- Old Top Gear fragment comparing the Renault Clio Sport 172 (aka Clio RS phase 1) and the Citroen Saxo VTS. Vicki in the Clio states it is the best hot hatch there is (in 2000 I think).
I've owned both of these. I replaced my 2000 VTS with a 2003 mk2 172. Clio is definitely quicker is straight line and still has grunt mid range where the Saxo starts to suffer due to just being a 1.6. However, I'll always look back fondly on my VTS as it was like a go-kart for handling but overall the Clio wasa bit more grown up and had a bit more presence on the road. Each to their own really. Both cars I had were unmodified

Let's not forget the clio is 200kg heavier and this is a small tight circuit where the extra power won't come into play as these cars have pretty evenly matched chassis, despite the hefty weight penalty the clio is carrying.

I used to own a Saxo VTS identical to the one in this video. It was an excellent car and never broke down. But even at just 36000 miles it did rattle a lot and the interior was very brittle and cheap. Owned plenty of quick cars since, but I still have such fond memories of the VTS. :-)
Look how well that saxo stays flat in the corners , that clio was like a bouncie castle on wheels.
I loved my Saxo VTS. It had a surprise factor in the corners. Very fast, nimble and a fun car to drive. I miss it everyday.
The full episode of this show featured various hot hatches including iirc a 306, Punto and Polo GT. Each presenter chose their favourite for a race.
The Saxo is a great car. Never was sold in Australia another lost motoring opportunity.

No, it's from the old/original Top Gear series. Tiff was one of the presenters of this series - search Wikipedia for 'Top Gear (1977 TV series)'. Fifth Gear is the car series aired on Channel 5 (now Discovery) and didn't start until 2002.
Vicki was at top gear from 97-01, she wasnt there before clarkson, she was still at school when he started on top gear.

In 2001 Top Gear was axed due to dropped viewer numbers,thats when the BBC aired Fifth Gear,wanting to call it Top Gear they changed their mind as the Top Gear magazine was still going.This footage is from Fifth Gear NOT Top Gear.Fifth Gear then finished and the BBC decided on bring back Top Gear with two of it's previous presenters,Jeramy Clarkson and James May,with a new presenter Richard "THE HAMSTER"
Just sold my VTS and brought a 182 cup, Both cars are great in their own ways Saxo was quicker in the corners but the 182 is quicker in the straights and has far better build quality and interior toys ect. . . Still I dont have a bad word to say about the VTS it was a fun car.

I have it on video so ill try and dig it out ;) i actually had an extra passenger too (camera man), only modification on the 106 was a ram air filter, supposedly adds around 10bhp. The 106 i had was an extremely good example, bought it off a middle aged couple and was rapid compared with other vts/106 gtis. When it was standard it was completely level with a vts with cams/remap/exhaust.
and I suppose you think a CTR will wipe the floor with anything with 30bhp less?

Or they had a time slot to fill and these were the only two cars they could get.
When Top Gear was relaunched in 2002 the only presenter from the old show was Jeremy Clarkson (and later James May). Because of this many of the previous Top Gear presenters were hired to do fifth gear.

why are people hatin on the vts?!, with a decat exhaust, good quality induction kit, uprated manifold, coilovers and a couple more minor mods u can stick 2 the back of clios all day. im just about to buy one from a friend and theirs not many cars that get away from him on windy roads, 0-60 in 6.3 and a top speed of 147 mph.....happy days!! :-)
@mdbchris Evo magazine tested it at 7.6 for the vts and 7.4 for the gti. Basically because the 106 has smaller 14" wheels. I have a lot of respect for them because ive had one. Was a few years ago now but had milltek manifold, mongoose exhaust inc decat and a ram air style carbon filter, roughly 145bhp id imagine. Best race i had was against an ep3 type R and managed to beat it to 100mph and hold it off till 120 before he passed me. Not bad for a small car like you say ;)
Can you post a video of your vts doing 147mph?
The "BBC" watermark across the top of the screen is the giveaway that it's TopGear rather than 5th Gear. Easy mistake to make though since the two of them together are far better known for 5th Gear.

Definatly! see how twitchy the saxo was in the corners it was defiantly on the limit! I really hate saxos but tiff is right they are a lot of fun to drive ;)
at the end of the day the saxo does well for its power and easily keeps up,i had a new manifold put on my n it was rapiiiiiiiiiid
ive had a 106 gti and now got the clio 172. While the clio is deffinatly faster and a lot of fun is still doint think its as much fun as the smaller vts/106gti

@scotty12347 It was autocar im sure who tested it as 3.99seconds 100-0 specifically referring to the non ABS 172 cup, however because of the reviews all being from 2002 non of the trustworthy sites still hold details, Evo seems to omit the 'table of figures' from its online group tests but pistonheads refers to it as braking in under 4 seconds from 100 also referances autocar when it does. the veryron weighs over 2 tons so even with 400mm brakes its not going to impress outright
they never showed 5th Gear on BBC because its a Channel 5 program

@AZ274 saxo has 100kgs less so in term of bhp/ton for -2kgs = +1bhp/ton so the saxo would have close to 160bhp/ton almost exactly the same as the clio. the clio in the video however should have massivly better brakes then the saxo they can stop from 100mph in 3.9seconds. they stop quicker then a veyron as standard. plus the clio is named 172 after it output in PS its 172PS or 168BHP. on the road or on the track bhp/ton is what counts hence the clio can stick to a scooby
I watched this in 2009 when I picked up my black 172, and now in 2017 I'm picking up a white 200.....and some of you clowns are still saying this is fifth gear.
clio is a girls car where as every boy racer in history has driven a saxo vtr or vts at least once in their lives and also the citroen xsara vts is a very fast car too not as quick on 0 to 60 as a saxo but top speed is 145mph so faster than a saxo on a clear road but the saxo is the most fun on narrow country lanes
Doesn't matter what you say, you can't dispute visual evidence.
Funny you should say that because Saxo's actualy have a better score on the Reliability Index rating than the Clio.
So not only are Saxo's just as fun, but they handle just as well, are more reliable, cheaper to run and cheaper to buy than a Clio :)

I don't own either but I drove both a few years ago and the clio was lots faster and handled better. I also had a 182 cup for a while which felt about twice as quick as a vts. Still, the saxo is what 3 grand cheaper? Its a good car, its just not as good as the 172.
@mdbchris Loads of people under rate the 106 gti/vts, they think that 120bhp isnt enough to trouble but it really is in something like that. Ive got a 270bhp focus RS now and my heart still goes everytime i get a gti/vts at the lights because i know he will still be within spitting distance by the time i get to 60 lol

The amount of times i see this comment on old top gear vids. Look in the corner of the screen, it says BBC. Get it? Was 5th Gear ever on the BBC? No, obviously not. Were Tiff Needell and Vicki BH ever presenters on Top Gear before the show got canned and they moved to Channel 5? Gosh, who would've thunk it!
@Testostrone250 No doubt both are good, the Saxo having a weight advantage but at higher speeds, the Clio will walk away. Plus, it's easier to follow on a track. And the Clio doesn't have 172bhp. Power isn't everything.
No argument this is deffently fifth gear,not top gear.Top Gear only had one female persenter and that was Ann Robbinson or Angela Rippon I can't remember which,and that was back in the 1980's.
@jimjim150, A saxo what? The problem with the Clio is when you get oversteer its so hard to get it straight again I know this as I've driven a Clio and oversteer is a nightmare besides the videos of Clio Sports on track just put me off. Don't get me wrong Clio Sports look lush but If I was on a track I'd much rather have a tuned VTS.
It can stick to a 1998 wrx on a short track ;)
@thaiboxer1232 the 306 gti rallae is closer to the clio then the saxo. 163 vs 169bhp not 50kgs between them and supposed to have a similar 'feel' on track, the ek9 and ep3 civic type Rs are id say a direct rival to the clio the v tec might give more higher up but have fuck all tourque so it evens out. only time a vtec has the 2.0 is over about 110mph, and that only ever integras too. rs megane direct comp for focus ST astra VXR and golf GTI

I raced a nova red top in a 106 gti (same as the vts) and was very close but i kept nudging ahead everytime! Most novas are nakerd now but this one was immaculate, best one ive seen in years

this might make you cream then, search on youtube for the old mini clubman with a v8. I couldent beleive my eyes! I still think the mini/clubman is the best car to upgrade due to the easy access to the engine bay and the whole thing weighing in about the same as a tesco's carrier bag!

The clio sport's in a totally different class to the Saxo vts.

I've discovered it was a 2002 autocar review which got the figure of 3.99 seconds, but of course nothing is sacred and so its was sent to landfill after the dad got sick of it 'cluttering up' his loft?!?

Never mind if your vts is faster. The renault is a total cow pat of a car. Many mates have had them also sport ect ect and they've always had trouble gearbox electrical the list goes on. But the saxo is unburstable. Non of my mates have ever had a new cars so all these break downs have been used cars.

once something is on the move there isnt much in it. look up what a WRX bhp/ton is.
Those bhp/ton figures are totaly wrong. Let me enlighten you:
Clio 172 Cup - 158.99bhp/ton
Clio 172 FF - 149.32bhp/ton
Saxo VTS - 130.40bhp/ton
And that's assuming the 172 is actualy producing 169Bhp (172PS) which most of them don't!
Well for starters they should of had Tiff Nidel in the Clio and that poxy women driver in the other and you would have seen the difference. A touring car driver should be able to make any slower car keep up with a more powerful one, which he did.

@Gyulahamar, haha typical straight line driver. Handling over power all the time the saxo vtr/vts are very well balanced cars. Just by looking at the video you can see massive amount of body roll of the clio in comparision to the VTS. If you want a fast car in a straight line then you might want to look into american cars :). Anyways for the money you save buying the VTS turboing it would leave the clio in the dust!
@theprodicalsonishere Lol at the mongaloids comment :P Yeah lift off oversteer is about the only thing that could catch you out with the Clio. But not if you have any sort of affinity for driving. And yeah had a good test of my brakes the other day on the motorway, shame the car behind was too close :( Au revoir Clio.
@rumble291 handling over power? Yeah so still the Clio then... I've owned a Saxo - and my 182 Clio is the best french thing I've ever driven. The body roll is nothing when you see the speeds you can take these cars into corners at.

The clio performs better. Its common knowledge. If you want to stick to youre velour thats fine, you certainly wont be sticking to any apexs.

your supposed to divide the weight of the car in kg buy 1000 kg (a ton)
in this case 935 kg divided by 1000 kg = 0.935
this gives you your cars metric ton
you then divide your bhp 120 by the metric ton 0.935
which gives you 128 bhp/ton
and a clio sticking to a scooby wtf

The Clio is quicker in a straight line, granted, but a Saxo is overall cheaper to run and service (cambelt on an F4R anyone?)and as Tiff said 'just as much fun'.

Both are fun cars but the Clio is the quicker hot hatch in most situations. Got to laugh at the idiots who slag off the car they don't own!
