    I’m 44, in decent shape and just started playing. These tips are a huge help. Most videos I’ve watched seem to assume us newer goalies know the metrics of the basics. You did a great job not only explaining how, but why. Thank you!
    Liked and subbed. 👌

    Chris, thank you so much for breaking the butterfly slide into its most simplest form! These two videos are worthy of watching over and over again. Great job!

    Really appreciate you taking the time to help us older goalies trying to learn the newer game.

    I watched both videos, well done. A good explanation for us older beer leaguers who don't get actual goalie coaches to help learn this stuff. So far as driving the knee down, another way to describe it is that you're bringing your thighs together from a wide stance, thus pivoting around the knee, bringing the pads down and the skates up at the same time. "Driving the knees down" makes newer goalies think it's a dropping motion, when it's not. Like you say, start from a wide stance, low with knees bent, then the action of bringing the thighs together FROM that start point naturally brings the knees down and closes the 5-hole. Just a thought. Also, I had a one on one lesson to help me figure out the butterfly push (since I'm 40 and didn't learn young), and the biggest thing that helped me was the weight transfer. The coach showed me that, at first, to really exaggerate how much weight I shift to my PUSH leg, and then transfer. Almost like the motion of I'd be getting up directly into a T push, but keeping the lead leg down. Thanks again, keep up the good work.

      Johnny RC definitely Thanks. Great point on bringing the thighs together I should have mentioned that. I would still say you're driving the knees down as well. Matt Tendler who played for the Hershey Bears, is big on driving the knees down hard, so I tend to agree with his style but to each their own.

      I agree, it is actually driving the knees down. Doing the motion can literally slam the pads down. It's just a terminology thing, explaining it differently can help it click for some that aren't getting it.

    I credit this one video with simplifying so much of my butterfly mechanics.
    Thank you for explaining this so simply and with examples and an encouraging attitude.

    Thanks Chris! Great video! I played in the kick save era of goal tending and I'm struggling to learn butterfly pushes. The tips you give help me better understand the movement.

    Nice video man, this should help starters a lot.
    The only thing I would add is when you do a slide, starting from standing position. The slides are way smoother and can go further if you lower your sliding knee first. It allows your pushing leg to load up at the same time, and the reduced height of your knee gives less impact on the ice. The impact makes you lose a fair amount of distance. It also forces your body to tilt in the direction you're going to go. (meaning energy transfer is easier)

      @thenightrider2325 6 років тому

      samuel gougeon that's great if you can slide from your feet but literally the entire point of this movement is to be able to make a quick recovery from your knees on a rebound. If you're in a situation where you need to use this and you get up to your feet first the puck will be in the back of your net before you have time to even move

    • @bidousam
      @bidousam 6 років тому

      The Night Rider my comment was not about getting up to then slide instead of doing a butterfly slide, it was just to give a tip for when you're already standing (around 12:30)

    • @thenightrider2325
      @thenightrider2325 6 років тому

      samuel gougeon you'd figure most people would be smart enough not to go down first before sliding if they didn't need to

      The Night Rider so what about when you need to? Happens pretty often ;)

    As an old time butterfly goalie, now 62 yrs old, I have been having trouble moving to the push style of play, even though I am super flexible and can do full butterfly extensions. What my mentors missed was that I was keeping the toes of the pads too tight against the toe of the skates. Everytime I would try to push off, my foot blade would come off the ice and I would go nowhere. By tying the toe looser, and switching to Bauer 2S skates, I can now keep my blade on the ice, for a longer, stronger, push.
    If I had to figure it out, I'm sure there are a lot of others with the same issue.

      Interesting. You are referring to toe ties right? Skates prob do matter but my son is in mites and doesn’t use goalie skates. I am guilty of tying them too tight against his boot will try this

    90/90 stretch is what I have been using for my hip rotation. Persoanlly I lean backward onto my back leg rather than forward. Replicates you rotating your leg forwards in butterfly from what I find and stretchs the muscles associated with it.

    Excellent video Chirs. Like yourself I am an older goalie and have been mostly a standup goalie over the years and in trying to learn the butterfly, I have been frustrated over not being able to do these pushes properly. I think you have resolved the problems I was having with your tips. Can you help on another matter ? I can't fix the V opening I get between my pads when I drop down. The V forms from the top of my pads rotating out when I am in the butterfly position. I have tried adjusting my straps, my knee pads, flaring my feet out more, even thought it was due to the bulkiness of my pants pushing out the sides of the pads and nothing has worked. I took my pads off and just laid them flat on the ground and they seem to naturally flare out from the top to form a V between the two top edges. I have Reebok Premier II Pro Leg Pads so they were a pretty decent set back in the day. I picked them up brand new in an end of season sale years ago for half price at around $600 so they weren't cheap pads. Thanks.

    It also helps to have sharp skates so when you load up, you don't blow out your edge when you push.
    I'm a 40-Year goalie still learning.

      Trevor Adrian Spend a large amount of time stretching and becoming more flexible. Will help the most with somebody who is older (No offence, humans ageing biology makes people stiffer as they age from my research and experience. Used to train myself when I was younger as I thought Contortion was cool. Frick stop doing it and moved onto other things. Am regretting stopping as am getting into goalie for the frist time. My middle spilt is fricking tinny compaired to what I could do lol)

      BoostedBadBoy ZX12R Ironically I actually wear these really tight compared to pads I've worn in the past. I found I have better mobility but by not having leather straps I don't get the pinching I would have in the past

      ChrisB10 do you have any pointer stretches to help me reconditioned myself been years since being in net, got in a few nights ago, and got a stage 1 on my PCL in left leg.. hurt like hell. So looking to get my flexibility back. Great video by the way, thank you.

      So you recommend non leather straps? Do you have your toe ties tight against the boot or some gap?

    I've recently started playing ice hockey as a goalie and when I try to butterfly slide I end up spinning in a circle on the ice and looking stupid. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

    • @Spanluver
      @Spanluver 3 роки тому

      Do you have them tightest on bottom and looser as you go up? That’s what I was told from my son’s coaches and videos on YT. We use type with strap and buckles also it’s a soft shell not like G4 or anything.
      My son used to wear player socks and coach recommended to stop. My son also tells me he feels more comfortable and he can do better butterfly’s without them.
