    sorry for my long comment!
this is the first ever opera cross over! so glad they had the chance to do this, she was a top soprano and explained how disciplined it was...but said he taught her how to really enjoy the music and sing in a way she hadn't before.
he did this with Mike Moran who he met in 86 when he did time and in my defence for David Clarke who was the writer and main composer with mike who explained when he went to meet and record with Freddie he had an accident and hurt his wrists but told them not to tell him,but Freddie wanted changes made so was telling him to run through it,change it, make it faster..wanted a long run at the end..eventually he was really struggling to play the piano and someone told Freddie who replied oh get her a pill and a vodka she'll be fine!
Freddie had been given a huge advancement in 83 to do two solo albums, the first was released in 85 and he started his second in 87. at the end of the 86 tour he said he was done with touring, he wanted a brake from the band and was doing his solo but if after an agreed brake if they all really wanted to carry on recording as Queen he would so long as they also agreed to changes which they did and recorded the miracle in 88
during that time mike agreed to do the album with him, Freddie said to him we worked so well together would you like to do an album with me , YES! but first Freddie wanted to do a one off cover of the Great Pretender which they did Jan 87 released Feb and went to no 4. mike said Freddie forgot he need a B side so told mike to play something classical and he would improve which was excersises in free love thinking it would be funny to pretend to be a soprano.
they had started the solo and Brian had played guitar on one of the tracks which later became a Queen track.
when Montserrat got in touch wanting to meet him,she had been told that the previous year on tour Freddie had said she had the most beautiful voice he ever heard
he took mike (and others) to barcalona with him to meet her as well as Beach their lawyer/manager they decided to perform EI F L as an ice braker but he got nervous and blurted out I have something for you she took this as it was a gift to her, listened said she liked it very much and told mike to have all the music written down for her when she came back in a few hours she would perform it at covent garden in 3 weeks and mike would play piano!
as a surprise to Freddie she had written lyrics for it, she went back to his and stayed there until 6am! to her amusement the press were outside when she left! there's a tape recording of him telling her she needs to go home and she was upset thinking he didn't want her there but he was just concerned for her
they spent the night as mike put it warbling away to everything and anything just having fun
she said in an interview she knew he had conquered her!
he agreed to dwritting s song for them but concentrated on his solo but she kept ringing so as they met inBarcalona he wrote Barcalona! but by the time they got to record it he had found out he haad AIDS so when they met up again she went to kiss him and he didnt let her she then went to kiss him and he said no, at that time people were scared you could get aids by sharing drinks,kiss...she was upset and thought she had offended him in some way so he told her but she didn't full y accept it,he didn't tell the band until a couple of years later, he didn't tell his family only telling his sister he was terminal in August 1990 when she asked about his foot but gave no explaination what was wrong with him
Montserrat didn't tell anyone, her brother was involved with the 1992 olympics and Barcalona was chosen as the olympic song and she was so excited about performing it with him he then had to tell her bluntly he wouldn't be here, that must have been so difficult
he ended up putting his solo to one side and doing an album with her but she didnt have much time to work on it and they had never wrote for an opera singer, mike said they just learnt as they went along but it was difficult and Freddie had to send her demos with him singing Baratone and her parts in falsetto and wait for feed back...they had wrote music for two tracks and had a vague theme and structure but were struggling with lyrics so he asked Tim rice to help out which he did
Golden Boy which is very typically Freddie every genre in the mix!
when you see Freddie hold and kiss her hand no one would think anything of it but considering the situation it meant a lot
obviously Freddie wasn't here for the olympics but apparently she still performed it with his recording
they had a great love and respect for each other

      Freddie first solo.
Started in 83 but he was fitting it in around Queen.
Put it to one side to record the works then the tour.
He finished it off when they weren't touring America and it was released 85 during the tour with no real promotion no 6 uk

Freddie wrote a whole album for Montserrat. He was thrilled to get to sing one song with her, but she said "How many songs on a rock album? And he replied "ten". She then said "Write ten songs." This became the album titled Barcelona. All beautiful songs. One is all in Spanish, one is half in Japanese. I hope you react to them all.

Montserrat Caballe was considered the best. Soprano of the latter half of the 20th C. They loved each other deeply. He wrote this song for her for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. But it’s more like a hymn to her. He said that he loved music and that she WAS the music. There is a lovely interview where she reminisces about Freddie and how groundbreaking this ‘marriage’ of rock and opera with Freddie’s lyrics and their voices was. She knew the measure of the man! And if you look closely it is beautifully captured in their musical interaction - unabashed veneration. The Golden Boy is a good one too.

When they sing together in perfect harmony, it's bliss! Freddie's vocal control and accuracy was incredible, or else he would not have been able to perform/record with the top operatic soprano coloratura of the time. They became very close friends; she was one of the few people who knew about his AIDS diagnosis; and yes it's very worthwhile to watch a short documentary about the collaboration and friendship between the two of them. That said, it wasn't a competition; he was not an opera singer, nor would he have claimed that he was singing this song with the technique of an opera singer, which is a highly specialized form. He did, however, love opera and he attended performances of classical opera on his own time. Some of Queen's songs have themes and even a few bars drawn directly from famous operas (I think only songs written by Freddie but I'm not certain). I'm sure if he had wanted to pursue it he could have gone in for that training. He was indeed a unique and complex person, and his voice had a richness, depth, timbre, that made it beautiful beyond factors like range and strength.

When others asked if she would do this again she said essentially this was so special she could not imagine it happening again.

Great reaction, Rory. Thanks! Freddie and Mike Moran (the dude conducting) wrote the song. I feel the same as you about opera. Were it not for Freddie, I would not be watching and enjoying, although I do have a huge appreciation for Montserrat's vocal abilities. She is truly talented. Her ability to sing softly in the upper register is magnificent and takes a great deal of skill. I don't think I've ever heard anyone sing like her. The two of them make an excellent pair. While Freddie's talent allows him to sing well with her, his real gift is the bond that he has when interacting with the audience. He would not have had the ability to polish that with the opera crowd if he stayed within that genre. It's an entirely different kind of crowd. He also would not have had the flexibility that he maintained as a rock star. It is truly remarkable what he was able to accomplish and share with his fans. The mutual respect, love, and admiration is something that will last forever.

Freddie and his friend Mike Moran have composed a whole duet album. She really loved Freddie's ideas and they became good friends, too. This was the first crossover between a rock star and an opera diva in the history.

According to Brian May, in the beginning Freddie was just an ok singer. He would prance about on stage and pose, but his vocals were not very developed yet. Freddie heard himself recorded and said," that will not do at all" and Brian said he worked very hard to develop the voice that made him famous. He is a self made man.
