This movie makes me think of my wife, Laura. She passed almost 3 years ago. We loved movies and watched a lot of them. This was one of them. Sometime after we watched it, she bought me the gold audiophile CD of Blonde on Blonde. I really miss her, but this makes me happy.
I think so too. He steals every scene he's in and really benefits from having the other characters as straight men to his obnoxiousness. He's not in the film all the time, but that really makes you look forward to the scenes he *is* in.
Not only did I love, Love, LOVE Jack Black's performance of this classic iconic number, but also John Cusack's build up of fear all the way up to showtime UNTIL he hears Jack sing, then, total 180!! His reaction is just pure pleasure and surprise. What a great movie!
This blew my mind when I saw it for the first time. I had no clue who jack black was, but after this scene, I was an instant fanboy. Tenacious D’s first album was a masterpiece.
that's kind of strange. wasn't this the end of the movie? to expect a disaster at that point would mean that you haven't seen any movies up till that point
This scene captures the spirit of what music is all about... its power to transport, to heal, to empower, to connect people. Rob doesn't have faith in himself or his friend Barry. Everything about Barry's behavior might suggest Rob's faithlessness would be wise. Barry blows the doors off and the selection of a truly great Marvin Gaye classic connects all the musical & emotional dots. Brilliant.
@@Justcarlosdiaz It’s normal for someone who has no sense of rhythm or timing when dancing. He just sticks out like a sore thumb for an actor who has historically been known to be a big party guy.
This amazed me when it came out.. I was interested in it because I'm a John Cusack fan, but at the time pretty much enjoyed all Jack Black's odd parts in movies. I remember watching the movie, having no idea up to then, that Jack Black sang.. I remember after the movie all my friends and I talking.. wow.. he can sing.. wow... and have enjoyed his stuff since. thanks for posting this clip. excellent
I first became aware of Jack Black from a little movie called Airborne. So bad it was funny. Then, a few years later, I randomly stumbled upon this tiny little show that suddenly came on before Mr. Show. One of the funniest things I’d ever seen up to that point. Tenacious D. The entire setup for this - how John Cusack’s character was petrified to have him perform was a joke in and of itself to me. I knew Jack was bound to tear shit up. And lo and behold… this. The brother can definitely sing.
Barry is the ultimate troll. Names his band Sonic Death Monkey and tells Rob his band goes "over the edge". Gets up on stage and plays a totally safe rendition of a classic soul song.
the best movie of all times. not cos of camera or production, but the whole vibe. and music. and intelligence. straight in the feels, even after 20+ years. ❤
Jack has some tasty chops there...I grew up with Marvin, Jack did an awesome job of capturing his soul...First time seeing this; Thanks for the upload...
Rob was under the impression that Barry was going to play/sing some type of German heavy metal, guitar bashing, hardcore, scary music because of the band's name Sonic Death Monkey. But Barry flipped the script on him and cover a masterpiece of a love song while doing a darn good job at it as Barry Jive and the Uptown 5! It was a pleasant surprise to both Rob and Laura. What a great movie!

i was gonna comment how this scene is pretty much the exact moment when you're at a Best Buy demo of Guitar Hero II, and a dude strolls up to 2player, and sets it to Expert mode. you expect they're gonna crash and burn before the first verse kicks in, but the dude is just nailing it..... but now i gotta comment that High Fidelity came out in 2000. Jack had been doing on screen roles in major Hollywood productions since the early 90's (including The Never Ending Story III, Waterworld, and Mars Attacks) but he wasn't a direct supporting cast member the way he is in High Fidelity. similar to Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers who's been in films such as Back To The Future II, My Own Private Idaho, and The Big Lebowski. High Fidelity was the moment where Jack Black went from ensemble cast to star....but far from the first.
It should be, but it isn't, because it's absolutely not true, lol. The sound space is totally wrong; he sang the track in a studio, I'd bet any money on it.
@@keithklassen5320 - I would actually take that bet. I'm pretty sure the audio you hear in this scene was Jack doing a live performance.
