@@Iliketomakestuff Ive seen a fair few barn doors, yours is the first that looks non rustic I have seen, well made. side note, I think people make them rustic because they think barn door then they think 'old man of the prairie' barns and then they think it has to be rustic, or maybe im over thinking it LOL
Adding an LED strip to the top or the bottom of the artwork would be cool. I imagine an office of independently lit artwork doors. Each one would represent that persons office or the specific work space. Awesome project!
Something about this video sparked an idea. It would be really interesting to see a "where are they now"/ builds revisited video. Go through your past projects and show how they're holding up over time, any long term changes you'd make or have made that weren't worth a video.
When I discovered ILTMS I was an anxious, depressed sophomore in college and the time-lapse sections of your videos calmed me down. I binged your whole channel at the time in maybe 2 weeks. Now, as a freelance designer and art director, I really appreciate how far the production has come on this channel, but I also love these occasional self-filmed, tripod, time-lapse videos, feels nostalgic to me. Still your biggest fan either way!
This came out awesome! It's helpful to see someone who makes really cool things very well show struggles with something new to them like Epoxy. Can help with the frustration for others also just trying to figure it all out.
Hi Bob, you inspired me to make my own rolling 'barn door' into our laundry room. For years we battled with opposing doors in the hallway...the rolling door solved that problem. I am not ready to tackle the resin window so I used textured glass. It added a lot of light in an otherwise dark hallway. Thank you for your inspiration!
Great job! I really appreciate how you take us along on your learning experience. While a lot of resin work seems to be experimental, one thing seems to be pretty universal -- running a propane torch lightly over the surface of the pour to pop the air bubbles.
@I Like To Make Stuff if you work with epoxy again a tip I have seen in other videos is using clear packing tape, to pour on to. Also if you ever wanted to smooth out or clear up the surface I have seen them use a very thin light clear epoxy coat. Hope that helps.
I used to work in composites manufacturing. Clear packing tape applied carefully will give you a super smooth surface which is significant for demolding. I would still use mold release on top of that, but in general, the smoother the mold, the better. As for the clear coat, my work never concerned itself with a polished resin look, but most resins will get a sorta foggy layer on the surface when they cure. As I understand, a clearcoat will not. You'd probably want to sand the foggy top layer off before you clearcoat it though.
Absolutely great idea and execution as well. I will say, however, that I was half expecting a more "purple going into pinkish-orange" look like the original scene. And that plexi stencil was pretty amazing as well!
Just commenting to feed your UA-cam algorithm. You are one of my favorite makers. I like your nerdy / geeky Star Wars stuff (because I can relate; I'm not being critical!) Keep up the great work.
Great project, it looks awesome. Maybe in the future when you decide to change things up a little, you could do another collaboration with Evan and Katelyn. Like the ping-pong table you three made together a couple of years ago. I'm sure you are aware that Evan and Katelyn do tons of art related Resin Epoxy builds. From fake-marble bedside tables to galaxy themed keyboard keys. They have done a lot with resin. So they have tons of experience to make version 2 of this door near perfect. As a bonus you can maybe also help them with something so there is a colab video on both of your channels. Great for sharing some of the newer audiences of either channel. Aside from that suggestion, I just wanted to say that for someone who says that they are not fully comfortable when working with epoxy for art, you sure did take all the necessary steps to ensure it was successful. Making a properly sealed mold, leveling the mold, using mold release and weighing down the acrylic. Those were all essential as far as I know. That clearly shows a high level of knowledge and maker experience to do something kinda new and doing it well. Just one of the many reasons I love watching your video's. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what you make next.
Yeah, I was wondering why you went with those colours instead of reds, oranges, and yellow 🤔 I also thought about using clear right at the top, so it was more of a blue or deep orange getting lighter til it was clear at the top. 🤷♀️ but you never know what you’re going to prefer til you try it, so good job!
13:40 Bob... why did you just consider a collab with Evan and Kaitlyn? They are very familiar with resin and would have done some awesome work to help with the barn door project.
You should really do a collab with Evan and Katelyn for the next art for this door! They do amazing things with resin and you can learn a lot from them
Really cool guys. I enjoyed this one. It's definitely art man. I saw the clock you made some years back. It's cool to see some of those little Easter eggs.
Another way to cut Perspex without chipping and a standard blade is to sandwich between two sheets of wood and make the cut, drastically reduces the chipping and breakout. Great video, really enjoy all the videos on this channel! :oD
Nice project, very cool idea and you pulled it off. My first thought when you added the color was "more color", sadly you couldn't hear me in the past cuz that's when it was needed. Thin resin pours, from my very limited experience, need a lot of color to attain the depth of opacity desired. All this is moot as you have discovered that as I did. On the next one, try some mica powder colors, they tend to have a different way of blending and light refraction.
You should have Evan and Kaitlyn make you some resin art for your door. They've gotten pretty good. Colab? Have them teach you how to be a resin pro like them. 😋
its a little similar to a project im working on. i went with a silhouette of a lighthouse on a cliff. the silhouette has a little shading with some deep purple tones but what i really like is the light that the lighthouse shines, i put some diochromic plastic which gives the shining light an almost fairy like twist which contrasts great with the dark and mysteriuos silhouette. although i ran out of resin and im broke so yea tis on hold
Ive been watching since near the begining, and I have to say, you are coming a long way Bob, when I first saw the image I was thinking, "Is that Lars moisture farm?" then I thought of course it is, this is Bob from ILTMS and hes a big star wars nerd (no judging, Im a Trekkie and I like SW too) I have to say the Dual sun set imo was an excellent choice and as far as the resin goes, dont sweat the details, resin is a PITA
The best part of these videos is "So - yeah. Could've done that differently. Don't do that." My entire career is based on making mistakes so others don't (make the same ones). Keep it up. (And MicroCenter is the new Radio Shack, but with fewer discrete components. It's awesome.)
Just wondering: why didn't you 'polish' the epoxy panel? I think it would add to the glass effect if you did. Very nice project and gave me an idea for our place. Great job!
I used to work in the sign industry and used a LOT of Acrylic and Polycarbonate. To get a clean finish as opposed to a safe finish, lower your blade so the teeth of it are.............how to say this, pushing into the plastic rather than the safe way where they are slamming down onto the plastic. So the blade tips are only just poking their heads above the plastic. Your multi tooth blade used to cut aluminium was also a great choice. The safe cut is to have the teeth pushing the plastic down onto your table and not pushing against the plastic like I suggested, so exercise extreme caution lowering your blade!!
That art turned out really rad! I wonder what a framed version that's edge lit with LEDs would look like. Also...a lot of builds coming soon that have electronics in them you say? Yes please!
Bob, please accept my apology. That was a poor choice of words. Your videos are amazing and your expert explanations are always on point. You speak/explain with your hands and I do too. I can’t communicate any other way! It was fun and affirming to see someone else doing that too. Keep up the great work!
Bob this is a really cool design. Great video as always. Can't wait to see more videos soon Bob. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. God bless.
I like the way you build every piece of art. I have seen you use wood quite often ,so it is my request if possible use more and more recycled materials like wood ,so it doesn't effect the environment much and also it reduces cost. Once again thank you for such a nice art
This half lap construction method for a slab door just saved me a good chunk of change! I put a pocket door system in our master bath that needs to be 28” wide but it’s very hard to find exactly what we want without breaking the bank. Time to build it myself. Thank you!!
By the way, the WordPress podcast setup on your website was the original inspiration for one of my video tutorials, except my design skills aren’t at your level. I’m still learning after all these years of being a developer!
one thing you could try to get the resin out of the mold is once you get a corner up use some fishing line or floss to slide between the resin and the mold. that way you won't have to worry about scratching it or cracking it
When I saw the title I was amused because I have just finished installing a double barn door but once you started yours mine started to seem plain. 😅 Ah well time to add sprucing up the Barn doors of my game room to my future to do list.
I like the way it turned out. Bob, I need to know where you got the red t-shirt though. I can figure out a good search term "Rebel heat diffusion plating t-shirt" -nothing. Actually can we just get a list of your t-shirt sources, they are always great.
When dark behind the resin it looks closer to what you were I I got for. Would a transparent window tint film help you get that color. I love that idea.
This is a trend setting concept, watch this is gonna be something people start to do to their barn doors!!! love it!
That'd be cool. I just didn't think barn doors didn't have to be rustic looking.

Oh heck yeah! COLLAB! 😂
Resin time, resin time, do, do, do, do, resin time

He did remember to use mold release AND level it. But yes they could have helped with the artistic part

I was looking for this comment 😆 you guys never disappoint!
The whole time I was hoping he would call you guys for advice.
I didn't know whether to be looking for this comment or not 🤣
I love how he’s improvising, it turned out amazing too
Love your Star Wars projects!!!
NGL I rolled my eyes at “barn door” in the title but stuck around after I saw the thumbnail closer. Nice work, Bob!

Positive Couple has some awesome epoxy art projects. Takes an insane lot of sanding and polishing to get it clear!

Really loving how noone noticed that everyone else from the crew is on vacations but Bob still managed to make the video have movement.
Honestly that’s the neatest idea! My brother loves Star Wars, Mandalorian, etc. but most of all the maple door is stunning

for a new insert, you could go full van gogh swirls on a different star wars landscape, it would look amazing

hi, you can use a tooth cleaning thread (the waxed ones) in order to remove the panel from the mold.
