Was there a second part for this tutorial? If not could I suggest doing a human figure skeleton and compare it with a fully fleshed human. Thanks for the great video
Hi Lou2394, there is no Part 2.... YET! It’s been in my lineup for sometime, but I haven’t had a chance to work on the figure very much. Definitely something I need to prioritize.
These videos are great!! Really got me interested in sculpting. I don't know if I'm your only South African fan but, was just wonder what the bare minimum I would need to start sculpting was? I'm a student and can't afford a lot of the stuff you use in your videos but really want to get started. Down here in S.A we don't have as easy access to all the stores you have in America and shipping is ridiculous especially with the exchange rate. So just wanted to know is there like a Tom Mason's beginner set for crafting minis?
+Cuan Swan this might actually make a good video. But to answer your question, I consider the bare minimum as follows: 1. A burnishing tool. My first ever one was a cuticle pusher with a rounded head picked up from the cosmetic section of a local grocery store. 2. A hobby knife. Like an X-Acto blade or a scalpel. 3. Greenstuff Putty. Officially called Kneadatite. Or ProCreate if you prefer that. I suggest Greenstuff though because even though I don't exclusively sculpt with it, I use it in some form with everything I sculpt. 4. Optional: Polyclay such as FIMO or Super Sculpey Firm. You don't need this to sculpt miniatures, but as you might have seen, I prefer working in this material. Good luck!
You are a tuly artist man!! Please, tell me... How do u take this mini of the wood after the work is finished? (How did you attach it on the first place? ;v)
The block I am sculpting on is actually a vice. Two pieces of wood stuck together. The wires of the armature go down in between the blocks and then they are clamped together. That way the miniature can't fall off.
April 21, 2018----Thanks for the video as I wondered if anyone was doing skeletons. Got back into modeling, but it's zombie/apocalypse dioramas in 1/35th scale. Some of them I want to do will have A LOT of skeletons laying around as survivors head for somewhere. Checked Evilbay and only had 2 options: Verlinden set which has 2 skeletons, one plain, the other in a rotting uniform which costs a total of $42. That ain't cheap. The other was 1/3nd scale for $7 including shipping, bought that. The figure is NOT 1/32nd scale and if I put it in a diorama, that person had to be at least 7 feet tall. Adding to this, the skull was wrong, not even looking like a normal humans skull. After watching this and other videos of yours, going to try and create some skeletons, some whole, other just body parts like rib cage, etc. Once baked, make a molds of everything and for the resin casting of the rib cage, will use my Dremel to create a hollow chest/rib area as I want some grass growing thru it.
Hello. I find your videos very useful as I'm teaching myself how to sculpt. Iv started a lot of projects, but only ever finished two small ones. Iv only just started using green stuff thanks to your videos, but I mostly use a 50/50 mix of SuperSculpy and SculpyFirm. Have you ever used it and is it ok to use on a miniature scale or only lager sculpts? Keep up the good work.
I made my own character for the game based on your mini sculpting super show series. img09.deviantart.net/0748/i/2017/102/b/2/yamadaevolution_by_neoteraflare-db5ipki.png
Hey. I'm new to your videos. Really enjoying them so far. I have a question I haven't stumbled across yet. But, do you have any links that lead directly to an image or the item for order of your materials? Maybe a link to a list that links to the product. I may just be missing it. That's for the videos and have a good day.
Are you talking about links to the specific tools and materials I use? I don't have a link for that yet, but I am planning on doing a beginner series very soon which will go through all of that.
HA! I totally forgot that I hadn't recorded sculpting the spine. For that, I coated the spine armature similar to how I did the main bone. From there just cut in all the vertebrae.
You are a skilled communicator, sculptor, and thinker. Thanks a lot for making all these videos!
My pleasure!
This has been very helpful and inspiring. I can't wait to see the next sculpting project!
Dude, you're awesome! I love your vids, very informative~
Happy sculpting!
+DarkMorningFilms awesome, thanks!
Really informative! I'm going to have to try my hand at miniatures at some point, and go back through your MSSS episodes.

Hey Tom, did you ever do the one where you show us how to do the Skulls? Couldn't see it anywhere? it wasn't #22
I haven’t done that one yet. It’s still on the list though.
Nice job !
Thanks!

+Mr Green 50/50 Super Sculpey and Sculpey Firm should work totally fine for miniatures.
Thanks. This is just what I need. I wanted to make some undead for our role-playing game sessions.
+neoteraflare awesome! Happy it helps.

Very cool! This turned out GREAT! So honored to hear my videos helped.
I have to thank you for making these videos. These helped me a lot. This is why I subscribed on patreon too.

Thank you very much for the response and the information. I am looking forward to this beginners course.
Brilliant video and awesome sculpture.
What camera and lens did you us to film this? The focus is great throughout.
Thanks Shane. Believe it or not, it's just an iPhone 6 under okay lighting :)
Never let the tech hold you back!
We never got a part 2 on skulls. :(
It's still on my list. I'll have to see if the patrons will vote it up sometime.
Hi, so what's the difference between the straight ProCreate with the mix you use?
Mixing in a little Aves makes the ProCreate a little softer to work with and it cures as a harder material. That's main differences.
Thx for the answer!
Do you still work at Primer Packing
Yup. Do you? I was wondering. Haven't seen you around in awhile.
@@TomMasonSculptor not anymore
where to buy greenstuff putty in philippines?
No idea. I would look for an online retailer who is willing to ship to you. Perhaps www.fantization.com
How did you do the spine?
HA! I totally forgot that I hadn't recorded sculpting the spine. For that, I coated the spine armature similar to how I did the main bone. From there just cut in all the vertebrae.
Was decent, but the wing bones are all wrong. Google "vulture skeleton" for reference.
before i start your video i watched the anime Ghost in the shell xDDD
HA! That's awesome.
