What’s your camera setup? GO:
Eos RP with the OG rode wireless go plugged into a diety D4 so I have an on camera mic and a lav (deity’s lav in the rode transmitter) split left and right in the camera
I have an fx6 with a ninja v, tilta v mount adapter, rode ntg5 and rode wireless gos. I normally carry the signs 24-70 2.8 art as well for the unknown.
For the known, My grandfather gave me a vintage Nikkor 50 1.2 that I’ve been obsessed with. Still love my first and second gen Helios tho. 😜 I recently scored a kiron (minolta) 28mm f2 and that thing is amazing and funky flare fresh.
My FX6 has become my best friend for shooting branded fitness content this entire year 💯🔥 are you going to use this over the FX9 from now on ?

Please do a video on micing in the wind! Also love my fx6! I’ve been telling everyone it’s the perfect doc camera.
It truly is!!
Micing in the wind +1
Micing in the wind please!
Yes please do the mic in the wind video!
Mic in wind- I run into this. Tips please!
Best advice I've heard so far Mark, " Don't get caught up on your cameras, get caught up in making films" there's so much truth behind this because I can't begin to tell you how many filmmakers think that the Best most expensive cameras will make you the best of the best but they are so wrong!!!! Less is more and more is less!!
Love your content Mark! I was a tv news photojournalist for 8 years, got out of the news world and became a corporate videographer/ editor. I find myself all the time wanting to get into documentary filmmaking. It sounds like the perfect mixture of both. This doc series will especially remind me of all the hurricane coverage days down here in Florida!
Totally agree about focusing on films. I have a very similar, but slightly different setup with (insert camera brand here) and it has been working well for me. Would love to see your techniques for mic’ing in the wind! I am shooting on an uninhabited Scottish island next month and I will need it!
Just the information I needed! Thank you! Especially considering I was concerned which one lens to use. The 24-70 may be just IT!!
My normal documentary setup is (two) C300mk2's with LCD's, a Sigma Art 18-35 F1.8, a Canon 70-200 F2.8, Sanken CS-3e shotgun mic, Sennheiser lav and a Sachtler Ace tripod. I've filmed many docs in the remote Northern Alberta wilderness with that setup and it has never failed me. It's really all you need.
The built in ND and great battery life on the MkII is amazing for documentary work. Even though it's getting old, there are _still_ not many other cameras I'd trust in the wild over it.
How do you keep the shotgun mic from intruding in the frame with your 24mm lens?
The shot of the dude standing on the car and the lightning looks ridiculously awesome great fantastic!
Always practical advice. Thanks, Mark. Keep them coming
❤️💯❤️
Wow some of that behind the scenes footage from the tornado chasers doc looks insane! So stoked to see how that turns out, and I think the verite-only approach is gonna be perfect. Thanks for this gear video. Always great to see what people are shooting with and why. The 4 track audio setup seems pretty slick!
Thanks BJ!! Appreciate this feedback 🙏🏻
@@markbone Hey Mark, any word on what the clamp/attachment is that's holding your monitor on???
Hey Mark, thanks for the great breakdown. Been watching your stuff for a while now. Can you link the monitor arm/bracket you used and the power cable for the SmallHD monitor? Thanks!
Awesome... years ago I used a PD150... had it shown on TV and one movie theatre... this fall looking into a different camera... going to make it after my book- A Second Man. ...great job, Mark.
Thank you for your content! I’m in AOD learning a ton and I’m grateful for you sharing your talent with this community.
Love hearing about benefits of the AOD! Hope to see you on a call!
@@markbone most definitely!!!
This project sounds and looks great! Can't wait to se the final piece! Also love to see all the stories you post on social media. Take care mate!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mics in the wind - Yes please 👍
Thanks for all the goodness you're sharing!
I’ll do that video soon!
Welcome to Sioux Falls, SD Mark. That’s my hometown. I’m currently living overseas, doing full-on language learning, and hopefully this summer doing some doc work as a big part of my ethnography research. Your teaching is super helpful, the first AOD course really helped up my game.
Love to hear it Scott! Love your neck of the woods. Maybe I should move here
Hey Mark, I noticed you said you use a mix of autofocus and manual on shoots like this. I'm curious, for the fx6 what autofocus settings do you use most of the time for the run and gun verite stuff? Thanks!
Dude what was the lighting with the truck looked siiiiick!!!
I have a similar rig and I love it so much. Looking for a solid arm to hold my monitor, which one do you use? Is it steady? Tired of arm spinning around.. Thanks!
Just got the Sony XLR adaptor and mic a mounth back and loving it !!!!
So my small lightweight setup is Sony A7Siii, 24-105 mm, Shinobi and the Sony XLR.
Hi Mark, great video! Thanks for sharing. I see that you got rid of the small screen that comes with the FX6, so does this mean that you control the camera and acces the camera menu via the Cine 7? If so, can you clarify the exact model that you are using and how this actually is connected? The link in the description leads to the SmallHD homepage. If I look up the Cine 7 there it says it only has the ability to control the Sony VENICE, but the FX6 us not listed. Looking for a monitor to replace the little Sony screen is high on my list, so I hope you can help. Thanks and love your work!
I'm so happy I came across your channel! So much to learn!
I'm rocking an A6400 with a kit lens and doing my best right now! Excited for the future!
I’m very encouraged when read that. I‘ll do the same with all my limitations…!
Can you do an in depth break down of the 4 simultaneous audio recording setup? That was a whole other level of audio recording I’d love to get into. Thanks for your content and stay safe through the storms.
yes i agree
I agree too. Where are they recorded on?
Hey Mar, great video, any chance you could list the gear you own please? Thank you
The Sennheiser AVX wireless system is one of the greatest documentary purchases I've ever made. When I see that signature shock of light blue on fellow filmmaker's camera, I know they have their wireless act together. It's such a beautiful piece of gear. Mine have been delivering reliable audio since 2014 (though I did have to replace one of the lav mics recently). The storm footage you have in this video looks awesome. Not sure I would stand atop an SUV in a lighting storm though ....
I saw mammatus clouds..Can't wait to see the full documentary !! Thank you again Mark.
Thanks David!!
Love your work man! Do you have a recommendation for a wet weather cover for your doc rig please?
Oh cool you were in Sioux Falls! I live just an hour south from there in Iowa 🙂
hi Mark, nice content! Just wondering if your monitor is touch screen, thinking about the AF of the FX6- is it communicating with the Fx6?
Hey what was the brand of the stuff you called fashion tape? That seems like it could be a helpful idea. Mics never stay in place. Thanks!
Hey man!
I might be stupid here, but how do you get by without the small sony screen, can’t see it in the video.. like with menus and stuff? Would love to ditch mine and just use the cine 7
uwp-d27 includes two transmitters- why didnt you choose that instead of the sennheiser? Where do you mount a headlight when needed? Does the AF become less reliable with the extra nd on your lens? Dont you use the touch screen of the display at all? Thanx
Yessss, show us your wind set up please! Awesome clip as always - thank you!
💯💯
are you happy with Tilta v-mount?
any disadvantages?
I'm considering that one or Anton Bauer for FX6..
For Video on the go; Sony A7sIII, Tilta cage, wood side handle left, ninja V monitor, Rode NTG + Rode Wireless Go 2, CameTV V mount + CameTV Vmount Bat, Smallrig manfrotto QR plate w/ P-tap extender on side, on top compact mount for rails, ontop Kessler Kwik stand going to Kessler Kwik release when on tripod. Usually running Tamron 28-75mm with tilta mini matte box.
Always love your videos MB!
YES!! Good sound in the wind is the bane of my existence. I film in the desert where it's always windy. I have used some AI wind removal software that has rescued some unusable audio, but it was still pretty terrible. I would much prefer capturing good audio right from the start.
Very good. Thank you.
Great review - we run almost exactly this set-up, except we use the Sennheiser 8060 (slightly shorter), the Sony URX P30D (as it's dual channel receiver). Also I usually use Sony G Master lenses or cine primes (Angenieux / CZ - depending on the documentary). I swapped out the Sony Fx6 LCD display attachment for the FX6 bracket, but also use a Ninja V. We've shot with it in -25 degrees celcius & +40degrees, it runs fine!
What a great setup!
Mark, can you tell me what ARM bracket did you use to. attach your monitor? thanks in advance!
curious why you'd use a front element VND as opposed to the fx6 internal. In my experience with the non mist 2-5 VND with that exact same sigma 24-70, it produced some extreme blueing and vignetting at 24mm and 5 stops of ND. Created a big head ache when editing the first doc piece I shot with the set up. Love the thought and intentionality so I'm sure there is a reason behind this! Cheers, Nic
Hey Mark. Love this video. Super validating as I happen to be building a very similar setup. Can’t wait to watch your next film.
Love it! Simple setups win
@@markbone I'm using the dual channel Sony setup on the MI hotshoe for mic'ing up two subjects. Is there a reason for having two systems or did you already have them in your kit?
Hey Mark! Are you able to control the FX6 w/ the Cine 7 monitor? or did you just tuck in the fx6 monitor so it doesn't bother you?
Hey Mark, what mic's do you use (lav's)? Looking forward to seeing the tornado film, looks awesome. Thx :)
I've never been this early but this is so useful, Mark! Thank you
Thanks for stopping by early!!
AWESOME! I'm gonna make the exact same thing with the 24-105 G. I'll use my sigma 40 art for f/1.8 shots. I can't find the shoe adapter anywhere! Thanks for sharing your set up :)
What I was thinking is to use about the same, FX6 or FX9, but with a really good prime lens. I think it will upgrade the image, right?
So that particular monitor lets you add in Luts? Also what recording media are you uding? Another UA-camr said they got 27 mins on a 128GB card with the FX 6 shooting XAVC-L 4k mode?
Can you explain the choice of using Polar ND vs Fx6's internal ND system? Sorry if this has already been answered :)
How often do you find yourself using the autofocus with this lens? I noticed you aren't using the stock monitor for touch auto focus
Bringing Zach? Such a solid creator, I really enjoy his story telling and vids.
Me too! It’s why I brought him!
Great review man!
The 49 to 77 step up ring is a real thing ahahah! Great setup Mark, loved the video!
Go through that audio bag! Also maybe show how you lav everyone up. Do you monitor? I’d be so worried about the lavs getting blasted by wind!!!😅
Hey Mark, any reason to go for an fx9 over an fx6 for docs? Besides 6k downsample?
curious why you’re adding the VND of the FX6 has a great variable eND?
Hi, Mark Bmpcc 6k with tilta + rode ntg3 + wireless go2 + h5. Mark I just bought rode ntg3, almost bought mke 600, why did you choose senhaizer instead?
Hey mark just wanna say i love ur vids! Also… is there a subtle haas going on at 2:14ish? Mby some leakage came through on the second lav?
Best wishes from sweden!
Mark, I'm just wondering why you're using an ND filter on your lens when the FX6 has them built in. Is it just the mist aspect, and couldn't you get that from just pro mist filter?
Hey Mark, I'm late to this video. I use to own the Fx9 and I used the Audio Technica AT875R Shotgun mic on my FX9. I was wondering whats your opinion on this mic and does it fit on the fx6? Should I just cough up the extra $200 and buy the MKE 600?
Looking forward to that documentary.
🙏🏻
Great video! Any idea how much the whole set up costs more or less?
yes
AVX small module that you plug into the XLR port on the camea, with the blue component, is not a transmitter, it's a receiver.
great vid as always !!!
I love your channel Mark! Question on the AVX. A couple of years ago on my FS7 I was using the Sony hotshoe for 2x lapels, plus a top mic, and an AVX just like your setup. I had issues with audio though because the AVX has a slight delay because of the digital processing. That caused me headaches in post because it's was fractionally out of sync and you could hear it when talent were standing closer together and there was some bleed between mics. Like an awful slap delay. Because it wasn't a entire frame out of sync I had to manually micro adjust the AVX audio tracks in premiere. It was an absolute punish. How do you navigate using mics that don't have latency, with the AVX system that does?
The AVX system has 19ms which can be a pain in the ass if you are recording with other mics that doesn't have latency. The way I do it now I use a mixing console like the Sound Device MixPre and you can set a delay of 19ms on any tracks, so your other mics can be in sync with the AVX.
Great video as always Mark. Curious why you use a variable nd on the lens when the fx6 has the built-in one?
When shooting wide open in direct sunlight you still need a little extra ND even with the internal 1/128 ND
Always appreciate all your work and insight. 🙏 I do have one question…Why use an ND filter on the lens when you have internal ND on the FX6? Thanks Mark!
Lol. You’re literally the 31st person who has asked. 1/128 isn’t enough in full sunlight when wide open. Need extra ND
@@markbone LOL. Thanks as always!
Could you do a video on how to get great onsite audio for interviews?
YES! Mic placement in the wind. PLEASE!
💯💯💯
Mark, I love your videos, always very informative and straight to the point. Please do a video about micing in the wind and overall micing i think would be good, I tend to get a lot of bleed in my interviews when i have two people with lavs sitting close to eachother. Maybe you have some useful tips regarding that as well you could throw into that video? Great video always a good day when you drop a video!
Great ideas!
@@markbone I've shot in several restaurants and they won't shut off the HVAC or the refrigerators and freezers for anything. Multiple sources. I guess I can't blame them but it's brutal. I'd listen to anyone's solutions w products or w persuasion.
parts you used to mount your monitor on the side? I've tried this so many times and each time hated it, would never stay in place. any suggestions? Thanks!
Loved this video. I’m almost done building mine out almost identically (working in getting V mount and smallhd Indie 7). Wanted to ask if you’ve used an EasyRig? If so, any thoughts on your experience?
Love easyrigs! Use them all the time
More videos about camera setups and especially audio would be great. I have that MKE 600 mic and it's done right by me so far.
💯
how has the wooden camera v mount plate held up over time? Mine lasted about 1.5 years then got all stripped. Any workaround solutions?
curios why you use VND on FX6? I thought it has internal ND.
Mark. I noticed you use photography lens rather than cinema lens. Is there a reason why?
Thanks
That doc looks sick!! Cant wait for it. Just curious why the sigma 24-70 and not sony gm?
Affordable
Question. Why use an external VND when you have an amazing E-ND already in the camera? 🤔
Can you link the magic arm for the monitor please?
This is my dream setup for sure
Make it happen!
@@markbone oh yea I will for sure!
I use the K3M unit on my A7Siii to have 3 talents laved and a shotgun mic. Having 4 channels makes it easy to have TC and still have extra channels for audio.
It’s amazing. Saves your butt when you don’t have a sound person
man, I need this camera!
Love my FX6! Why the VND though?
Mark great video. What size arm do you use?
I think the main arm is 6”
Hey Mark! Loved the video! I just picked up a 24mm 1.4L and it's incredible! I just have 1 question for you. Why did you decide to use the MKE 600 instead of the CMIT 5? Did you sell your CMIT 5 and are you only using the MKE 600 moving forward?
Probably so it doesn't get trashed if things go sideways!
Excellent 👍 What is your lighting setup for this documentary?
God is lighting this film
Great Video! Been loving our FX6 rigs for all sorts of work from doc to commercial. Used them through this winter and they held up so well in all conditions!
Curious why you used the mist ND filter rather than just slapping a 1/8 mist and then using internal ND filters?
Keep up the great work, stoked to see more storm chasing content!
Sometimes you need more ND than the 1/128 max offers
@@markbone Good point! thanks for the response
When I see your monitor I don’t see the slog3 option on there. What profile do you shoot?
God I love your videos, the insights and the tips..! So good brother.
Looks GoodNice!
Yes show us a foolproof lav setup for wind!!!
Hey Mark. I assume you can’t use the fx6 touch focus tracking on your small HD monitor. Are you shooting mostly manual focus for this project? When would you use the autofocus?
No lots of auto. Just manage flick it to manual when needed
Killer rig
I don’t know if I understood that correctly, but do you power your camera and monitor from the same v mount batterie? I often heard that you shouldn’t do this as there could be electrical surges frying your camera ports. I don’t know if you connect the v mount directly to the cam (not that familiar with the fx6) and the monitor with a cable and if that changes anything. I’m talking about a scenario when each of them is connected via dtap.
I’ve never seen a issue with it on 15 years of doing it
Do you ever have issues with the AVX loosing connection? I was feeding a mix from my sound bag to our cam op and we were running around NYC. Constantly loosing connection. It was a pain. I'd much rather use timecode sync boxes and a UHF camera hop.
Sometimes. It but for the most part it’s been decent
Thanks Mark, at 4:29 how did you get that headlight flare across the screen?
ua-cam.com/video/gz32rH_3vBI/v-deo.html this video explain everything
Nice setup Mark. How are you getting the internal Sony menu to display on the Small HD?
Worked it out, was in the menus ;-)
Anyone know what earbuds Mark is using here? (Great video, btw!)
