I did not know the 730 had a pony motor option. Learn something every day. I spent many many hours on a 720 D in the Yellowstone Valley. Just as nice as yours. I started it backwards twice. We had a JD two bottom "spinner" plow, three-point mounted. In heavy river bottom gumbo and old alfalfa, the 720 just pounded but never stalled. It outdid the landowners IH 560 with the same plow, hands down. Only by constantly engaging and releasing the TA on the IH could it keep up. I love your video. Now if It only had "smellivision". Oh, the memories. Thanks for sharing the video.
Hearing those old John Deeres brings back so many fond memories of my youth, having spent many an hour on two cylinder tractors and loving every minute of it!
Never had the pleasure of running one, but I certainly miss the sound. In 1963 when a friend showed me his new 4020 ( I believe it was), I couldn't help wondering why JD would give up the distinctiveness.
@@marvindoolin1340 I was disappointed beyond description when John Deere did away with the 2 cylinder John Deeres, in fact I swore I would never forgive them for it. Over they years I've read various articles about why John Deere made the change from the 2 cylinders and it wasn't something they did lightly, without giving it a lot of thought. I was John Deere's two cylinders that distinguished them from all other tractors, it was what symbolized John Deere to most people. Making a change could be costly to John Deere, but not making the change could be even worse. There were several items that had to be considered and I don't remember all of them but one of them was the fact that the 2 cylinder engines had reach their ultimate size in cubic inches and horsepower. I understood that a ultimately had to agree with them and then I had to agree with them on all the other factors that went into the decision to move away from the Two cylinder tractors. Times change, farms change and farmers needs change and you can either change to meet those changes or go out of business. As much as I miss the sound and appearance of the old 2 cylinder John Deeres, I think they made the right move and their replacement tractors to take the place of the two cylinders were truly modern, up to date tractors with features that farmers wanted and with John Deere quality. If you get a chance read about why John Deere changed from the 2 cylinders to three and more cylinders, it's very interesting. Just as interesting is reading about why John Deere made the 2 cylinder tractors to begin with.
Grew up with Farmall Super MTA's Case and John deere tractors in the 50's and 60's. No cabs, no stereo, no A/C. Just out in the open inhaling dust, exhaust fumes., and pollen. Later in my life in the eighty's, I saw those big old 86 series John Deere tractors with their airconditioned cabs and I was thrilled at first but then realized that I was missing something. Wasn't quite what I thought it would be. Took y;our attention all the time to keep a straight line. Couldn't smell the fresh turned dirt. Glad I grew up when I did. At the end of the day we left the fields and still had to feed the cattle and hogs. Nowadays these grain farmers are in the same boat as me when it comes to groceries. They have to go to the store and seldom raise any stock or even garden truck.
Love the way these old tractors sound. I’ve got a 46’ A I’m restoring now and I can’t get enough of how it sounds. Love to find an old three bottom breaker like that to pair with it.
Dad bought a 70 with pony start 1962 very powerful tractor, later needed rebuild as 720 kit was added..pulled 11 ft ih 37 disc 4 16 plow without much smoke. That was our big tractor until 1973 added 4020
Awesome video ! Great to see the Old Green Machines Pulling hard. I always loved the sound of our 70 Diesel we had on our family's farm. We had a few John Deere tractors a 40 , A , AR, B , Diesel 70, 3020,4020, 7020 Gone are those days, but such Sweet memories ! Thanks so much for sharing the video for others to enjoy !
Now that is pure music coming from those tractors The first thing I learned to drive where’s my grandpa‘s model A to this day I hear that tractor in my head and it’s a sound I do not want to get out of my head!
I saw a lot of plowed fields during my youth in NW Ohio. The soil in this video was perfect go plowing. The soil I remember was a lot heavier while being plowed and probably required more tractor power in addition to additional disking. Soil conditions and timing are almost as important as having the right equipment. Love JD's!!
I will never forget those moments when I was with my father standing behind the seat holding me tight so as not to fall when we crossed a small river with the John Deere 730 Diesel, I will never forget that fantastic and peculiar sound.
Ah the memories. Drag ploughs and "poppers"! Got my "bug" for fieldwork in '67 at 12 yrs old and learned from an "old master" ..... straight and tight. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
beautiful pieces, my dad bought a 730 pony start brand new back in the day, had the plow, two point mower, mounted cultivator, corn picker, sheller. and a soft side cab. put m+w pistons and bigger sparklers in it and could pull the 4th bottom like a dream. spent a lot of hours in that seat. we had an old minny mo too. a man almost lost a leg on that thing, got his coveralls wrapped up in the pto shaft. that was before the days of free spinning pto guards.
My dad bought a new JD 730 diesel spring of 1960 electric start it was his main tractor till 1970 when it was regulated to planting and cultivating, sadly it broke the crankshaft in 1971 for some unexplained reason he sold to a salvage yard and replaced it with a 4520 which was not a very good tractor that size tractor didn't become good until they changed the engine and created the 4620. The 45's had a 404 engine with turbo charger the 46's had tubo charger and intercooler that made a huge difference in horsepower and longevity
I learned to plow on a 70 diesel with a 3 bottom 555h. At night on a long furrow the top of the muffler was red hot. Fortunately I still have the tractor.
Great job of restoring those awesome tractors. they sound and run great. I have a JD 950. Love the Green and Yellow machines! Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
I have spent many hours on a 720 and 620 we used the 720 to run the forage harvester these were awesome tractors in their day one thing I have to say is our pony motor always had plenty of blue smoke coming out under the hood and if you stalled it in the field you normally didn't have enough gas to run the pony motor and had to walk back to the barn to get another thimble full of gas
From 1962 till 1972 plowed with both 70s 4010,20s...some long cold days, snow rain..heat house's keep the chill off ... but damp misty days would make you back at times shiver...you're sure to sleep well after a 12 hr plus days
Love watching these old work horses in action Used to have a 720 diesel electric start. Sold it on the farm sale. Regret that decision. Still have 2 really nice 520's and a very rare 2520 diesel wide front, and a nice 1953 50.
I spent many many hours on a 530 720 B John Deere’s. Was kinda of a bid deal to run the 720 the big horse. Sure miss those days things sure seemed simpler not easier but loved every minute of it. Probably explains why can’t hear very good out of left from looking back
This sounds dumb but I wish I could hit the like button twice. I love 2 cylinder John Dears. And Minneapolis Molines are my second favorite. Old Farmall are great also. I guess I just like old iron. Their what I grew up on.

I have a 1958 720. Pulls a 4-16 Oliver mounter plow. Those 720/730s are beautiful. Mines is a work tractor but slowly fixing her up so I can paint it nice some day. I'm afraid if I make it as pretty as these are I won't want to get it dirty.
I love hand clutch tractors the first hand clutch tractor I drove was my cousins Minneapolis moline u and I’ve wanted one ever sense now I want 730 trike and a 4 wheel one gas and one diesel.
Love those 2cylinders. Had my share of fun on a 720 diesel with a 4 bottom plow and during planting a 14 ft harrowgator. The best time of my younger years.
I promised my Dad so many years ago not to follow him and his way of life. I didn’t but once but I told him that I had began to dairy and work a farm but had no other alternative. He understood. He’s gone now and I so much miss the farm, the work and the worry that goes with it but most of all, I miss him.
When I was 10 years old Pop put me on our 720 diesel with a 4 bottom Case plow.I plowed every acre of our 400 acres with that rig for the next 7 years until we traded our 720 in on a new 1966 4020. We got $950 for the 720 on the trade. Should have kept it!
Flyerbob 1 Sure was! My Dad bought a Ford 8N and 5 pieces of equipment for $500 in 1966. I know we’re talking about two different tractors, but the thought is the same. This was in NE MN. Money was tight.
My uncle had a pair of Case LA tractors. Very thirsty ones. Replaced by newer Case tractors but my favorite is the Allis Chalmers D19 turbo diesel. Was fortunate to have kept that one, not sell or trade it for anything.
When i was a kid and was into antuiq tractor pulls this was my dreem tractor back when we hade 1000$ old farmalls and jd A a local tractor colector hade one and it was. Dream to get it off him one day
Also the hp hours per gallon. The 720 diesel (followed VERY closely by the R) held the fuel economy record at the Nebraska tractor tests for many, many years.
Wasnt those pony motors much similar to what was on the Cat D4? They sound just like one. The gas tank on mine is always full of rust. Pain in the butt!
North Dakota Ham the pony motor on the R is very similar to the Cat D2/D4 design, an opposed flathead twin. The later JD ponies were OHV v4's. Cute little things, they were only 18.85 cubic inch and ran at 6000 rpm. In many ways more sophisticated than the main engine they were cranking over.
730D pulling a 4 bottom trailer plow with no issue. Try a 5-14 or 4-16 F145 Semi mount. The weight transfer will let you pull it but in 3rd on the land you are working here.

I’m 52 years old and I can remember as a kid hearing that familiar sound rolling through the river bottom. Great video! Thanks fellas!

Great tractor. I really liked the 730. 😀
Years ago I acquired a model M JD. Lots of times I would start it up just to listen to the soothing sound of that two cylinder idling peacefully.
Yes, thanks for the correction. I edited it.

Plowing is an art. You either understand it, or you don't.
I'm surprised that they are still plowing, since no till has pretty much taken over since the 70's and 80's!
we useto have a 730 John Deere long ago on my dads farm, sounds good

Great video, enjoyed it very much, nice equipment!
Beautiful tractors!
Just wondering. If you have three JD two bangers running sitting side by side Will they eventually get sympathy puts? Putting in unison?
Nice "herd" of Deere! I would love to be in a big field plowing like that!
Nothing like hearing a JD putting hard pulling a four bottom plow.
I LOVE hearing the diesels and especially the slight smoke when they pull hard.
Nice too see Mr. Joe Gerner on a MM "U". Thought he was a JD guy?
Joe is a JD guy, I believe, but he appreciates other color, too.
So Awesome !! Love it !!
Nothing like the sound of a popping johnny😊
Nice sound but I have almost total hearing loss in my left ear on account of that pop pop pop
You need to let that pony motor run allot longer! At least a minute to get your oil pressure up! You guys should know better!

"black as coal"
A fair bit better than the sand loam I have.
I had gotten a 3 bottom plow for my '38 JD D not too long ago, and I live like an hour away too.
In their horsepower range, the old two cylinder John Deere’s torque exceeded any other tractor by far. Amazing what these tractors can pull.
Also the hp hours per gallon. The 720 diesel (followed VERY closely by the R) held the fuel economy record at the Nebraska tractor tests for many, many years.
Don't forget to shut the gas off on the ponys. Pony oil drops into the diesel motor. Not a cheap mistake
Nice line up!
730 suppose to have direct start. First year it was availsble
John deer with all that tork is ready to push that mollean down the field
I learned to plow on a u-moline like yours with 3-14 jd rope trip plow. I still have the U, 1949.
Grew up on j d model m two 14' mole bord. plow still missing the sound of two cylinder under a lodè
There nothing like the sound of a JD 730
Good looking old iron and dirt.
Nothing sounds like a Deere
If it's not green it's not to be seen it is what it is yall the jd man😀😁😉😃
I am glad they are getting used some. Sitting in a Museum isn't good on tractors.
I 100% agree, Jay. It's good to see them in the field!
Wish id known about this. I woulda drove over to watch
What size are the rear tires on the 730 diesel?
Man looks like 18.4 38s on the back
Nice size front rubber as well looked good
They are 16.9-38 on the rear and 11L-15 on the front.
Awesome I am trying to buy a 720 now waiting for the guy
Nice tractors
