How To Graft A Fruit Tree: My First Experience

  • I have been wanting to learn how to graft fruit trees for a long time. I've done the reading and watching of videos to learn how to do this process. Now it's time to put it into practice what I've learned. How to graft fruit trees. This scenario takes place off of the Daddykirbs Farm. A friend of ours has two Peach trees, one is in good shape and the other died down to the ground a few years ago from a garage fire. The damaged tree grew back from the root stock and is now big enough to use it as a base for grafting. I hope this goes well!
    #growreallife is my hashtag to connect people interested in Growing Real Life. This is a bit of a double meaning. Growing Real means following the patterns of nature. Real Life is developed fully in our gardens and our souls when we pattern ourselves in harmony with nature. Grow with me.

    Like the idea of a nursing branch. It keeps the tree alive whether the grafts take or not.

    My dad used to graft alot of fruit trees in the day in Ohio. He used a similar method except he would pack the area with mud clay and wrap it in sheet strips to seal that area. Sounds odd I'm sure but he was really successful. I remember an apple tree with 5 different apples on it. Good luck I'm sure that tree will be growing and budding beautifully and in a year or so peach city! Good Luck and thank you for sharing.

    Perfect job! Same technique used by Tom Spellman from the Dave Wilson Nursery channel on You Tube. I am going to try grafting this year. Thanks for the video! Steve

    I'll be doing this in a month or so ,here in N.H.,with some apple and some sweet cherry trees.I must have watched 2 hrs of grafting youtube vids this afternoon before work,then I get home and your vid was up.From my vast experience and wealth of knowledge lol it looks like you did a passable job.you can use strait melted beeswax to seal the cuts.would love an update on your orchard when you have time on the farm.thank you as always.

    It looks like you did a great job to me! I have been eyeing a wonderful crabapple along side the road for a couple of years now. I have never done grafting and keep putting it off!

    Nice job, I couldn't tell if you sealed the ends of the three grafts to prevent their drying out. Great job!

    I saw that Paul from back to Eden uses black electrical tape for grafting . It stretches tight and is water proof, but so is what you used. 😎

    I was always a little afraid of trying to graft but you actually made it look pretty easy. Hope you will keep us updated on the progress. Successes and failures can teach us a lot. If all three take would you keep them all or select the strongest? Good luck!

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 років тому

      +Thom Lindgren I should be able to leave all three on for a while. Later as things grow I can select and prune branches as needed.

    Good Video! Nice instructions! Only comment would be,,, If the scions you used were from the root stock, you may end up with a completely different tree. This is, of course, because the vast majority of fruit trees are grafted to a root stock the has benefits of survival/growth to the certain area. Good deal for the the original fruit tree, but the root stock itself may produce bad fruit or fruit poorly etc. Hopefully, it will do well however.

    Blake, can a peach be grafted to a pear tree? I have two very prolific pears and would love peaches as well. If so,m what time of the year is ideal for grafting? Thanks

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 років тому

      +Kate Dansyng I'm pretty sure Peach will not graft onto Pear. The Spring time is when to graft, right before all the leaves and buds come out.

  • @tjaartsilvis
    @tjaartsilvis 8 років тому +1

    I notice on the first graft you had the shaved part facing the outside, and on the other two to the inside. I believe the shaved part must be in the inside.

    • @TCFranklin1
      @TCFranklin1 8 років тому

      I was thinking this too

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 років тому +1

      +Tjaart Silvis I didn't make it clear in the video, but both sides are shaved.

    • @TCFranklin1
      @TCFranklin1 8 років тому +1

      +Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby
      What does shaving both sides do? Or is it just easier to pry them in?

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 років тому

      Tristan Franken The cambium layer is touching on both sides of the graft. The part facing the inner wood is touching there, then the shaved side facing the bark is also touching. This provides maximum cambium touching cambium. ... unless I'm wrong ;) LOL

  • @jackdenial2269
    @jackdenial2269 6 років тому +1

    I guess it was a failure because I don't see your responses to any or all the questions about updates... LOL .. so what did you learn from it as you said? What did you do wrong? I'm guessing from watching the video, failure due to poor cambium contacts or dry out before taken.

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  6 років тому

      I was just studying my grafts yesterday trying to figure things out. Some of them took beautifully, but then later the next season failed. Nothing I grafted this year took at all. I certainly have a lot to learn.

    • @jackdenial2269
      @jackdenial2269 6 років тому

      it's ok... everyone who tried to graft have some failure at one point or another. I got a lot better after I realized that cambium contact is most important, even if the graft does not look pretty. And make sure the scion does not dry out before the graft took. Usually covering or wrapping the scion sill boost your success rate by more than 75 percent.

    Why didn't you just use plain ole black electrical tape like Paul Gautschi?

    • @daddykirbs
