I will never forget Brod Smith's rendition of 'Ocean Deep' at the Andy Durant Memorial Concert. It gives me shivers to this day; so magnificent.
Curious it was never mentioned in this vid.
I'm guessing he didn't want to remain in the past.
I'm still waiting for a performer to do a decent new rendition of Ocean. It's certainly time.

I played a couple of support gigs for the Big Combo back in the early 1980s. I was totally blown away with the musicianship but also, with the power of the songs! Broderick was every inch the authentic performer. So sorry that he's gone now but his music lives on.
Eyes like the sky, is my introduction to Broderick, now I must listen to more of his works.

This guy should have become a global superstar. The Dingoes should have become a worldwide sensation. Brod has a great voice - able to sing a ballad one minute and launch into a tough rock song the next minute. "Boy on the run" and "Sydney Ladies." He has every right to be proud of his contribution to music. He's always been genuine. There's not a false note anywhere. I think the first Dingoes record is one of the top 5 albums ever released in Australia. I still play it regularly.
Don't forget a great blues voice, too. When I heard 'Goin' On Down To The End Of The World' on the radio, I thought it was a negro singing. Such a unique voice.

First up, a brilliant doco on Broderick Smith, and secondly - just a brilliant doco. From the editing, cinematography, to the colouring and inserted stills, etc. I'm not sure what held me captive more - the subject matter or the art form. Thank you Chris....
I LOVE his self-honesty. Brod is comfortable enough in his own skin to be candid about everything.
There's little point being otherwise (but most people don't practice that) and he wisely avoided the compromises so his regrets would be few.
I wasn't at Sunbury, to young but saw you at the London tavern in Melbourne. Played my Dingoes albums to death and now at 65 have learnt to play some of the songs. A much underrated song writer with a true Australian flavour.
I'm so sad today. In my opinion, he had the best voice in Oz rock. RIP Broderick.
He certainly had a signature sound that was quietly arresting.

Met Broderick once, I was 17 working in a formal hire shop when he had to hire a dinner suit, my boss was, being honest a bloody rude pig, and Broderick said you don’t have to put up with that man. So I left shortly after. Great guy, loved his live appearances, especially Carson. You’re a legend Broderick. ✌️

It is great to hear a great singer/musician tell the story of his and my generation of musicians in Melbourne, especially his beginnings . Broderick Smith has been at the top among Aussie music followers for decades, while still maintaining the dignity of the specially gifted. Broderick has been relevant to Aussie music since his teenages. He should be a world superstar but I sense he chose not to be because to him that is not the most important aim. His spiritual soulful voice can tell a story which cuts straight to one's soul and reach emotional levels in one's psyche which can only be reached by special singers like him. His harmonica playing is right at the top and compliments and completes him as a very special artist with a special soulful emotional, approach to life and living life.
It shows how much 'success' is really a crapshoot and those who manage to achieve real stardom should be humble enough to say how much 'luck' plays a part. This is particularly difficult when dealing with stereotypes. The Church for instance, found massive resistance in England from the English music press which had colossal influence. As Smith said, he "didn't want to go through the migrant thing again". He speaks sparsely but there's so much depth.

Great short film about a very long and influential Australian musician. A very sad loss, with a wealth of songs and sounds left behind for us to enjoy forever.

Brilliant documentary of Broderick's life summed up in a few minutes. Brod is the greatest ever harmonica player of all time. I can't work out why Hohner has never released a limited edition Broderick Smith signature harmonica because nobody can play the instrument as good as him.

Broderick would have arrive on 1959 May 11 on a Monday, arriving on the ship 'Orion'. I was on that ship. I did not ever meet him, but he must have forgot the month he arrived when in an interview he said April....not possible for the 'Orion' to manage this. Just a bit of trivia. Loved his music...
So great to have this resource to ponder Broderick Smith's life and his quiet achievements, which are no less considerable for being under the radar relative to what he deserves. His high intelligence and dry wit seems to have offended people who are less reflective, but you have to be true to yourself, and he largely was. Thankyou.
PS they say as you get older you get the face you deserve, and his was wise and still light.

He's so funny talking about the fans wanting him to recognise them. And describing himself as 'grumpy'. It saves time.
Broderick never thought I was a Muzza or a Wuzza. He and I were friends going back many years. He first noticed me on MySpace around 2006 or 2007 and invited me to one of his live shows at an Irish Pub in Melbourne. That was when he and I met for real, had drinks together, then he played his beautiful songs, and after the show we sat outside at a table and chairs and talked about things. He told me that he wanted to write a song about me, but I never asked him if he did. I guess I wasn’t the average Muzza or Wuzza if he thought I was worthy of a song? Many years later he again invited me to another live gig somewhere else he was playing and halfway through a song he paused and told the audience that it was good I had come to his show. We kept in touch via emails many years, and always interesting conversations.

I wish I'd got to know Broderick better. Our paths kept crossing, from the early 70's on, until finally we both settled in the same country town. He was a fabulous talent of course, and a really interesting guy. Another of the old crew gone.

In Brod's book he talks about a fan calling out that he had named his son Broderick after him, I am that guy! It wasn't quite as cringy as told in the book, but Brod is a fantastic story teller. An amazing person and talent. Cheers.

For what it's worth I thought the Dingoes Way Out West with Broderick on harmonica (best version) was bloody good (still do) so much so that when the Dingoes supported the Stones in 73 at the WACA I was really disappointed most of the crowd did not appreciate this song. Sure, he seems a bit jaded, but so what. He's still playing music and singing and manages to smile and that's great. 👍
I think Brod has sounded jaded for nigh on 30 - 40 years. Certainly during his time at the Station Hotel in Prahran he did.

It seems Broderick had his share of demons playing with his dreams for years but thankfully they didn't prevent him from leaving a back catalogue of rich Australian classics with Carson, Company Caine and The DIngoes. RIP mate - you've always been an inspiration.

G'day Chris. I hope you are reading these, Your Doco has reached and touched all of Us here especially those who knew Broderick and knew more than the music. This is the Broderick I and Our Family know and will always know. He was thoughtful and helpful to Our son when working on a short film, always asked about Our daughter and how life was going. Alli first met him when he came into the Real Estate office in Castlemanie some 20 years ago. I loved his voice and have heard it LIVE so many times from the early days to not so long ago. I shared a Radio Show with the Sound Engineer and Legend John French who knew Broderick way back then and recorded him at different times, then somehow fate brought them back together in this small Town they both called home. We loved our chat's in the street and those days and evenings at The Guildford Family Hotel and We loved that Life Matters Smile. I am doing something of a tribute to Broderick on Wed 3 May and would dearly love to play the audio of Your Doco.
