The AI is/was broken and 95% of the online community sadly copied what they do, leading to a boring, repetitive and spammy experience most of the time. Take it from the guy who finished at #1 in the world on 360 on it before the servers closed nearly 6 years ago, you really could have a decent game of tennis with the right 2 people playing, sadly they were very few and far between, the skill required was just too much as you had to master the right stick controls then mix it with the standard buttons because flat shots only worked on RS when you were right behind the ball and could power it up, shots with the buttons weren't as effective apart from a powered up slice down the line with them, which was another broken aspect as it often caused you to lunge at the ball uncontrollably, for a casual player or even most decent ones it was easier just to stick with the buttons when net rushing + that aforementioned slice glitch was often enough (though it doesn't work vs AI). The guy I knocked off the #1 spot embodied everything wrong with the game and he was that much of a bellend that it was pretty much the only reason I decided to push for it in the first place, he even called himself worstgst2player he was that convinced nobody would ever do it. He played somewhere around 8000 games in the space of about 2-3 years and I think only 3-4 people legitimately beat him in all that time, I was one of them after learning the game properly, prick was just salty afterwards, but literally all he did was net spam or if you serve and volleyed he would throw a lob up and try to rush your smash pretty much every single time. Sorry for this ramble but I actually did only come to this video for GST2 and I really didn't expect to see the top comment be about it. But yeah it was missed potential, poor animations in particular + the net being so OP vs 99% of players gave it little chance, though honestly I played it's main rival Top Spin 4 online for a bit years ago and that was just as ridiculous only at the opposite end of the court, people blasting 3000mph flat winners on the stretch off perfectly timed slice shots on grass from right in front of the stands.
The first games make sense that are so serve and volleys based, the sport was like that in The 90s compared to the 2000s when baseline Game started to be more prominent overall

I mean, Full Ace and Tiebreak still need some updates, Top Spin 2k25 is mediocre, no realistic faces nor grunts. Tennis Elbow is very good but not for everyone. I mean, VT1, 2 and 3 were so much fun. Same for the classics top spin. Even recent Mario tennis games are terrible lol.
