I don't even know why I'm watching this, I can't even afford either lol
Same, after i watch these videos i like to watch videos of the camera i have to try to mitigate GAS
We can dream tho right.
I couldn't afford either, used credit card for a7s3, worth every penny but it's not the best financial situation to be in 😞 not recommending, but if doing this then at least find 0%apr card
I've watched A LOT of reviews on the fx3 so far and your "fast pass" Disneyland analogy is amazing and really goes a long way to explaining who this is for. Nice work mate!
Dropped a like just for the intro! Everything after is gravy! Thanks B! The FX3 graded footage in the side-by-side looks very slightly warmer
Hey, i'm consused. you're saying the image is identical on both, but there's a difference very visible, one looks warmer than the other... but not consistently. Did you used the same white balance? I really like to see a side by side comparison. Thank you!
Fortunately,I had both of them! Literally there’s lot of difference between them Not in quality that much but in purpose 🔥 As far as I’m concerned, Fx3 is worth in-terms of technical side …
If you guys are looking for photography & videography at the semi professional level. Photographer’s best choose ever.
You can do both at high quality footage for sure…
If you are focusing more flimic
like videos with more advanced
settings ( SLR inputs ,colour tone ,
higher frame rate , frame free camera ,
portable, build quality, weather sealed,
Cooling fan, waterproof….) and also like to take photographs ,fx3 is your camera.
Great review, I purchased the FX3 and it should be here tomorrow. I'll be using it on 2 shoots this week and this review confirmed my reasons for going with the FX3 over the A7Siii. Looking forward to working with the FX3 and hoping that there will be some great software upgrades for it in the future!
So, I recently upgraded to the siii from my much loved a7iii. I do wedding videos 80% of the time. Sometimes, I'm second shooting for my fiance (the photographer in our company). I'm absolutely in love with the a7siii! I did consider the fx3, but felt that the siii was more well rounded for me. Honestly, I don't see the audio inputs, extra mounting locations, or the top handle to be significant enough for me to go fx3. I record audio on DR10Ls and shotgun mics. I keep my primary camera on a gimbal most of the day. I do not use monitors or any other camera mounted accessories. I try to keep my load out light and simple. All that being said, I definitely need to upgrade my second camera. The 8 bit color out of the a7iii is drastically different. I am considering the fx3 for this, but I just don't know. Your video is definitely very helpful, and a well done comparison. I think you actually helped me decide against the fx3 again! Not knocking it, but I think the a7siii just fits my needs without the extra cost.
the side by side looked light slightly different colors. the fx3 looked slightly warmer and the a7siii had a tiny green tint. (except the shot at 1:36, that looked reversed). Also curious if the fx6 would be the same as these.
Probably a difference in white balance?
As for the FX6 the footage looks a bit less contrasty and the skin tones are a little bit more pinkish (but small picture profile tweaks in-camera can make them match 100%)
Yes indeed ! when he said "it looks exactly the same", i was like : "Hum, dude... you kidding, right ? !" And just before he was saying every setting were the same, before listing them, but not mentionning the WB, which i guess he set it on auto. such an amateur.
@@GuillaumeB7 Sure, he probably got the white balance wrong
Good point on the processor and updates. Might have to pick one up in addition to my a7siii as a cam
that was a great analogy. helped me put things into context.
That fast pass comparison helped me make my decision! Copped!
intro was CLASSIC 🖤
What a great video! I've pre ordered the FX3 to replace my Sony A6500. Also it will be a great B camera for my FS7 rig. Can't wait!
You should switch it around. The FX3 is gonna smoke that FS7 for sure.
@@surfcollector Kinda already did by now. Most of my projects I film with the FX3 nowadays and the FS7 is still great for interviews. Can't get enough of the FX3 look. I think I will be keeping the FS7 though.
Very well put thanks B
Get Brandon. I commented before that I live in Houston too which is why I subbed (other than the fact I like your content). If you need a “model” or stand in for some of these test, I’m down to help out
You convinced me in buying fx3 for videographers who use the device mainly for video with audio and gimbalwork
I'm an A7S III owner. I need 2 more cameras for my workflow. I really want FX3 but after watching so many videos, I started using EVF on my S III. Not for filming but for previewing the footage. I usually film phones and I need to play with them meaning I need to look at the phone's screen and trust Sony's autofocus which works 99.5%. However, I still want to preview the footage before I come back to my studio. And yes, I usually work with a 7" monitor but when I'm shooting on location or traveling, a flippy screen + EVF helps. Still want that FX3 though.
EVF is not that big of a deal unless you're a pro photographer. But content creators? Flip out screen is more efficient. That's why people use monitors on DSLRs & Mirrorless when shooting videos.
And a touch screen that you can manually change the focus while shooting? Who needs an EVF? You're already in focus! 😂
Content creators are just afraid of stepping out of the confort zone and try something totally new. If only the FX3 was 8k... That and the top handle would set the bar very very high. But it's still worth the price.
When Canon released the C70 I went nuts 🤪. And I promised myself to buy it. But the FX3? it's my dream camera. 🤩
EVF is so good for checking exposure but these days I dont use it enough over my Atomos monitor with scopes. The big thing for me is the 4 channels of audio* You can have the two XLR jacks for 2 mics and then you can split the 3.5mm channels. Essentially I could mic up 4 people and record off one camera right out of the box. Would save me so much time in setup. Wouldnt have to use an external recorder etc.
@@DamirMohamed46 How can a 12MP sensor record an 8k shot? Think you are asking a bit much of it.
I've shot video on the beach in mid day. You can't see the screen. Had to use evf. And Sony has the same audio set up that you can buy for the a7s3. I do like the tally lights on the fx3.
@@carlkim2577 I live LITERALLY 1 minute from the beach, have shot there multiple times. Never had an issue looking at the atomos but agree an EVF is much better for exposing. In saying that, multiple channels of audio (better built in) to the FX3 than the a7siii with that attachment.
There is one thing I really like though. It is the side placed screw hole. I think that would be useful if you wanna shoot profile.
I dont think this video is an amazing revelation. But the fact is, while this camera offers an easier start for those getting into video, they failed on ND filters. If you added ND filters and the ability to add custom luts, it would have smashed a7siii without a question. The best thing about this camera though, is the fact that it drops the price of the a7siii.
Yep agreed. In the end I went for the siii after very careful consideration and the lack of NDs was the nail in the coffin. If sony bring out an fx4 with NDs... well I'll be all over that like a cheap suit.
Where did you get the info on the fx3 having a different processor than a7siii? All I see is Bionz XR for both...
They’re both the same dual Bionz XR processor. Sony made it seem like it was only dual for A1 though despite Bionz XR being natively dual. He might need to re-address it
@@HAlariousInc 🤙
Disney fast pass! You are a genius. This was a great explanation. I’ll be buying my Fx3 once I make some money off my A1😉.
Just updated my S3! dang nice profile, very bright out of the box... perfect for blurry backgrounds and blown highlights.
They should have made the FX3 more "cinema" having the HIGH-LOW gain like the FX6. How the S3 shows you the ISO value is a mess and very confusing depending on the profile you're shooting.
Great review! As a recent A7SIII buyer I would have felt gipped by the FX3 if it had NDs built-in. The XLR inputs are nice, but I use a dedicated field recorder for sound which I think will always have better pre-amps. Otherwise I'm happy that my A7SIII has an EVF for those too sunny situations when even my external monitor isn't bright enough.
I’m leaning toward getting A7SIII for the EVF too. Curious to know what field recorder you use for audio. Also, how do you connect it?
Great assessment.
To be sure, does the FX3 allow for bracketed shots as well?
You rock. I really like your style of thinking 😎
I appreciate the fact that you're looking out for people who are thinking about spending their hard-earned money on one of these cameras, and I also appreciate the effort you put into making this, but I think you might want to watch these clips back on a color-accurate monitor. There is a clear difference in the shadows and low-mids that I think you may not be seeing. I'm watching this video on a Dell P2219HE, which is designed for color accuracy, and I'm seeing more of a yellow/green tint in the low-end for the A7 clips, and the FX3 clips look more neutral.
That being said, I know that everyone is talking about how the FX3 and the A7Siii are exactly the same on the inside, so it could be an issue of differences between the gamma or white balance settings you used for each camera when recording. Point being, you may still be right about what you're saying, but there are in fact notable differences between these two pieces of footage. If you still have the FX3 at your disposal, I'd try making sure each setting between it and the A7Siii is exactly the same and running this test again.
Hope that's a fair critique. You make great content my friend. :)
Is the Fx3 weather proof? Or is it not as good because of the fans?
Agree, would like to see a price drop because I record audio separately.Affordable lenses for the zoom function would be great. It is a great camera for the cine folks as a B-roll versatile handheld.
Already own a few A7siii’s, no regrets. If I have to replace any or get additional cameras, I would consider picking up an fx3.
Imagine the FX3 without the top handle for couple hundred €€€ less. That would be it
Great video and super helpful! 07:19
- might not want to say that.
Am i missing something here. You say at the start they look exactly the same... but then the side by side looks different on the guys skin and hoodie. Different lenses or?
Il tell you that living in a mostly sunny country and having looked at the A7s3 rear screen I have to say that the EVF is gonna be crucial. The fact that you get an EVF equipped camera for less money is a no brainer. The rear screen on the A7 with its poor peaking is just not good enough. I dont think enough people are giving that rear screen the hard time it deserved. Compare it to the C70 and its night and day.
That actually makes a lot of sense. As a video only shooter the FX3 does make more sense. I'm really contemplating selling or trading my FX9 for an FX6 and FX3. FX9 is a bit overkill...but man I love Sony cams. And 2 cams with essentially identical sensors but one super small and light and one bigger and more "pro" looking with internal ND makes a lot of sense. Oh if one year ago I'd known what was coming I wouldn't have gotten the FX9 yet. But it's been a great workhorse.
dope, quick and funny intro
that intro was fire haha
Random question. Does the FX3 include the little rubber shockmount thing for the boom mic mount? I'm trying to figure out what mics are compatible with the mount?
Yes it does
@@bwashmedia Thanks! Great video btw!
Yes it would be useful to understand which shotgun mics fit the FX3 mic holder? Is it adaptable? I have Rode NTG2 and wondering if it fits.
Super cool intro!
FX3 colors look a little more neutral. A7siii has a warmer tint.
Does the FX3 have worse AutoFocus? It has fewer phase detection points...
good video brandon. honestly the audio handle is not a very big pro for it / rather record external with the option to send directly through as a scratch signal to the camera but having the highquality audio sound and backup tracks in an external recorder is much more useful / tascam DR60 / or Zoom / or whatever does the job. Beside its beeing fancy called as a cinema line camera i dont see any reasonable pros to not buy the sony a7siii (cheaper 99 % similar) and honestly tophandle cages are so cheap these days and give us so much flexibility. What could have made the FX3 a great so called cinema camera, well maybe: usbc recording to an external ssd / i dont complain about the lack of the internal ND (where to put it into that small form factor?), SDI outputs, internal RAW Formats. The FX3 looks more legit but that is about to be it. Sorry for my bad english :D :D
Well said. I'm ordering the FX3!
Looking at B&H, the price difference is only $400. So, again as you’ve stated it really depends on your primary use.
nice review✴️
Why does the fx3 look less green/yellow at 1:37 than the siii? In the comparison shots, and afterwards the fx3 looks more contrast, they do look different
Honestly from a bit further away I do prefer the look of the FX3, but upon close up, its pretty close (as in I like both) but they're clearly a bit different.
@@RyanPutranto yeah, brandon do you see what were seeing? they are different man, but this is the only comparison shots outside ive seen so thanks for that
probably because they where filmed 5 mins apart
Doesn't the FX3 have the same processor as the a7s3?
I mean, those side by side comparisons look nothing alike...at least color grade wise. Im assuming the color grade is identical in post because why go through all the trouble of this comparison only to not color grade it identically. Maybe I’m biased because I ordered one but if this is truly an identical side by side (settings/lens/color grade/etc) then I like the look of the FX3 more.
Thank you for the content! :)
I'd say it's clearly visable that there is a difference in color between those clips. But I assume it's due to white balance. Especially at 1:34 it becomes obvious. Great video though. 🙌 Helped me with my decision. I think i'm gonna aim for the FX3 :)
Does the zoom rocker make clear image zoom smooth or is it still jittery?
Wish someone would go a little more in-depth on that zoom rocker! I’ve got a couple power zoom lenses where it seems like it would be a nice feature, plus the clear image zoom option as you mentioned.
You walk into your local camera store and you say "I want a better experience" sales person brings out a7siii and you say "no, I need a fast past" haha! awesome video Brandon. Totally agree with you, firmware updates will differentiate the a7siii and fx3 and myself will be waiting for what Sony has coming to the fx3. Keep it up bro.
is it possible to improve image quality with software updates?
There is definitely a difference in the footage you shot. Not sure if its because of the settings you used but most of the time, I did prefer the FX3 footage over the A7siii; that being said, they are similar enough, where if it isn't side by side, you wouldn't notice it. Also I find it hard to believe that you didn't mention that the A7siii has the option for XLR inputs with the K3m cable. Not sure if you're sponsored by Sony, but the absence of information effects your reputation too.
this. they are so different side by side. FX3 is more filmic.
Incorrect. Colors are the same. Fx3 just does hue shift.
@@TechTails help me understand? don't wanna argue or sound condescending but genuinely don't know where you're coming from since a change in hue changes the color (from what i know, it may be under the broad "cateogry" of a color but changing the hue definitely changes the appearance). Either way how we define color may be different but the fact is that side by side they do look different and according to him, using the same adjustments.
I'm buying a new camera which one you should suggest me sony A7s lll or FX3????
Check out this video An Amazing Camera You Probably Won't Buy! | Sony FX3
ua-cam.com/video/DBkSkKZzalU/v-deo.html
If you can't tell the difference, just look at the shadows... Can you see now?
Only downside is no ND filters. Sad! Good review as always. Thank you
well thats what the fx6 is for. fx3 is too tiny for this
Best intro yet lol
Does anyone have overheating issues with A7Siii when rolling 4K for a long time? Does it have the 30m record limit?
ua-cam.com/video/qD743B7JuUk/v-deo.html
Where to put a monitor with this top handle ? i prefer an a7s3 with cage and top handle where i can put my monitor. this Xlr modul is not in the right place.
Finally someone who's wondering the same question! The way I see it you can mount the monitor on the side or you can go what Mark Bone did in his video. He attached the monitor to the back of the XLR module's top handle. And yes, I agree, not a fan of these options
This would of sold like hot cakes if it had internal NDs and more weather sealing oriented, would of been the perfect documentary camera. Having some exposure with vents don’t help it much, just introduces some stuff to be aware of
I was about to stop watching this video after hearing nothing new about this camera.
BUT- that analogy of Disneyland really made a lot of sense.
Amen to all said in this video 🙏
I love your content
One point- you can get Sony’s audio interface add on for less than the difference between the cameras.
I think the fx3 is definitely a good addition to the cinema line up
the gimbal have portrait mode tho
0:55 Fx3 vs a7iii?
LOL love the intro!
The intro is great, very funny
I own an A7sIII and I'm having a hard time convincing myself that the FX3 is worth the "upgrade." If I didn't already own an A7sIII, then sure, I'd probably go with the FX3. But as it stands, it doesn't seem worth it to sell my A7sIII at a loss to then buy the more expensive FX3.
Good video, youre videos are much better when the intro is short.
Still a 10 bit color camera 4.2.2
Nice job -- good luck -- "Audio makes a big difference" and IT is worth the extra $1,000 -- True
Audio makes a film seem professional more so than the video quality. Photographer first versus Cinematographer first I believe is the biggest difference in these cameras.
Fx3 🔥🔥🔥
I really like using an evf for filming. maybe i"m in the minority though
Same. Deal breaker for me. Now can sleep soundly with my a7siii
5:04 something.. Is there.. glitch.. Pixelated even in 2160p Res.
Bro the shots you put up on screen are wayyy different in color. Look at the shots with the pants.
exactly very strange
Sorry man, but you can't purchase fast passes at Disney World! lol
01:33 - a7s3 is much colder&tinted blue (or the fx3 is warmer and tinted magenta) - pretty obvious
01:36 - a7s3 is much warmer than fx3, almost oppisite of 3 secs ago - confused the cams?
01:39 - same as 01:33
01:42 - first time they come close, a7s3 still a tad cooler
01:45 - finally they start look close to similar
also, a real "cinema camera" doesnt give shit bout audio, thats a whole other department. or show me that xlr inputs or low-nose preamps on an alexa. please do us all a favour and stop buying into this "cinema-camera" marketing BS. or be a part of it.
pretty sure they where filmed 5 mins apar (unless they balanced both cameras on one gimbal). also yeah, for cinema prodcution. theree is a dedicated soundie running audio to a sound devices 633 or something like that
That’s only true for narrative films. Most run and gun doc shooters love having audio built in since they don’t always have the ability or desire for a boom op.
I love my A7siii
So it's better
the holes... the holes!!! hehe that and the price tag !!! ouch.
😐 No
🤨 Built In
😠 ND Filters?
Sony really dropped the ball / missed an opportunity here; the body is nice but how are you going to label the camera as part of the “cinema line” when it has the mirrorless codecs / doesn’t match the the rest of the cinema line’s MXF codec, no DCI 4K, no true 24fps, no waveform, no ability to turn off noise reduction - and they gave it the color science of the a7S iii instead of the FX6. So it matches perfectly with the alpha line and slightly doesn’t match their cinema line. They should have made this a mini FX6, not a carbon copy of the a7S iii - or at least if they’re going to make it a carbon copy of the a7S iii be honest and categorize it as the alpha line, calling it part of the “cinema line” just makes the designation seem like a marketing stunt
I'm trying to decide between the Komodo or the FX3. Anyone else facing this decision?
komodo should be compared to the fx6 not fx3
Komodo has a global image sensor so no chance of getting a rolling shutter effect no matter how fast you pan and can shoot in 6K. The FX3 on the other hand has a built in stabilizer, better auto focusing and can shoot in 4K 120fps.
I don't see they are same.
There is a difference. Are you not seeing it. Fx has different colors, I would say better, much cinematic.
I sat down to watch this video but then my girl walked in with some Wheat Thins and veggie cream cheese so I got totally distracted. It’s seriously the God-combo though, I highly recommend it.
But yeah, I decided to write this comment instead of rewatching the video. Sometimes you just gotta trust your instincts. I shoot Fuji GFX so I don’t care THAT much about the difference between these two Sonys anyway.
But hey, I’ll still make up an answer and link it to this video anytime I see someone on a forum talking about the difference between them. Don’t be surprised if you see some confused, angry, or even THIRSTY commenters here over the next couple years. I’m pretty good at telling stories so people will most likely believe my made-up answers and then give you the credit without even watching your video. Clicks are clicks though right? You’re welcome!
Alright I’d love to hang out but these Wheat Thins aren’t going to finish themselves. Stay safe everyone! Wear two masks when you go to the grocery store and make sure to like Kyrie’s post on Insta. Kobe should absolutely be on the logo.
What do you mean a better shooting experience? Fast Pass what? Tally lights don't make a difference in how I shoot. You think if you drop it you're gonna be good? Your lens will be the first thing to hit the ground. The only deciding factor here is the FAN. Other than that it's the same camera as the A7Siii. I've mixed my A7Siii in with the FX 6 and 9 and editors couldn't see a difference. You'll need that EVF before you need that fan.
U got ur white balance wrong
Why would you think this is for A7s users to upgrade to? Companies are always looking for new blood LOL
I think you are not even close to the truth...sony decided how am I going to double profit from siii sensor??? Oh we will launch fx3 and all cinematographer wannabes will sell their siii's in second hand market and will buy the same camera from us again😁😁😁. Stop trying to find differences in identical things, even the sound thing you came up with is like getting a k3m xlr adapter for a7siii. #a7siiifx3THESAME
I have no 1000 dolor more money to spending for just better experience,😃
Sure didn't look the same. of course, if there was more comparison footage and less of dude talking with his hands, that would be helpful.
FX3 any day for professional video work.
XLR inputs, active cooling system, mounting points, top handle, dedicated video buttons.
a7S III still is a great camera with similar image quality, but the FX3 is just more reliable and convenient for professional work.
Yes
You could essentially put all the same things on an A7SIII. You can use either for professional work.
2:50 if you’re really that professional you won’t be using an in-camera audio AD\DA converter, but will be using a dedicated sound device like the MixPre II, or the like.
Funny -- my GoPro 9 video footage looks better for only $350
It's that simple guys. If you're a 7S III owner, and you're a photographer, stick with it. But if you are a content creator and you own a 7S III, sell it and get the FX3.
Vlogging? Get a Sony ZV-1, it shoots 4k too.
