    My dad bought a 2009 Toyota Prius Touring in the Silver Pine Mica (Iconic Green) in 2013. He bought it Certified Pre-Owned with 23k miles, and since then he’s had it until 2021 of May, when it gave its final blow, after a insane 350K miles, and died. Now you might be asking, how can someone do 330k miles in only 7 years? Well in 2016 the Prius had, give or take, 55k miles. Then my dad got a new job that was 150 miles away from where we lived. Now you can understand that round trip every day was around 300 miles. So if you do your math 🤓😂, 300 miles, every month, each year, for 4 years, was around 300k miles, plus the 55k miles before the new job. But that’s not what this is about. What this is about is that that Prius had 1 accident, probably 5 exterior damages, and throughout all of it, it only had 2 minor mechanical problems, 1 when the car started to shake like a rocket ship when you came to a stop, and 2, when the radiator was leaking, but that was caused by 1 of the 5 exterior damages when my dad hit a dead animal or something on his way home at night 😂. But that’s just the start of it. The crazy thing, my dad knows basically nothing about cars! After the 1st accident and around 140k miles, he started not caring about it anymore and basically not taking care of it, and the Prius was a tank and took ALL of it! I’m 15 and I’m basically the car guy of our family, but pretty much 8 years of my childhood was in that car. Around the middle of April, the Prius’s panic alarm started blaring nonstop. This was probably due to some sort of battery issue or electrical horn-related issue, but either way little did we know it was the Prius saying it’s last words 🥺😂. Around the end of April, my dad was heading to work one day and all of a sudden the car shut off on the freeway and everything turned off. The car kept going, and my dad put it in neutral and went to the side of the road. After a while of cursing and wondering what the hell was going on and trying to turn it back on, it turned on and he kept going. He didn’t think anything of it, but on his way home he decided to take the mountain route, OF ALL DAYS 🤦‍♂️. All of a sudden the brakes failed and the car shut off. The difference from before on the highway and now, HE WAS ON A STEEP HILL. The car started rolling backwards fast, and he almost got rear ended by a truck. Luckily he managed to put the emergency break on and swerve into a curb. The car turned back on thank god, and he rushed back home. As soon as he parked that day, the Prius went “Alright I’m out, peace ✌️” and didn’t start. My dad finally decided that it was time to get a new car, and we got a 2021 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T in Lunar Silver that weekend. The Prius sat there on our curb for another 2 months until we sold it to a guy who got it running and took it home. Hopefully he didn’t part it out and the Prius is still living with another owner….or it might just be sitting in a junkyard parted out. Anyway this goes to show how reliable Toyotas can be, EVEN WITHOUT PROPER CARE! And don’t worry my dad got a new job in 2021 that’s only 8 minutes away from where we live now. RIP the Prius, you will be remembered 😔.

    Nice update, thanks for sharing. I bought my 2021 Prime a year ago and it seems like I drive about the same amount as you do so it’s nice to see how it holds up. Mine has been great so far, I replaced a fully electric car with it because the charging infrastructure is not where it needs to be just yet. Before the full EV I owned a Volt for a few years and the Prime is so much better. More space on the interior, significantly better MPG on gas, and the EV range is really not much less real world compared to the first gen Volt. I’ve driven nearly 40 miles on a charge on my Prime a few times, normally I get around 35 in the summer and 25 in the winter. I rarely take highways so that probably helps. My Volt had a few problems while I owned it, looking at the owner forums it seems like they’re starting to need new batteries and GM have stopped production of them for the first gen so there isn’t much support available. The expected reliability and resale value were among my biggest considerations when I purchased my Prime.
    I’m curious about debadging, were the badges just stuck on with adhesive or did they have little plastic posts under them?

    • @DIYBIGMAN
      @DIYBIGMAN  2 роки тому +2

      Essentially with the debadging you take a piece of floss and you go between the emblem in the car. There’s lots of videos on UA-cam how to do it. I was not very patient so I didn’t do the best job.
      If I do it next time I’m gonna go a lot slower and more cautious and careful. There is no bolts or plastic pieces. It’s just adhesive 3M sticky tape very strong sticky tape. But overall I like a D badged Prius. People mostly leave me alone now. Lol

    • @DIYBIGMAN

      I’ve been using my winter ipikes. you want to get the best winter tires that have the best traction tread design. That’s what I would go by. It depends where you live but I like to run studs on mine to give me the extra traction in ice and stopping power.
      I travel a lot so I want to make sure I can get to my destination safely. I have to drive if it snows. It’s not an option for me. So that’s why I go with the best tire tread design and studded.
      Plus this car is only 2 Wheel Drive so I always feel a lot more comfortable and confident with studded tires. I’ve been able to make it up hills where other cars fail in snow. The car does very well for a front wheel drive in snow

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer Рік тому +2

      I highly recommend Michelin X-Ice3 if you can find a new set. They are being replaced by the even more expensive X-Ice Snow. On both my Prius and my Prius Prime, they always seem to last at least 50K miles running them year round, unheard of for a winter tire. I never use studs, and I live in snowy/icy New Hampshire.
      I upsized slightly to 205/65R15 XL 99T, to gain 1/4 inch of badly needed ground clearance. Then I inflated them to 50psi, still within the "max load" pressure on the sidewall, for even more ground clearance, and sports-car handling. It also gave me much bigger safety margin on load capacity when doing things like filling the car with wood pellet bags. Despite all that, they lasted me 63K miles, versus the Michelin warranty for 40K. Almost NO snow tires have any mileage warranty at all. I also suffered no mpg penalty at all, which was surprising. My theory is that the tires (load index 99, vs the stock 89) are expecting the weight of a much heavier vehicle, so they barely wear with the weight of the Prime on them.
      Other great choices are Continental VikingContact 7 and General Altimax Arctic 12, both available in the exact size/spec above. Other winter tires such as Bridgestone Blizzak and Nokian Hakkapelitta are excellent but wear out way too fast to run them year round. An interesting possibility for inexpensive winter tires is the Kelly Winter Access 205/65R15 94T. Goodyear owns Kelly, and that size is available online for $254 per set of 4 delivered, much cheaper than other similar sizes. Maybe they made too many of that size last year, or something.
      Note that tires rated XL (extra load) reach that extra load capacity at 42psi and above, while SL (standard load) tires reach their rated capacity at 36psi, which was the stock recommended pressure on the front of the Prime. To be safe, you should raise the pressure at least that 6psi if switching to XL tires. If you want to be totally precise about it, look over the charts (of load vs pressure for all sorts of tires) at tirepressure dot org. The stock load index for the Prime is 89 and stock speed rating is S (112mph). While I'm OK with using S tires, I prefer at least T (118mph). And I'd personally never put tires below about load index 94 on a Prime, I feel that 89 just doesn't leave you much safety margin considering how easy it is to load the car above GVWR, especially in your case with 5 seats versus my year's 4.

      I do use the electric daily sometimes twice a day I’ll use the electrical modes I do both long drives and short drives. For a long drive of four hours with one recharge on the battery. I’ll average about 50 miles per gallon in the winter time. In the summertime I should average more about 55 miles per gallon on a four hour trip most of it freeway going 70+ miles per hour. I like the look of the Prius prime more. I would say of all my mileage I probably use about 25% or more of it as electric only. But I hear the Camry hybrid LE can get over 50 miles a gallon as well so that would increase your capacity size. Nowadays Toyota is making all their vehicles more gas efficient.

    I'm seriously considering the'22 Prime. Questions: Just how loud is the cabin noise on highway? Have you noticed cracking/damage to the grill assembly? Have you gotten paint chips/scratches? You mention flat tires. Tire replacement is mentioned on Carfax a LOT. Is this due to lightweight tires or maybe Prius owners just drive more? Lastly, with the low ground clearance have you had scraping? Thanks in advance!!!

    • @DIYBIGMAN
      @DIYBIGMAN  2 роки тому +5

      The cabin noise I would rate it nine out of 10. It’s pretty darn good for a Toyota. Better then my highlanders.
      Yes I guess I should’ve pointed out some of the damage on the front grill plastic assembly. What I used was electrical tape which did a fairly decent job at covering it up.
      The plastic grill assembly is definitely a dislike. Paint and chips scratches nothing more unusual than a regular car. They have touchup paint that works pretty good too. I have had two or three flat tires generally with the screws or nails or some kind of foreign metal object. This is going to happen for any car. Just make sure you have fix a flat on hand. And the ground clearance is on the lower side. Some scraping when parking cars if you’re not careful. But for the most part it hasn’t been too much of an issue.
      If you want something reliable. You’re not gonna go wrong with a Prius made in Japan. And honestly for a 2017 first year model on a new generation I have been very pleased. I don’t think there was too much wrong to begin with it. There was some software of dates that we did in 2017. But I never took it in for that bulletin recall. Honestly I heard more issues after they fixed it.

    • @DIYBIGMAN

      No matter what you decide both vehicles are very reliable. But if you need more space than I would choose a regular Prius. If the space is not important to you it’s nice to have 25 miles of electric. There is the possibility of getting a cargo top carrier. But it would drop your mpg a little bit probably 2 to 3 mpg. For me personally because I drive it every day. I do get to use the first 25 miles of electric before the gas engine. So I would pick a prime. Plus I think the prime looks better. But that’s my own personal taste.

      The Prime uses both EV+ICE to ultimate efficiency. I've seen ppl getting 70+ MPG (equivalency). This can vary depending on your driving. Cargo space is very reduced. That might be a decision point for you. Prime still has tax rebate to offset cost where Prius does not.

    • @MylesV
      @MylesV 2 роки тому +2

      That would apply to something like the Volt which was less efficient on gasoline vs a normal hybrid but the Prius Prime is actually rated at 2 MPG higher combined than the normal Prius when it’s in hybrid mode.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer Рік тому +1

      I have both. The Prime is always more efficient, whether you ever plug it in or not. As just a hybrid, it's the better hybrid, other than the fact that the battery eats into cargo space. It much more than overcomes the weight difference between them.
      Another way to look at it, is that if you have cheap electricity (0.10/kwh) it is like being able to buy 1/2 gallon of gas at $1.30/gallon every time you charge. It adds up. Even if your electricity is crazy expensive (0.30) that's still like $3.90 gas.
      Having the engine off for 30 miles per charge (in my case) also means that much less engine wear, less need for oil changes, fewer trips to the gas station, etc. Also, for things other than your commute, going to the store or wherever using zero gas is something that's quite nice.

    there was a toyota dealership that was going over an example of prius prime cost per mile of 4 cents, but they failed to point out that the electricity was actually costing slightly more than 4, while the gas was slightly less than 4. in that scenario, why wouldn't you just go gas-only? or am i missing some point (other than environmental friendliness...)?

      It depends where you live. Gas is cheaper in some places than others. And vice versa for electricity.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer Рік тому

      Where I live in NH, it cost 2 cents on electric (at 0.09) and 5 cents on gas (at $3). On gas now it's more like 8 cents (at $5). Temporarily electric will cost me 5 cents (at 0.22) this August when wholesale electric prices in New England are expected to be triple the usual due to world natural gas prices going crazy from Ukraine, combined with AC season here making utilities burn more natural gas or LNG than the rest of the year.
      There are advantages beyond money in using some EV range up. It is quiet and awesome to drive with the engine off. In city traffic, you get to avoid all idling losses. In summer, you don't have the engine throwing off tons of heat that you then have to run the AC to get rid of the part of it that makes its way into the cabin. You get to sit running the heat or AC (say, doing work on your laptop at a rest area) without having to pay all the idling losses of the engine. Etc.

She wants to go back to Toyota she had two Toyotas before. A 2000 Toyota Sienna. Then a 2011 Toyota Venza. The reason she would love to get a RAV4 Hybrid. Because one because the crazy prices keep going up like crazy. And two she wants a RAV4 instead of the new Venza. Because one the new Venza is a bit over priced. And they are really impossible to get now. And they did make the new Venza a bit smaller so the interior and cargo space is a bit smaller. Plus with the design of it. While for everyday use, we intend to use it to drive to grocery stores and to the town center, we are also hoping to take the dog on outdoor adventures; things like visiting forests, occasional camping trips, the beach, parks, and occasionally a few dirt roads. Lastly of course taking all of the pets when we are going out of town to visit family and such. I wanted to know if you think that this car would be suitable for what we want to use it for?

      If you have a small dog then maybe ok. But if you have a medium and bigger size dog I don’t think so. Go look at the trunk of a prime if you can. There is not much room.
      There seems to be a bit more room in the back seats then there is in the trunk space. So that’s were I would put the pets.
      In France everyone drives a small car. I have family there and I visited between Marseille and stayed at Villefranche-ser-Mer. Beautiful places over there!
      Also Having a cargo carrier on top for extra space is a possibility as well.

      The cargo carrier is a great idea. I'm thinking that we would get one of those as well for any extra space.

    interesting times (May 2022) for all prius prime (as well as rav4 prime) owners and buyers. once toyota announces that it has sold 200,000 phev's in the usa, the clock starts ticking down for the federal tax credit ($4502 for new prius primes). it will stay there for i think half a year after announcement, then down to 2251 for 3 months, then 1125.50 for 3 months, then finally zero forever (unless the government changes the program). this means new primes will be more costly to new buyers which should mean they are willing to pay more for used ones. it also means that if you're thinking of buying one, you may want to hurry a bit. *** please do your own research on this; i may not have all the correct facts *** (so far only tesla and GM have reached this milestone; both a few years back, and this is only for USA cars and owners)

    the standard prius media screen is different but also horrible like from 20 years ago lol I'm jealous how cheap it is to drive in the US compared to Europe if you account for the fuel which is a lot more expensive and the cars (around 40k usd for just the standard prius) + tolls are taxed to death it costs like 2-3x more per mile/km, because I would love to afford taking more trips, go camping around the country or just go shopping somewhere far but it's just too expensive here in Portugal, it's not even worth it to get a minimum wage job as far as 30 miles and it's all taxes and if it's not enough they also tax pollution so you get garbage tiny tiny 1.3-1.5l 3 cylinder motors with turbos and a lot of tech to get minimum power but also less consumption and pollution to meet regulations but you also get less durable motors, public transport is also not very developed, so my prius 4 from 2017 only has 40k miles. Keeping cars for more than 20 years here is not unusual because of this (when we can) so It would be expected that most people should drive what's statistically most reliable and cheap to maintain but no far from it, if you look at most sold cars toyota and even honda are far far behind. Besides all this I'm loving the prius until now, things I hate is how low the car is, constantly being careful to not hit anything under and the media and also wish it had a bit bigger fuel tank, and a spare tire, not buying a new car again without one.

      Clearly you've not driven one, at least not on better tires than stock, inflated to a "sporty" pressure as you say, and some juice in the battery. It is actually a wolf in sheep's clothing. Driving the most "Formula 1 type" road I've found in the USA, nothing could stay ahead of me, nothing could catch me. A V6 Accord, clearly lowered/chipped, was so flabbergasted that when I got 1/2 mile ahead of him, I let him catch up so that I could do it to him again. Also blew away a Maxima and a Mustang who were each trying very hard to keep me behind them.
      Admittedly on flat ground, I'd need frequent turns to run with those cars, because the Prime protects its electric motors from overspeed, limiting the car to 104mph indicated. But with massive climbs/descents full of hairpin/switchback turns and fast sweeping turns, it would take something like a Corvette or 911 to outrun my Prime, and it's not clear that I wouldn't be able to make them give up with fading/smoking brakes at least on the descent side. The Prime can keep alternating between 100% full throttle and hard regenerative braking almost indefinitely.
      Look on Google Maps and then Google Earth, at Route 60 in Arizona between Globe and Show Low. There are ascents, descents, and turns of every description, for a long way before, during, and after the bottom of Salt River Canyon. Prius Prime rules!
      On a test drive at the dealer, you are definitely on non-performance tires, the stock inflation pressure is squishy, the car is heavy for what tires they spec, they rarely have the battery charged up, probably have 87 octane in it, probably E10, maybe it has some battery/breakin protection algorithm when brand new, it hasn't done its performance-map "learning" yet, and 100 other things might be working against you. I don't know all of its secret programming, but I do believe it observes and recalibrates itself over time.
      I don't know what it does if you beat on it all the time, maybe it limits some stuff to keep a racer boy from destroying it during warranty. But I do know that after driving it gently most of the time, driving it hard once in a while, and then really unleashing some big demands on it, it does perform way better than you have a right to expect.

    That trunk cargo hiding curtain made out of plastic is crap! That’s worse than my Honda. The non prime Prius has more trunk space 🤔

      All cargo hiding curtains are crap! The first thing I recommend (after buying bigger/better tires) is to take that out and get a big black blanket or photo backdrop that hides stuff better anyway, including when the back seats are folded down (which for me is almost always, I use it as a 2-seater 99% of the time).
