I read somewhere that this bass line is difficult to play, but if that's all you do in the song, its doable. The thrust of the article was a tribute to McCartney for being the bassist in this song, plus the front man and the lead singer. A singularly nearly impossible task (which McCartney proceeds to pull off seemingly effortlessly)
Barry Kaufman Playing the bass on this song isn't really all that hard. Playing the bass and singing this song at the same time is another story entirely. I've seen Paul do it live and it's mind-boggling to me how smoothly he can sing while playing such a punchy bass line.
When you're boning up on your Paul McCartney love songs it means only one thing: Lackanookie! I've taught for years; you're the best. Many can play, few can teach. You've got it. Take a bow. Make a little dough. You deserve it.
McCartney elevated bass playing probably more than any other musician in history. His bass counterpoint is truly amazing, I've studied it and am complete awe. Hey James, will you consider doing Magneto and Titanium Man?
JJ, have you seen "Two Of Us" the TV movie? This song is the core of all the arguments in that. It was such a surprisingly good movie. It's available on UA-cam now.
I've always wondered if Paul came up with the bass line first and then wrote the song around it, the other way around, or if he got it all at one time. Anybody ever heard anything about that?
James James Of course he wrote it on the piano. There's a demo on 2014 re-relase of Speed of Sound album to prove it :) Btw bass line on this song is so sick, Paul was really a genius on that instrument. He was during the 60s on bass like Hendrix or Clapton on guitar :)
Jesse Pinkman - Agreed. Paul is an overall outstanding musician. I bet he was already good on piano a half hour after he started playing. As for Silly Love Songs, try playing that bass and singing at the same time - not easy......
I always felt like Paul made up his bass lines as he went. A lot of times he doesn't play the exact same thing twice. Of course, he's always in key. But the bass line here is a lot like the stuff he did on "Sgt. Pepper." I honestly think the stuff just flows out of him sometimes. Terribly underrated bass player.
This song let's the bass lead with the guitar supporting the more repetitive space we usually hear the bass line of a song occupy. This is cuz the recording of the sonf had no guitar. The touring guitarist made one to play live. So he was kinda sneakin' himself in.
One of my favorite Wings songs. Great simple funky rhythm, but McCartney's bass really sticks out on this one, one of my favorite bass lines.

Thats kind of what I meant. I dont play but the author said it was challenging. If it isnt, it isnt.
0:56 you got it!!!
Wonderful - THE song of the summer of 76.
Q: When did Paul McCartney do Silly Love Songs?
A: 1963 to date. :)
Joey Bologny To quote the man himself: What's wrong with that?

I've always wondered if Paul came up with the bass line first and then wrote the song around it, the other way around, or if he got it all at one time. Anybody ever heard anything about that?
EclecticHillbilly Well, it's in the key of C, which is more of a piano/keyboard key than a guitar/bass key. So I'm guessing he wrote it on the piano.
