Nintendo doesn't give a single shit about bootleg Game Boy games, they barely give a fuck about the QC of their controllers for their latest console. Also if we were to do everything as the law says, we would be fucked over tremendously. I'm not going to get too political, but there's a lot of bullshit happening, a lot of injustice that the law protects, copyright being one of them. You're not going to get arrested or go to hell or anything if you download a couple Pokémon roms or buy a bootleg cartridge of AliExpress, and you really shouldn't.

    What I want to know is why these multi carts don't simply have every Game Boy game ever made on them.
    They are clearly not bothered about copyright laws, and the entire library for the original Game Boy is less than 200MB.
    They wouldn't be able to make them fast enough to keep up with the demand.

    The battery in the cartridge doesn't have to be an indicator that a game can keep saves. Many GBA cartridges no longer use SRAM to save, instead they use Flash Rom or EEPROM, which doesn't require a continuous current. Third generation pokemon games have a battery in them to keep the internal clock running, whilst being able to keep saves without it.

      One thing about all of the pokemon games on that cart is that they're actually *all* NES roms rather than gameboy ones. The other ones are likely similar romhacks, made to capitalise on the popularity of pokemon.
      I actually got slightly mixed up. This one, Pocket Monster, is a romhack... sort of. Nobody knows for sure where it came from, but almost all of the graphics/sounds/etc are ripped off from other games. Someone then went on to make a romack of THIS game called panda world, featuring pandas as you may expect. There's also one based on the teletubbies... and people have taken the soundtracks and sprites to use in *other* games.
      It's a real mess of knockoff nonsense!
      Bonus tip: someone forgot to turn off debug mode. You can still move around when paused, and hitting select resets the level!

    Well you can usually finagle the cart into connecting properly if you pop it in & out a lot. Unfortunately that's the chance you take with bootleg carts, but they usually are not defective. I just wanted to make a correction, most GBA games don't need a battery to keep saves but time. They got an RTC (Real Time Clock) chip so games like Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire can keep track of time for timed events like growing berries. If the battery runs dry you can still save but those timed events won't work and you'll have to change the battery. Very nice video though!

  • @joemck85
    @joemck85 3 роки тому

    When Pokemon Emerald announces "The game can be played" after you hit A on the title screen, that means the cartridge doesn't have an RTC chip. The message is supposed to appear when the cartridge battery is dead and it's supposed to say the battery has run dry and that the game can be played but time-based events like tides or berries growing won't happen anymore -- saving is on a flash chip on real carts so that still works. Pirates couldn't figure out a way to fully remove the message, so instead they changed the message to simply say "The game can be played".
    Both Pokemon Gold and Silver on there are NES romhacks. I've seen an actual fanmade Pokemon Gold on NES, but these are just hacks of random platformers. I hadn't seen the Silver one before, but the Gold one is usually titled Pocket Monster or occasionally Pika Chu. Its first level, VELBT, is supposed to be titled VELDT, which is an alternate spelling of veld, a lesser known word for a kind of grassland. Pikachu works like Mario: he can defeat most enemies by jumping on them. He can also pick up batteries which charge up an electric attack that kills all enemies on the screen, including ones that cannot be killed by jumping. OK concept, mediocre game.
    As for Trip World, I was practically screaming BLOW ON IT. Yeah, yeah, it's not supposed to work, but it's done it every time for me. I reinsert it a few times, isopropyl, proper cleaning kits for both cartridge and console, pricy contact cleaner sprays, take it apart to scrape any oxide off the contacts, no luck. Finally give it a quick blow and it runs perfectly. Alternately, they might have made the circuit board a bit too thin. Sticking a piece of paper behind the board can help with these cheapo unlicensed carts.

      @chamoo232 I have both, the Everdrive really is a little better (bit faster, nicer menus, extra option(s), build quality, replaceable battery) but the main difference is the power they draw, the Omega will use about 40-50% more battery than a regular cart, the Everdrive uses only 15-20% more (depends on the game). The one that's 5 minutes in is Little Nemo with a Pikachu sprite hack. I had another game I downloaded just like that. I was trying to download Pokémon Yellow and instead got a hacked game with the same name. It was a damn good game tho.. it was a Felix the Cat game but with (again) Pikachu was the main sprite. It was kinda cute. Pikachu would get powerups, 1st power up was like a punching glove gun.. 2nd Car that shot out honking noises 3rd was an airplane 4th was a PikaTANK.. I thought it was super fun.

    That game named pokemon gold on NES, it has a cheat on it. If you press start, you can make the character freeze but you can still move it through the entire stage and additionally, if you press starz and then press select, you can move to the next level instantly. I beat this game with by using this cheat.

    I have the 369 in 1 GBA "no repeat" which is a right fib cos several games are repeated but under different names, cost about a tenner and I got it for my original DS and works brilliantly too, no laggies or fasties, good sound and display and just the ticket as I let my daughters use it when visiting or travelling. Only nause being it only runs on one screen as its in GBA mode but I got told the DS game card of the same sort also only uses one screen. The DS saved my daughter's sanity when she was working over in Sark at the big hotel there, not much to do so 369 games did help her while the quiet evenings away :D

    I had a lot of these cartridges since it was actually hard to find an original GBA game where I come from, haha. One even had the complete Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and a Kirby game complete with more than 100 Gameboy titles. Good times

      @Pink Kirlia It was a GBA cartridge, usually comes in the color black and has bootleg 12x in 1 label in front. DS Cartridges are usually the homebrew ones like R4 or EDGE

    Hey Eliot, not sure if you already know this or not but I'll tell you anyway.
    The Pokemon games released for the Game Boy Advance actually don't rely on the battery to save the game, the battery is only used for the in-game clock, which is only needed for picking and planting berries. If I'm not mistaken, the game actually uses a chip on the board to save the actual file for the game. Just felt like letting you know!

    1. It's essentially a flash cart
    2. Because of the terrible quality these types of carts can DAMAGE your handhelds.
    3. They will last for a very short time, the cheap plastic can even in some rare cases discolor your handhelds or carrying cases!

    Just an important heads-up about any of those aftermarket/pirated/multi-cart games: most of them are made on the cheap with 3.3v parts, which isn't a problem at all on the GBA since that one uses 3.3v for it's power and signal to the cartridge, but when you go into GB/GBC mode, the console works with 5v on the cartridge (and so do the original older consoles of course). This now is a problem for the console tho, since the way they deal with that 5v to 3.3v difference might not be ideal at all, and might just overload the data pins on the console. Sometimes they might (will) glitch a lot more, and sometimes it can even damage the console over time. It's definitely not a great option to use always. That also is true for other retro consoles like the Master System, NES/Famicon Game Gear and some others too.
    Flash carts tho, are usually a different story (but, crappier ones might be made without the proper level translators and such).
    Also: no I'm not the one that sent the carts!

  • @leabriana1223
    @leabriana1223 Рік тому

    I really love some of these carts. There's some of the funniest games on them. I don't mind some of the repro-carts. I can't say I'd suggest someone buy one if you are trying play something like pokemon and have a reliable save file but it's nice when you want to play a game which costs over $500 for a cart. (looking at you, Shantae) I have a flash cart but having an individual cart for a game just feels special.
