You look at Ghost and they look like the satanic panic distilled. You listen to Ghost and you're basically listening to vintage sounding hard rock band that would have scored a cheesy giallo film from the 70s
Now that I think of it, making AND scoring a cheesy giallo-style movie is probably one of Tobias Forge's long term goals. And I can't wait to see what he does with it.
What I appreciate about Ghost is how they simultaneously mock Satanic Panic *and* the pretentiousness of Heavy Metal. It's clever, it's fun & it's inclusive. I wish I had been clued into them earlier when they played smaller venues since I'd love to see them live but huge arena shows are just too much for me anymore.
Old person here...Went to both Impera tours and its literally the easiest "arena show " ive been to in forever. Sure the young, uh...super invested are in the general pit, but the seated areas are very chill. Compared to the Queens of the stone age show i went to recently, ghost seats dont have screaming meatheads and hipsters, lighting up, spilling beers and shouting over the music.
Completely agree with the other commenters. I saw them last year in a large amphitheater, it was the one of the most laid back audiences of a rock show I've ever experienced and the show it self was what actually got me into ghost. I would highly recommend going to see them if you can!
Came from Nebula to say this but I really appreciate that for the most part Ghost and the fanbase respects kayfabe. Also I can say that the flirting stuff is completely an on stage thing. I met Papa IV at one of the rituals as part of VIP and he was just as dorky as you would imagine and we were both just awkward and I had no idea what to do lol. It was a very wholesome experience and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone that can manage the tickets.
I love that he uses strange and sometimes awkward phrases like "Okey Dokey," and such. It feels like a bit of Tobias' personality really coming through with the wholesome awkwardness.
I was scared for a second that it'd take a turn into "... and it turns out they're gigantic pieces of shit and yucky and probably groomed someone," but thankfully it's just music theory.
Re: Papa's brand of flirting on stage. I think it's important to remember that Forge was already an adult with kids of his own when Ghost concept was brought into the world. He spent his younger years in less succesful projects. That's the age usually when the rock stars with an entirely different attitude are formed. Forge was already mentally mature and had developed the character that would propel Ghost professionally. It's wonderful fiction because it is carefully constructed fiction, but that doesn't make it any less fun for all participants. Maybe even more fun!
aah been waiting since last week's Nebula cut to post this: to answer your makeup query, the Copia and Papas looks are actually whole-head realistic masks made by sfx company Immortal Masks (both made-up in makeup and not (also an open secret, as Immortal posts Ghost on their IG from time to time.)) It's why Forge's facial structure is so different from the characters he plays.
I do genuinely wonder how hot he gets underneath everything. Like, he’s literally covered head to toe-Copia’s hair isn’t even real (which does blow my mind personally)! Idk. I KNOW he has to get hot with basically only his ears and eyes being uncovered 😭
THANK YOU i was going insane watching the footage and wondering why the heads were ever so slightly too big. First i thought it must be the costumes but the shoulder pads etc should have the opposite effect, making the head look smaller instead of bigger.
Popping in from Nebula to say that this is one of my favorite videos to come from you recently. Ghost happens to be one of my wife’s top bands and I’ve even gotten to see them in concert, but the parallels between Papa’s vocals and traditional psalms unlocked like 12 different kinds of catholic memories for me and makes me appreciate their music even more. Also: As a trumpet player, I appreciate the important distinction of Marching Band energy and Theatre Kid energy.
My first introduction to Ghost was actually working at a theater when Halloween Kills came out Cleaning up while Hunter’s Moon played in the background was sick haha
I'm a life long metalhead and one thing that annoys me to no end are the metal purists who are always complaining how anything new and anything experimental is not metal enough and is ruining the genre etc etc etc. Very tired of those arguments. To me ghost is metal. It's pretty light, it's certainly not heavy metal, and it does genre combinations with lighter genres, but like still metal. I enjoy my fair share of metal classics like Iron Maiden, but I also unapologetically love all the weird experimental metal, that's not exactly metal, that does unconventional genre mixing, like one of my faves (also happens to be Swedish) Diablo Swing Orchestra, which combines swing and jazz and opera style vocals with metal, it fucking slaps. I also enjoy almost the full spectrum of heaviness of metal, from light symphonic metal to death metal, because like yeah not all metal is very heavy. Some purists look very down on the lighter subgenres, which is again tiring. They can dislike that, that's fine, but they are just wrong when they claim it's not metal.
Right. I’m not really into metal, but I can recognize the style in the guitars and drums especially. It doesn’t have to be melting your face off to be metal. Purists are weird.
Metal purists are the single most militant (and boring) version of "the only way to do my hobby is the single way I like" wankers I know. Fuck off back to blacker doom sludge metal or whatever it is you're whiteknighting lmao.
I've been saying it for years: Metal, much like it's contemporary Punk, is more about attitude than sound. Sure, distorted guitars, 8/8 double bass grooves, and extreme vocals can help sell the sound, but Post-Metal is every bit as Metal as anything from the NWOBHM era and they threw distortion and standard song structure out the window (Alcest, for example).
As far as I know the term 'heavy metal' was originally used to describe bands like Iron Maiden. And that's still how it's used by a lot of metalheads. But for some reason a lot of none-metalheads, or people who only listen to matal casually call extreme metal 'heavy metal', and call actual heavy metal 'classic rock' or something like that. So what I'm saying: is that Ghost actually IS a lot closer to heavy metal! What they aren't is extreme metal
@@angelryan some people call Iron Maiden classic rock?? Classic rock makes me think of like Beatles lol gifkfk And like yeah Iron Maiden is THE heavy metal band. But I wouldn't put Ghost in the same sub genre of metal as Iron Maiden. Maiden has heavier sound for the most part. I think most Ghost songs could be described as genre mixes of different metal and rock sub-genres, but still I would say it's metal, but genre-bending sort of metal.
Ghost is legit metal in the purest, most retro, form. Metal by that definition is self defined, and ghost display an incredible sense of musicality and professional stylistic diversity. Tobias is nOT afraid to expose biases on both religious and musical levels. They are like the PERFECT metaphor, simile, analogy, and metal love letter all wrapped into one quirky, queer friendly, semi-satanic, neurodivergently magnetized, oddly comforting lil present:)
I saw Ghost last year after missing their tour through my area before the pandemic and man, it was so amazing to watch them live. I know this is a popular opinion but Mary on a Cross slaps so fucking hard
Me too! It was.the first rock concert I ever went to and it was truly a religious experience, both because I love the band but also because I'd been so cooped up for the past two years that doing something fun with a crowd felt like escaping from prison.
I was at the Brisbane show. Nobody dared leave until the lights came up because we all thought maybe something canon would happen, and I'm still salty it didn't.
That very last bit was absolutely delightful. The kazoo absolutely took me out, I laughed hard enough to give myself a coughing fit and then went back and replayed it
the phrase "its slipknot and kiss thrown at eachother in the hydron collider" is a really apt descriptor and as a metal head, theyre fucking metal. theyre a more listenable accessible metal than some others. if anything it really feels like a throwback to Sabbath, Priest and some of the more early NWOBHM stuff. the fact that people listen to it and are shocked that it is metal at all in my mind shows how far metal has actually come in terms of musicality. because were ghost to be releasing shit in the 70s or 80s there would be no doubt in anyone's mind that Ghost were metal, hell Queen were considered heavy metal for a period in time, Led Zeppelin some still consider metal, Deep purple were considered metal, Alice Cooper might be Metal? when standing alongside these bands i have no doubt in my mind that Ghost classifies AS metal
They always came off as Black Sabbath from an alternate reality where there was a European Invasion instead of a British Invasion. EDIT: I say this as someone who is more familiar with the 're-release' of their 'anniversary album'from the '1960s' that skyrocketed their popularity on TikTok. And I dn't even have a TikTok, but the fanart was inescapable after that inciting incident.
Metal with "pop sensibilities", which I recall is the exact words Forge has used, too. Adding poppiness to other genres doesn't make it any less that genre, it's just not exclusively that genre. Metal is a pretty varied genre anyway.
@wwondertwin yeah. Metal right now isn't "mainstream" in the same way it was a decade or two ago (we are probably never getting another Metallica, Maiden or megadeth) but the scene is still alive, very healthy and doing a lot of interesting experimental stuff. We have bands like ice nine kills, old gods of asgard (who did the musical sequence in alan wake 2) and motionless in white who are also taking a lot from their musical theatre inspirations with INK using horror films as their canvas. You also have party cannon really edging into danceable pop elements as well and bands like scene queen shifting the canvas away from the typically masculine contents of metal. taking a more feminine, pink party girl, Katie Perry esque persona that's more extreme in its content (talking about killing boyfriends, slicing up penises of would be sexual assaulters, the socially accepted "boys club" nature that exists in a lot of the metal/scene community and feminine sexuality)
Just to add context. The big change between Papa II and Papa III era that you mentioned was due to Tobias's plan rather than boosting the rockstar ego, as was the case in the other examples you showed. In some interview (unfortunately I don't remember which one, I absorbed too many of them...) Tobias described how, somewhere at the turn of these eras, he realized how much fans are sexuality attracts, that even characters as unattractive as the old pope and a bunch of guys in casual robes are sexualized by them. So it was obvious that he directed more attention in that way. More and more tight clothes (seriously, I don't know how he fits into those pants and more importantly, how they don't tear on stage?!), flirting, jokes, gestures... Ghouls are also full of frivolity, just look at the first few Shorts/TikToks with Sodo 🌚 The effect of this clever move is that the number of fans has skyrocketed, especially women, which is a significant difference refer to other Metal bands whose concerts often are SousageParty. The side effect are fanfics... Oh well, I can't blame them. This turn of was never planned at the beginning of Ghost, Tobias not only was focused to a more spooky vibe, but was also very insecure and full of complexes, which fortunately changed a lot over time. But he still emphasizes that he will never be as confident as this guy on stage. Overall, the whole atmosphere around Ghost is wholesome and quite safe in many aspects (paradoxically for a bunch of Satanists lol) but that's a longer story. Thanks for the great material, and welcome to the fanclub! 🤘🏻
As someone that got into Ghost shortly after their first Grammy (my first show [as in, the first show I ever went to] was during their 2016 Popestar tour, before they went on tour with Iron Maiden) and whose wardrobe is currently about half Ghost merch: welcome to the congregation, we're glad to have you. Also, in case anyone wants to know just to be safe, Ghost is probably one of the less "problematic" bands in their sphere. Tobias explicitly wrote most of Imperia as a very thinly veiled (some might argue that there isn't even a veil there) series of shots against Trump and his orbiters, and frequently wears various anti-Trump pins on his jackets. If that wasn't enough points in their favor, there's also how "pleasure" positive the band both is and always has been. The band recently did a 10th anniversary re-issue of their second album and various merch items related to their second album. One of the items they re-issued was a set of adult toys (which sold out in a matter of minutes, because of course it did). Note that this was a re-issue item, meaning they previously released the same set of toys, specifically as part of a collector's edition of their second album, meaning that they've been openly "pleasure" positive since their second album in 2013.
Actually Patrick Wilson sings the first two verses of Stay (the first section), then Papa comes in for the “you better hope and pray…” Their voices are quite similar so I also mistook it for papa at first.
"Look at me, it makes no sense that I don't play Dungeons and Dragons. I'm just too fucking lazy to write a character sheet." And that's the point where I fell in love with you😂. This is basically me, to my D&D playing husband's eternal disappointment.
You could play something less kludgy than D&D, if you have the slightest interest in rpgs or story games. There’s a near infinite number of games, for all genres and player types, many of them are quite simple. There’s a whole genre that’s pretty much DnD-but-character-creation-is-five-minutes-tops.
Ghost is as much a loving pastiche of the metal genre as it is a pointed satire of organised religion. Plus the music is really fucking catchy and Tobias Forge is clearly having the time of his life. I will take that over painfully serious, neck-beard navel-gazing any day.
i got into ghost just a few months ago but i can't believe it's taken me this long. tobias forge is an absolute gem in all regards, vocally, creatively, comedically, and beyond that, seems like a wonderful and thoughtful person.
i’ve been yearning for a ghost video essay for so long, and this is such a great video!!! hunters moon is such a good song, and you explained the weird rhythmic quirks in a very accessible way :)
Oh hell yes, been a listener of Ghost for a while, glad to see you take them on as a topic! A fun little thing I remember from the Meliora era is that they played on Stephen Colbert's show, and at the time there were six members in the band, five ghouls and Papa Emeritus. But if you looked closely and counted... there was a SIXTH ghoul! I loved little touches like that.
i got into ghost via league of legends montage, they edited to the beat of square hammer, and i was like " this beat is good, it fells a little metal " then i watched dance macabre and thought "it is a mashup of lady gaga with metal" and i already loved lady gaga mashed with metal, and ABBA
So funny thing. I was listening to Hunter's Moon after watching your John Carpenter video and pondered what you discussed in it unaware this was a tie in single. I have not yet watched Halloween Kills because I don't hit my horror craving until January due to PTSD. You also are a rare safe space for me during this time which Ghost also is. Making this just the best video of the month. My annual PTSD hell period is coming to a close but not done yet so I appreciate the timing.
i loved this video, i watched it on nebula and i’ve been physically unable to stop singing the shakespears sister version of stay. the sparkly lady is so hot and scary
Watching this video after having seen the movie is so funny. Especially the parts where you’re talking about the LA ReImperatour dates and knowing what happened at those dates now and the lore implications for ghost
7:45 there is prevalent fanon that papa i was a gardener, based on a photoshoot of him chilling in a garden, but afaik they were by a very talented cosplayer and not tobias forge. thought ppl might find it interesting :3 it's cool and there's nothing wrong with it, but a lot of people think it's canon so i thought i'd let ppl know! banger video btw ❤
LET'S GOOOOO. Just started the video but I wanted to say that I'M SO EXCITED to see you talk about Ghost!!! I absolutely loved your Repo video so I'm excited to dig into this one!!! EDIT: Just finished and AHHH the amount of times I was giggling and kicking my feet was just too much to count XDD. I absolutely loved your analysis on Hunter's Moon!! I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who caught the influences from the original Halloween theme in it!! Overall, I loved this video and I definitely appreciated the use of kazoo. Very fitting considering this band XDD
I also just got into Ghost after this Halloween! I'm having a great time. It also should not go unsaid that they did a charity single to raise money for a camp for trans kids!
When I first started watching this on nebula, I wondered if we would be seeing your alter ego show up once more. And then upon seeing the nebula cut, I wondered how you would translate the ending for youtube. 12/10, incredible execution, no notes
I just learned about Ghost a few months ago and I fell into that rabbit hole so hard, and you're hitting the reasons for why I fell so hard so well with this video! I can now send it to people to explain my Ghost shirts. Thanks! :D
I used to wonder what would've happened if I pursued my theater kid music act. Now I know someone pursued every idea I ever had, plus so many more, and so much better. I never understood music, the way I understood performance and storytelling. Thank you, more than I know how to express in a UA-cam post, for allowing me to hear these songs the way you do.
Thank god for your minute thirteen of this video where you explain that though this lore is cool, keeping up with it is buckwild. I have been a fan since a friend showed me cirice and though I am vaguely aware there is some kind of greater lore going on, this is my first actual exposure to it.
Oh man, I just made it to minute 18 where I'm seeing there's controversy I didn't know about and here's the part where reality comes back and makes me regret saying I liked a band
So grateful for this video because friends keep telling me I need to get into ghost (because I'd like it) but I'm exhausted by the concept of bands with Lore if I have to research it myself. 😂🙏🖤
If you think Ghost flirting is potentially controversial, wait until you see the goth section of TikTok thirsting over Peter Steele from Type O Negative. The man’s been dead for ten years and despite some really icky political views because he was hot enough to pose for Playgirl the TikTok audience overlooks that sometimes.
My introduction was actually before the lawsuit. I saw them opening for Avenged Sevenfold in 2013. When I heard papa say “Hello Georgia” and then immediately start singing about Lucifer I was hooked.
Hello I am autistic and Ghost is literally my reason for living so I'll come back here and watch this in a few days after I've stopped sobbing on the floor holding my emotional support Plushia from how hypersensitive it makes me when people make Ghost content.
As someone who hyperfixated on them for like 2 to 3 years, I feel you so much. I just ended up finding a different hyperfixation for now..but I still literally think about Ghost practically every day... Oh yeah, and I have a Grucifix tattooed on my arm..so yeah, I love them lol.
Okay... I generally enjoyed Stay and Hunter's Moon before watching your video but now I fucking love them. You did such a great job of breaking down some of the music theory for a plebe like me so that I can appreciate it even more. Thank you so much. Seriously... genuinely... thank you
Been following the band since Popestar. im so glad they are coming into what feels like a second career renascence for Tobias and i love it. i just wish the first few albums got more love
Eddie Trunk once said they weren’t metal. One would think that the guy who has a segment on his show where people try to stump him on metal history would notice all the places he’s drawing from. Progenitors like Arthur Brown as well as early groups like Sabbath, Deep Purple and BOC. After the first couple albums the influences were widened to include some straight pop as well as the poppier metal groups of the 80s. Impera has a pretty strong Ultimate Sin era Ozzy vibe for me. Metal is an umbrella term and something doesn’t have to be as savage as your favorite shit in order for it to fit.
For me there is a sweet sweet spot where hard/heavy rock meets metal, Ghost are almost constantly there. I'm an 80's teen, growing up with all the wonderful music that was happening in the UK through out the 80s (New wave of British Heavy Metal, New Wave, Ska, synth, goth, etc) and raised by a Blues/Garage/Psychedelic heavy rock mum (who kept taking my records away to play them LOUD when she thought I wasn't about). In Ghost's music I hear echo's of what I remember from my teen years, but something new as well. I half hear motifs used by the likes of Toto, Blue Oyster Cult, Rainbow or even... Bon Jovi hung on shifting song structures straight from Iron Maiden with Pop flourishes like from when the Eurhythmics' picked up guitars again (which is funny as Dave Stewart's then wife is the 'crazy' looking one in the Shakespears Sister video you showed, and she used to be in Bananarama!). Much like the nods you spoted to the original John Carpenter theme in Hunters Moon.
Saw Ghost in Lawrence, KS in like 2013. Small venue, maybe 2-300 people. A lot of bits, a lot of jokes, and great music. It’s very fun to see them continue to build momentum as a band and (obviously) as a brand because they have an incredible aesthetic and seem like a fun group of dudes. PS follow up request for Laura and Morbid Zoo to start a podcast together 🎉
All of my favourite bands are fronted by people who have an over the top stage persona and then calmly go back to being just some guy at the end of the night.
This was a delight. I will say though, once you flashed that lawsuit info, I was SO READY for a detailed video on what was what XD But that's just me and my weakness for dramatic lawsuits explained in video essays. In any case, great work!
Your analysis and explanations are spot on! The context of the Insidious movie really gave me a new appreciation for that cover, and you’re also dead on in saying that Ghost puts a new spin on a song for their covers. Ghost’s “Sympathy for the Devil” is phenomenal with this too. I think someone in the comments put it as a “List of achievements” rather than the mischievous, secretive tone of the original from The Rolling Stones.
OH HOLY SHIT Recent Ghost fanatic THANK YOU for sorely needed backstory. But i Agree Too much homework - but Lore galore is super Koo - Like you, clearly a fellow ENFP
Watched this on nebula but im letting it play on yt too. I loved this video! Ghost is one of my fave bands so i was so excited to see you did a video on them! Stay with me was actually one of my least faves of theirs. I just didnt get it. But then you explained and everything clicked for me and i had to IMMEDIATELY listen to it on repeat. I now love it lmao its so fun to passionately lip sync to
Very grateful for this video. I'm not a huge Ghost fan (they definitely have some bops I LOVE but for the most part, not my cup of tea) I hear a lot about them being in the metal scene though. Half of it is metalheads making fun of Ghost fans and saying it isn't metal, and the other half is Ghost fans talking about wild lore things I do not understand at all. I am looking forward to actually understanding this band a little better lol
Watched this on Nebula originally. First video I saw of yours was your last one, thought it was super interesting despite me having no relationship with the subject matter. Then this one dropped, what a shock. I listen to a ton of music, mostly metal, and Ghost is one of my favorite bands of all time. They are so fun and goofy and catchy and wholesome. Love seeing ghost love and always trying to get new people into it. I don’t follow the lore much myself, but I thought your points on the atmosphere/relationship that the “fakeness” of the band creates were super interesting. I also hadn’t paid much attention to their tie in singles, and I loved the analysis!
As a huge fan of this video over on Nebula, the view count here is beyond criminal. I got my spouse hooked on ghost thanks largely to this video! Thank you so much for everything that you do!
As someone who also very recently fell ass over teakettle into the rabbit hole, I really appreciate this video and especially the part about fandom and the fandom interractions. You put something into words that I was also feeling but unable to really articulate. Also I love your video style, reminds me a lot of Lindsay Ellis. Subscribed!
I just realized you were at one of the shows that was filmed for the movie, Rite Here Rite Now. And yes them getting Cardi C a new pair of shoes was glorious indeed. Also this is a great video..
i need you to know that this video led me gently to the edge of the rabbithole, and then kicked me directly over the edge (to the great delight of my best friend, who's been a fan of ghost for a while and showed me the mv for "dans macabre" and that fan recording of nihil's death at one point, greatly confusing me lol. when i saw this pop up in my subscription feed, i immediately linked it to them asking 'isn't this the guys who keep killing their papas onstage?')
seing you say you dont like homework and wont be bothered to do it unless it is for a project, at minute 15 of a 51 minutes video, then realizing, she is making a project out of it, im watching said project
Great video! I'm glad more and more people have gotten to know Ghost in recent years, the band has had many changes and one of them being that the theater like play Copia/Popia does involve more the public and there is less "shenanigans" with the bandmates but back before Prequelle some bandmates were still his friends outside of the stage and they would have more "dirty lines" with Omega and Alpha mostly. But again as I'm glad you mentioned in the video, it doesn't really come out as creepy, we see clearly this is a character. Plus Tobias became famous with Ghost when he was already an adult, married with kids, his family attend award shows with him too so he seems to take Ghost very seriously, just like a job. A little comment about Stay, Patrick Wilson doesn't just come out at the end, he is the one singing the voice A version too, he starts the song and Tobias comes up later same as the original one, keeps the same effect of two entities or people fighting over a soul. Tobias takes the "Stay with me" parts in between lines and then Wilson does come out at the end over Tobias' voice furthering the idea of "the demon" was talking in between and then they fight. (Known fact I think, Wilson is a Ghost fan yay)
So fun fact me and my current bf took our first date to see that Insidious because I wanted to listen to the end credits and now he's the best thing I've ever had happen in my life
Stay is my favorite song. When Death comes for me, I hope she's wearing a black sequined cat suit and a crown of stars, emoting like a silent film star.
This video is great. Thanks for uploading! I think I went to the concert where he talked about lining everyone up outside, though I misremembered it as more of an “after the show I’m going to” type thing. I wasn’t a superfan at the time and mostly went because my ex wanted me to come along, so I was a bit weirded out. If I’d been as familiar with the band then as I am now, I think I would have felt better about the whole thing. With the benefit of added context, it’s pretty funny that my first Ghost concert was apparently limited edition: extra spicy 💀
I had been a fan since If You Have Ghost came out in 2014. I was finally able to see them in 2019 and once more this past summer. The one memory I have for my first ritual and the one that cemented my love for Copia was when he was teasing the crowd about not playing any more music before the encore. He offered us two choices. One was to play a few more songs and the other was to take us out into the parking lot and "do" everyone in the crowd. Of course the real choice was to play three more songs but I think he had a feeling we would choose option 2, much to Copia's horror he quickly backed up his statement and went straight into Kiss the Go-Goat.
If you are looking for a band that actually sounds like the way they look in the vein of Ghost, the band you are looking for is Batushka. Eastern Orthodox based look rather than Catholic (interestingly the band is Polish so you'd expect a more catholic bent), but looks and sounds exactly what you imagine an Eastern Orthodox Black Mass would be. If you are looking for some iconic high school theatre grade metal videos though: Candlemass - Bewitched Immortal - Call of the Wintermoon The videos for these two tracks are fucking legendary and absolute meme grade material, and the Candlemass track is just a great song in general as well (Immortal is an... acuqired taste).
Excellent recommendation, I've never heard anyone bring them up before. I had to pause and look them up just to see how accurate you were with that description and WOWIE it's an instant new favorite band.
did I ever expect that you would make a video about Ghost? no never in a million years. am I so very glad that you did? yes absolutely its my new favorite vid!
A lot of Ghost’s press releases come out in what is basically sketch comedy, in case anyone thinks they’re trying to be taken seriously.
You look at Ghost and they look like the satanic panic distilled. You listen to Ghost and you're basically listening to vintage sounding hard rock band that would have scored a cheesy giallo film from the 70s
Also worth noting that Forge has a Goblin tattoo on his forearm - band that did score a bunch of giallos😄
@@TearfulMoon Yeah, horror movies have apparently always been an important part of his life. Go figure!
LITERALLY
Now that I think of it, making AND scoring a cheesy giallo-style movie is probably one of Tobias Forge's long term goals. And I can't wait to see what he does with it.
@josemaria8177 That’s because they suck
What I appreciate about Ghost is how they simultaneously mock Satanic Panic *and* the pretentiousness of Heavy Metal. It's clever, it's fun & it's inclusive. @@dorkknight42 Completely agree, I saw them at a music festival and it was exactly as you said. Great show too.
😂 k Granny
Completely agree with the other commenters. I saw them last year in a large amphitheater, it was the one of the most laid back audiences of a rock show I've ever experienced and the show it self was what actually got me into ghost.
I would highly recommend going to see them if you can!
Whats impressive is considering Tobias is
so fluent in speaking in English his broken English speaking as papa is so believable
I never understood kayfabe until ghost and now I love it so much
I love that he uses strange and sometimes awkward phrases like "Okey Dokey," and such. It feels like a bit of Tobias' personality really coming through with the wholesome awkwardness.
@@RakastaaKissa for sure! He is weirdly wholesome through the whole thing even when being horny and it’s both amusing and fun
I met him when he was still Cardinal Copia, but had completely the same experience. So wholesome and dorky and polite. Lovely guy!
I was scared for a second that it'd take a turn into "... and it turns out they're gigantic pieces of shit and yucky and probably groomed someone," but thankfully it's just music theory.
I've been deleting so much from my playlist because I can't stomach some music after knowing what the musicians did... I was scared too.
Re: Papa's brand of flirting on stage. I think it's important to remember that Forge was already an adult with kids of his own when Ghost concept was brought into the world. He spent his younger years in less succesful projects. That's the age usually when the rock stars with an entirely different attitude are formed. aah been waiting since last week's Nebula cut to post this: to answer your makeup query, the Copia and Papas looks are actually whole-head realistic masks made by sfx company Immortal Masks (both made-up in makeup and not (also an open secret, as Immortal posts Ghost on their IG from time to time.)) It's why Forge's facial structure is so different from the characters he plays.
Woah that’s super cool
I do genuinely wonder how hot he gets underneath everything. Like, he’s literally covered head to toe-Copia’s hair isn’t even real (which does blow my mind personally)! Idk. I KNOW he has to get hot with basically only his ears and eyes being uncovered 😭
@@angelstios Part of it is toughing it out because that's your art. The rest is probably hiding lots of fans and air blowers in your stage design! 😂
@@angelstioseven his ears are partly covered with molded earplugs
That comparison almost did me in - I was both! XD
My first introduction to Ghost was actually working at a theater when Halloween Kills came out
Cleaning up while Hunter’s Moon played in the background was sick haha
"if you're particular kind of fun requires homework i'm never ever actually gonna do it"
also
"at my friend's powerpoint party"
hmmm
Ghost is legit metal in the purest, most retro, form. Metal by that definition is self defined, and ghost display an incredible sense of musicality and professional stylistic diversity. Tobias is nOT afraid to expose biases on both religious and musical levels. They are like the PERFECT metaphor, simile, analogy, and metal love letter all wrapped into one quirky, queer friendly, semi-satanic, neurodivergently magnetized, oddly comforting lil present:)
if you like ghost you should check out Halloween their the reason i realised modern ghost was metal I still prefer my metal brutal tho
I missed it, but I genuinely think if it weren't for the venue curfew they would have done something.
Same, they talked it up during the concert. Cant wait until they come back.
As a metalhead that has been here for 3 decades, Ghost is definitely metal.
agreed
Metal is a big tent.
I saw Ghost close out Maryland Deathfest one year, can't get much more metal than that.
Absolutely. I cannot believe people who say they're not.
As a metalhead who's older than you... yes the hell they are! 🤘
I never felt more called out in my life lol 😂
Ghost is as much a loving pastiche of the metal genre as it is a pointed satire of organised religion. Plus the music is really fucking catchy and Tobias Forge is clearly having the time of his life. I will take that over painfully serious, neck-beard navel-gazing any day.
glad to find a replacement for marilyn manson for scratching my itch for theatrical antireligious pop metal
both versions of the song make me cry😭 you can really tell Tobias knows his goth music/post punk
Scary face jump scares are just things that wish they could be the totally unrelated jumpscare in Mulholland Drive
i got into ghost just a few months ago but i can't believe it's taken me this long. tobias forge is an absolute gem in all regards, vocally, creatively, comedically, and beyond that, seems like a wonderful and thoughtful person.
Tobias Forge knows exactly what Ghost is and what vibe Ghost is going for, man's a genius
I have been around the periphery of this rabbithole for like two months and having a video on it is truly a gift thank you.
i’ve been yearning for a ghost video essay for so long, and this is such a great video!!! hunters moon is such a good song, and you explained the weird rhythmic quirks in a very accessible way :)
I'm waiting patiently for the Rite Here Rite Now video essay
Me too
Ghost is SOOOOO the band for me. The music is amazing but they're also funny as hell. I love people who don't take themselves too seriously
My best friend got me into ghost before we went to their concert this summer and oh my god. What a fantastic time
i got into ghost via league of legends montage, they edited to the beat of square hammer, and i was like " this beat is good, it fells a little metal " then i watched dance macabre and thought "it is a mashup of lady gaga with metal" and i already loved lady gaga mashed with metal, and ABBA
When I heard it I thought it was based on Bloodborne lore
Satirical kazoo content always welcome, 12/10
i loved this video, i watched it on nebula and i’ve been physically unable to stop singing the shakespears sister version of stay. the sparkly lady is so hot and scary
Watching this video after having seen the movie is so funny. Especially the parts where you’re talking about the LA ReImperatour dates and knowing what happened at those dates now and the lore implications for ghost
This video has become my Insidious : The Red Door and I too have now fallen headfirst into a Ghost rabbithole
This video captures the picture perfectly
7:45 there is prevalent fanon that papa i was a gardener, based on a photoshoot of him chilling in a garden, but afaik they were by a very talented cosplayer and not tobias forge. thought ppl might find it interesting :3
it's cool and there's nothing wrong with it, but a lot of people think it's canon so i thought i'd let ppl know! banger video btw ❤
Wait, for real? That’s awesome as fuck! And I thought I couldn’t love this band any more bro
Which is sad. No such thing as a trans person, let alone a kid. Lol😂
Delighted to say I'm like #666 on this video. Welcome to the ministry! Good to know you've continued your streak of excellent taste.
Oh god it's getting so much worse
So grateful for this video because friends keep telling me I need to get into ghost (because I'd like it) but I'm exhausted by the concept of bands with Lore if I have to research it myself. 😂🙏🖤
If you think Ghost flirting is potentially controversial, wait until you see the goth section of TikTok thirsting over Peter Steele from Type O Negative. The man’s been dead for ten years and despite some really icky political views because he was hot enough to pose for Playgirl the TikTok audience overlooks that sometimes.
I've been a fan of Type O since the 90s and seeing online people discover Peter Steele has been surreal😄
Bro SAME
SO REAL
LITERALLY ME
I just left a comment like this lmao, I love ghost so much it overwhelms me to hear about it but in the best way
As someone who hyperfixated on them for like 2 to 3 years, I feel you so much. I just ended up finding a different hyperfixation for now..but I still literally think about Ghost practically every day...
Oh yeah, and I have a Grucifix tattooed on my arm..so yeah, I love them lol.
This darn Algorithm never told me you made this! I'm glad I decided to check your channel.
Love your work!
loved it on Nebula, showing some love here too. Your kazoo is to die for 💖
Okay... I generally enjoyed Stay and Hunter's Moon before watching your video but now I fucking love them. You did such a great job of breaking down some of the music theory for a plebe like me so that I can appreciate it even more. Thank you so much. Seriously... genuinely... thank you
You're such a dork i love it
Been following the band since Popestar. im so glad they are coming into what feels like a second career renascence for Tobias and i love it.
i just wish the first few albums got more love
Woohoo never watched any of video's then out of thoughtslime. I had a feeling I was gonna love this.loved you're takes
I watched this video and felt foolish that I just liked the music. Hunter's Moon and the Halloween theme is deeper than I'd have ever noticed.
This is my comfort video now. I'll be seeing you every 3-5 buisness days. thanks queen
I would love to see a deep dive like this on the lore behind Coheed and Cambria
I'm so happy you made this video!!!! Ghost is one of my favorite bands. I ADORE their lore, and I'm so glad you love it too!
Watched on Nebula and want to thank you for introducing me to Shakespeares sister. New favorite band for me honestly.
I honestly didnt expect to see laura crone new video today, about one of my current favorite bands none the less!
Subscribed!
Spooky ABBA! That is absolutely a compliment - Ghost has the catchiest songs I’ve heard since, well…Abba.
Damn, this goes off! I'm listening to them now and I'm sure they'll be on my Spotify Wrapped next year.
Not this getting released around the same time that I discovered and began listening to ghost. I fell down the rabbit hole as well 😭😭
I just realized you were at one of the shows that was filmed for the movie, Rite Here Rite Now. And yes them getting Cardi C a new pair of shoes was glorious indeed.
Also this is a great video..
Omg the mary on a cross guys have lore™. Neat!
I loved your video!!! I am deep in the rabbit hole of Ghost. Very well done!!!🖤👻
I went down the rabbit hole a few months ago, glad to see I’m not the only one. 😂
im so excited about this, i've been listening to Ghost for like a year now but haven't known where to even start with lore
i need you to know that this video led me gently to the edge of the rabbithole, and then kicked me directly over the edge (to the great delight of my best friend, who's been a fan of ghost for a while and showed me the mv for "dans macabre" and that fan recording of nihil's death at one point, greatly confusing me lol. when i saw this pop up in my subscription feed, i immediately linked it to them asking 'isn't this the guys who keep killing their papas onstage?')
Love love your video
seing you say you dont like homework and wont be bothered to do it unless it is for a project, at minute 15 of a 51 minutes video, then realizing, she is making a project out of it, im watching said project
I knew nothing about this band until now, but this was so cool! I have got to check them out.
Now I have "GIVE IT UP! FOR GHOOOOUUUUUUUUULS!" stuck in my head.
Obviously this was an absolutely amazing video!!!!! But that ending had me subscribing lmao 😢😂
22:00 THE PAUSE IS SO FUNNY- He was deciding whether to make a joke or not hehe
If you are looking for some iconic high school theatre grade metal videos though:
Candlemass - Bewitched
Immortal - Call of the Wintermoon
The videos for these two tracks are fucking legendary and absolute meme grade material, and the Candlemass track is just a great song in general as well (Immortal is an... acuqired taste).
Excellent recommendation, I've never heard anyone bring them up before.
I had to pause and look them up just to see how accurate you were with that description and WOWIE it's an instant new favorite band.
I remember hearing that Ghost is the love child of Black Sabbath and ABBA. It is a very very accurate description.
did I ever expect that you would make a video about Ghost? no never in a million years. am I so very glad that you did? yes absolutely its my new favorite vid!
