    11:26 - Step 5 - Apply Saphir Medaille D'Or #37 medium brown cream polish
12:48 - Step 6: Brushing the polish with a horse hair brush
13:51 =- Step 7: Ceaning the edges of the sole with Shoe MGK Cleaner & Conditioner & some brake cleaner
    15:43 - The finished result
    17:51 - Outro with music

    3. I got the Shoe MGK cleaner at a mall kiosk years ago, but any cleaner such as a baking soda and water paste, Fantastik tub cleaner, Simple Green cleaner etc will work.

Awesome work! For anyone curious, the initial darkening isn't going to be permanent (unless the leather is *highly* undernourished), and is more from the exposure to the solvent rather than the conditioning oil. So it will evaporate after 15-20 min. Fortunately, using a pigmented cream nullifies any concerns in that regard. Thanks for the shout-out Bob!

Great video! Your previous how-to guide with the KF&S oxfords persuaded me to try it on a pair of old Crockett and Jones shoes. I'm glad to announce they turned out very well! Keep up the great work!

Crockett & Jones? Wow! Bold! I sometimes get nervous when I make a change on a pair of thrifted shoes I aquire cheap, and someone tries something similar on a pair of expensive shoes, so I'm glad it came out well!

@@CobblerBob Haha yeah, they are a pair of Handgrade too, but I bought them on ebay for less than 100 dollars, so not too much skin in the game thankfully. The very light colour was a bit unusual, so perfect for a dye job. Although it wasnt perfect, I actually really like the slightly mottled, almost museum calf, look that it gives the shoes. I used the saphir dye, which I really liked. Thanks for the reply!

Another great video, Robert, thank you! Always fun and informative. You have a great variety of shoes you work on too... I wasn't expecting to see these on your channel!
I have two pairs of Magnanni high-top sneakers, one in brown, one pair in red. They've held up very well, are extremely comfortable and super stylish. My favorite thing about them (and most of their shoes) is the hand-painted patina. I also have a couple potatoes of their dress shoes, which I would say are only so-so; however, they really excel at making sneakers.

Great job Bob. It's nice to see some sneakers restored. I have been dabbling in the premium sneaker scene recently since I don't get a chance to wear my dress shoes as much.

Thanks! That pair aren’t mine. I hated them when they came out. About a year ago an wholesaler that came to talk to us in his 30’s was wearing them with a suit. At that moment I knew they were “a thing“. Now, I’m contemplating getting a pair myself.

Hey Rob I'm curious what your thoughts are on casual shoes.
Personally I acvtually quite like the look of some of the more minamalist casual shoes like the ones you have in this video.. but because they can't be resoled so easily and unintrusively, I don't like the idea of spending alot of money on them fearing they won't last long.
Do you think there's the possibility to make a casual shoe that is goodyear welted? perhaps an innovative way of doing it so it doesn't have a big blocky sole potentially ruining the aesthetic?

Hmmm… good question…🧐 but that kinda sounds like the difference between an Allen Edmonds Strand with a leather sole, and a Strandmok with a Dainite sole?

I was wondering whether the solvent in Reno Mat would be safe for glued-on soles, like sneakers. I’m considering using them on some Blundstone rustic brown shoes that have shoe cream and silicone spray on them i want to remove

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Рік тому

I obviously cannot make any blanket statements, but I'd be REALLY surprised if RenoMat would have any negative effects on a sneaker rubber sole. Generally the soles are molded in color so that the color stays on even as they wear. Therefore I don''t forsee the Renomat taking off any coatings and changing the color, etc. I would try a small inconspicous area first if possible.

This is awesome! Which polish do you recommend (if other than magnanni's own?) I have a cognac pair and navy pair that are both in need of this treatment but would like to avoid the cost/shipping time of the "magnanni official polish" if possible. thanks for this awesome content!

I like Pure Polish Products (www.purepolishpeoducts.com) and Saphir. Pure Polish is made in the US, but they don’t have as many color choices as Saphir.

Bob, I want to get an airbrush, it applies the color so much more evenly than slapping it on with the wool dauber. Do you dilute the dye before you spray? I noticed the notation says dye & alcohol..? I know Feibings (non-pro) dye is alcohol base, do you further dilute it? With 91% Isopropyl? Can you make a video or explain in detail the mixture methodology? Please. Thanks!!

Al, I'm not saying it's IDEAL, but I have been using PPG acrylic laquer paint thinner. I first used it bc I have like 2 gallons of it left over in my garage from eons ago when I used to paint cars, and I'm a cheap SOB. The first few times I airbrushed anything, they were shoes I didn't care if I ruined, so I just grabbed the thinner off of the shelf. I just went out and looked, and the contents say it's made of (in this order) Acetone, tolulene, petroleum distilates, and isopropyl alcohol. I usually use about 3/1 mixture, 3 parts thinner to 1 part dye, and it works well. I don't think the mix ratio is critical at all. I think you could go down to 2/1 or up to 4/1. I haven't messed around with the ratio that much bc what I was doing was working. I wouldn't be surprised, as you said, since the dye is alcohol based if you could just spray it straght. If I didn't have the thinner already, I would go to Walmart and buy a quart can of denatured alcohol for $7.

I used Reno' Mat on my pair of Magnanni sneakers and it did remove the coloring. I accidentally stained new pair few months ago and Reno' Mat made it worse. As the matter of fact even a cream such as Saphir Creme Universelle and Angelous Cream removed color from brand new pair of Magnanni Curvo Cognac. Removed color is visible on the cloth as well as the edges of white sole.

Wow, that sucks, but thanks for sharing your experience. The best place to test stuff is on the side of the tongue. That way if it does remove color it won’t show. I wonder if that’s a problem with the way Magnanni finished their leather?

@@CobblerBob Thanks for the tip. Agree, finish might be an issue because I did not experience loss of finish when using these creams on any other shoes, boots, or jackets. One thing I forgot to mention is that while Reno' Mat did remove finish it did not remove 3 small stains I actually wanted to remove. Adding multiple layers of Saphir Cognac Cream made the whole mess much better, but "bald" spot is still visible.

It’s just a solvent I happen to have a lot of laying around. It comes on aeresol cans and is made for cleaning off car brakes and car parts. It dries with no residue. It does a great job stripping stuff off of surfaces. I figured the rubber soles were molded in color, so I could use harsh chemicals on them without fear of damaging them.
