- I Built A Custom Rod With A Fishing LEGEND!!
In todays video i built a custom bfs rod. From gathering the parts, to putting it all together and eventually going out and trying to catch some fish on it. This video was a blast to film and it was a privilege to be able to do it with non other than Australia's greatest rod builder (Ian Miller)
Hope you all enjoyed!

I’ve really enjoyed watching a young bloke grow his channel with pure effort & enthusiasm. Ian Miller is a legend in the rod building industry & the fact that he supports keen young blokes like yourself & Carl Jocumsen speaks volumes for his character as a person. I hope you can inspire plenty of viewers to support Millerods. Great feel good video mate. Keep up your enthusiasm.
What an experience Josh!!
You certainly were privileged to be tutored by the one and only Mr Miller!!
No doubt you will cherish the memories every time you cast it or catch a fish with it!!
Absolutely. Cheers mate😆
Once again, josh you have done it! You have brang another cracker! Cant wait for the next video👍
I really hope Ian adds a BFS rod to his Production Rod Range. We were spoilt for choice back in the nineties, for off the rack ultra light baitcasting rods but the big manufacturers are sadly lacking in this department these days. C’mon Ian, make it happen!
Too right - what we’d call BFS rods now were dime-a-dozen back then, and for some reason rod manufacturers think little broom sticks (if offered at all) are what everyone wants. Clueless. I’ve still got my old Gary Howard 5’6” custom stick in use (spaghetti compared to today’s rods but absolutely perfect for bass plugs) and an old Shimano Starlo thingie which does a reasonable job. Similar powers to them but a bit more refinement would be perfect. Surely this is not too much to ask for?
@@mmmbass6068spot on! It’s hard to find exactly what is needed sometimes I’ve got a 90’s Calcutta 50xt rod that is like you said spaghetti in comparison with modern equivalent!
new upload good as alaways
Sick bro like always love your vids, keep up the hard work❤🤙
What an accomplishment Josh! Bet that was a dream of yours for years, well deserved! 🙌🤙
Most incredible opportunity
awesome vid Josh, thank for sharing, so cool to see how a rod is build! 👌
Awesome video Joshy. Might even be my favourite from you so far haha awesome insight and looking forward to the weapon of a rod catching more fish 🤙 ps you should come down to cold vic for a fish sometime 😅
What about if miller rods call the bfs rod josh d bfs rod has the same design but josh d puts his signature on it and you can put your own name on it that would be sick af
Looking forward to some BFS videos now, ots just so much fun isnt it
That was pretty awesome.. so good you got taught by the best and not followed the UA-cam way though that would of made for a funnier video but in the end you ended up with a much better personal experience and finished product hope we see more bfs content soon
First a Hobie and now a self built rod with the help of Ian Miller - your videos just reached a new level of EPIC! Gotta be careful though young Jedi - rod building leads to the dark side! it can be as addictive as fly tying just more expensive- way more expensive 🤣🤣
Cool
I would kill to have that opportunity mate, good stuff
Hey Josh Ur a inspiration to many and one to me Ur my fav youtuber keep up the great vids and we'll done.
❤️
Hey JD, great vid and what an experience! Did the BC reel come with drag clicker or did you install that?
I like the new rod I hope to see more videos
Mad video bro, it's great to see how passionate Ian is with his work!
He’s a top bloke in person
Loved this vid Josh 👍🏽very rewarding too build your own rod and catch. It is very difficult to build a rod so job well done. Al
Josh D on th BFS :P welcome aboard
Amazing rod mate and a great video. Love the bloopers
Josh, the BFS police might come at you with the 3g low end casting weight. One of the most popular BFS rods has a .3g low end. (kuying teton)
Congratulations Mate , turned out great
HI and Gday from sunny Queensland , top vid this one Josh , cheers
Cheers mate
Miller rods once we're good. Now there mass produced over priced average rods. Pick up a Daiwa infeet sk and you will never buy a Miller rod. Half the price
great video josh but can you try to post more often its just I love your videos
Hay Josh I have a good challenge that will be fun and a little bit challenge. Can you do a k mart or big w $20 challenge thank you fi you do happen to do it 👍👍👍🎣
Cracka vid bro, I’ve been really enjoying your longer style videos bro. They feel like a documentary but better. Learnt a lot from ya!
Thanks heaps. I enjoy the longer ones as well. Tells more of a story
Ian Miller is a legend in the rod market, awesome vid Josh 👌
surprisingly Ian's hair wasn't a mess for this video ahah, nice vid mate enjoyed the watch :)
Nice rod! Not far off my custom job, good to see you using a normal handle length and no split grip!
so sick josh. ive had a feeling it was only a matter of time before something like this happened, great stuff yeeewwwwww
Would love to know the blank. There are f*ck all BFS rods in Australia, and building one is probably your best bet. Nice looking stick well done.
Keep up the good work. What was old mate up to rowing his boat right towards you🤷🏽♂️. He seemed grumpy😂
awesome work Josh... I did comment ages ago you would be sponsored by Ian one day... well maybe not sponsored yet but getting there...well done mate
fun video, cool journey
Great vid Joshy!🔥🔥
Nice Josh. I hope to see loads of great vids to come. Btw you are my favorite UA-camr.
Great job Ian teaching young Josh. Beautiful rod Josh.
SALTWATER BAITCASTER CONTENT🎉🎉
What an experience Josh… and well done Ian in showing your trade.
What a great video ! I hope Ian does a line of BFS rods, I’ll be all over it ! Love Millerods !
Just popped up mate ! On it now . 👍✔🎣
Hope you enjoy it mate
The Rod is the most important part of and hunting setup .
Awesome vid man
Hey mate great vid. What reel did you pair it with ?
How much did it cost
Probably ~1000 aud
maybe free and just a good add for miller
You heard the man $100,000
@@joshdfishing an actuall rough price would be good no one would consider that price as ridiculas as it is but perhaps they would consider a rod if the amount was rrealistic at least a starting price
are you fishing the hawkesbury river becuase i never get any fish there
Roughly what was the price to make it with him if you don't mind just a rough answer? 😊
Good on you Josh. Another great video.
Love it❤❤❤
This is sick🎉
This is awesome mate. Bloody nice rod!
Hi mate
Great video 👍
Could you please send me a link for that eel or worm
Plastic...
Cheers
Chris

What reel is that and also love the stuff keep it up
Thanks fir showing me rod building I'm new to lure fishing just bought a rod now to try and catch a fish Thanks for you tips 👍
Get into em mate!
What a great presentation well done keep up the great work
hey josh love the rod mate should go on your store. can you please give me some tips for flathead. love the videos keep up the good work.
Imagine a range of josh d rods😂 maybe some day wayyy down the line.
And for flatty work the lure close as possible to the bottom with plenty of pauses.
Paddle tails are my favourite plastics for em and the Daiwa double clutch 95mm is my go to hard body for em
Fiddly work, did well for a first time by the looks, something to be proud of in the end!!
Sweet mate. What reel did you go with?
So cool. I wish I could afford an Ian Miller rod, They are the best in the world.
Samauri rods are 1000x better, feel and handle much better and theyre also Aussie made.
This is so awesome. Epic bit of content here.
oh wow its harder then it looks
Building a rod is soooo much more than people think. There is a lot that goes into it.
Good stuff mate
Hi Josh, i have a Shimano Stile for finesse BC and i was not happy until i got hold of a 7 ft Samaki, the longer rod made it so much better, and when binding in put the guide feet onto a sharpening stone to lower the angle so the thread does not have to jump up to go onto the guide feet.
That is one sexy rod... the fish tou catch on it must mean much more than any other rod you have. Well done. 🎉
Which reel were you using?
Awesome video Josh!
Yet another unreal vid Josh
Awesome opportunity for you Josh Ian Miller a absolute legend back in the 90s when he was part of Harbord Tackle l got him to upgrade some old rods with Fugi guides for me...beautiful rod mate enjoy.
Excellent joshy 🤙
turned out well. keep it up josh.
We love the bfs we even sell them awsome vid btw solid perch
Wow bro !! I'm so jealous , such a great experience to have.
Hey mate new sub , just wanna say how great I think your channel is , great videos mate keep em coming.
If your ever down the south coast love to go fishing with ya 😉
try do a whole setup that u built like lures reel and rod
My bass combo I got for my birthday yesterday was a Shimano nexave 1000 and a ugly stik gold 4ft 6 1-3kg
Good day when you post
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
Great to see some rods still get built here in Aus!! good stuff.
Can’t wait for the vid
id love to see you catch some murray cod one day josh its real fun. ill warn you though its not until they get real big they start fighting hard imo all the cod ive caught (62cm, 65cm, 67cm, 69cm) havent really fought too hard
How's the Gekka Bijin Air at casting light lures?. Can it really handle 1-2g?
Definitely could not be as excited as you bro but I was getting very excited when the rod was done. Well done 👏👏
Epic vid
Oh I loved watching this cause most times this stuff is secret squirrel and it gets lost with old guys after they die we need more of these skills passed down to the young nutters that love fishing as much if not more then we do
Maybe a couple of videos to show the young ones how and what 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Now you've done it. You see how easy it is to do to put a handle on a blank and get the guide spacing right. The mark up on "high end" rods is insane. Not to mention "custom" just means "made to order" with basically different parts put together.
I've seen a friend put a rod together in an hour and was fishing it the next day
Ian even says it in the video. "it's just an assembly job"
@@hustleandflowit was an assembly job because he shaped all those parts before hand to make the process quicker. Those parts didn’t come to him already shaped.
Does the Goat reply? 😏
Nah
@@joshdfishing Damb
does anyone have recommendations on bfs baitcaster reels around 150 no higher
looks sick as josh thank you for showing me the right way to fish and being the best influencer. i enjoy every vid and look forward to more
Much appreciated matey
Nice one. What was that worm like plastic you changed to after the first bream? Cheers mate
I didn't know you fish in a kayak, and I look forward to catching up.
Good post as well
what landing net do you use? I need a small portable net for landbased flatfella fishing
Do they make these commercially anymore? 😢😢😢😢
josh is a w
nice to have mates
is that a new daiwa bait junkie?
Keep it up u legend ❤
27k subscribers! I remember when u only had 3k back then. Well done bro, well done
It’s pretty crazy how fast it’s gone up. Never would of thought I could hit 30k🤯
bro ur videos are fun to watch specially the one with the longtail. Keep up the good work josh!
Josh honestly how much did ian charge you for that rod
Josh you never waste my time brother.
🙏
