I said it before and I'll say it again. If Toro came out in the 60s. He would be diamond selling! regardless. I don't care about sales, he's my favourite musician of all time!
great fucking host dude seems so passionate about toro's music. also listening to chaz talking about ANYTHING it's always interesting. mahal is on constantly repeat this year for me ❤️
Host was clearly a huge fan and was even dropping mentions to Chillwave in 2010; I was right there with him. First loved Toro's "Minors". "Rose Quartz", "New Beat" and his remix of Tyler The Creator's "French" are also slaps.
idk about all that. he very strangely asked if MAHAL was “real instruments” or samples early in the interview. it’s a jam album. would take anyone 15 seconds to figure out that it wasn’t samples.
The amount of muted tracks was impressive! And hearing why they were muted was interesting... so much re-recording! Everyone works differently, but it's a good argument for keeping the songwriting and mixing/polishing as separate tasks. It's so tempting to get picky about that bass sound before you even finish the song... then at the end of the day, you have a nice sounding bass line on a song you're tired of listening to that doesn't have any other parts. Amazing interview - I've loved his music for a while, but had never heard him talk... glad he seems like a nice dude - makes me like the music even more!
What's so good/unique to Reason compared to other DAWs? I haven't tried using it in years and have mainly used Logic and Ableton (and a tiny bit of Bitwig which seems kind of a cross between Ableton and more traditional DAWs like Cubase/Logic). Just wondering what's good about Reason? I kind of remember it was frustrating as it didn't seem to work in the same ways as the other DAWs, but I did last use it about 8-10 years ago so I've no idea what's it like now. Can you use Kontakt and other plugins like that or are you limited to what's in Reason?
Thank you for this. I have really enjoyed it. I know NO ONE else that uses reason besides myself. I love getting different perspectives and angles for fellow producers. Thanks again!
Dont laugh but I didnt know who this was. He is thoughtful, very open with the process, humble, articulate and such a lovely presentation. Seriously will but his music and as always, Ryan is knowledgeable, insightful, great interviewer, a fan, truly interested in the back n forth convo. Thank you for such a wonderful peek on how he goes through his thoughts, reasons and steps of creation. Amazing….
Ryan, thanks to you and the team for introducing the public to this gem of an artist and producer. I’m definitely digging Chaz’s artistry and looking to check out more of his works. I especially like the upfront lead vocal on the first song, it makes the track for me. And the female vocal on the second track is bannanaz sweeeeet. Nice drop.
I LOVE this one guys! So much good info in here and the entire conversation was inspiring for us Reason users. Especially for those of us using it as our primary DAW. You guys rock
Definitely: I am “Team Ryan”. Your videos are always amazing( live, tutorials, tips, whatever). A huge thank you and, if this is the premier for the Reason season 2022-2023, you really started with 🔥🤩
I’m half way through this, cannot express how grateful i am for this interview, incredibly insightful, passionate interviewer who is also a good listener and knows the right questions to ask. I was already a fan of Chaz but this gave me new appreciation for what he does and his process. Thank you both ❤ I have dabbled with Reason but will definitely be revisiting it again after this, I really liked those iPad apps (figure) that you guys made many years ago, when i was learning computer music stuff as a young teen that and GarageBand on iPad were by far some of the most intuitive and easy to use tools to quickly put something together.
Embarrassingly, I'd never heard of Toro Y Moi. Guess I'm in my own bubble of what I "normally" listen to. Buuuuuut, I'm a new fan now. Firstly on the basis that Chaz sounds like such a nice, genuine and sound guy. Then I start hearing some of his productions, and I'm feeling like I could have his music in my collection. Bandcamp page found. New fan right here. Wonderful interview!
Great interview. One of the best bands Toro y Moi. Also Crumb, Remi Wolf, Skinshape, Tommy Guerrero, Gardens & Villa, Generationals, Body Language, Soft White Sixties. Dig it.
@10 minutes, a good way to divorce yourself from the bar markers in reason is to set your project at a ridiculously high BPM, but record at a normal tempo, and then arrange everything from there with snap turned off. You can still line things up, but the bar markers will be so tiny that it will help you to ignore them on the sequencer while you're moving stuff around.
I actually will put the BPM very low sticking to tempo making a hour long jam do all the automation and then put it to a normal tempo because some things are next to impossible to do at normal speed.
@@HOLLASOUNDS ….. 🤯 Duuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh 😐 I hate when something was simple but took 15 years for some dude on UA-cam to hit you in the face with it… 😭😂 🤜🏾
Great interview w Chaz/Toro - he's a hugely talented, down-to-earth dude and you can tell he loves every aspect of creating music. Glad he has stuck w Reason. I noticed he mentioned Todd Rundgren as a major influence. Todd has been a hardcore Reason user for at least the last 15 years - both for recording and live shows. How about an interview w him !!
duuuuuude that midi thing from having to start in the beginning was such a throwback! I had to do that for a remix competition back in the day. It was a 5 minute drum loop on midi. Such a pain.. I got first place though!!
Reason now has alot of stuff but from 1 to 4 it felt like actually using physical gear, and sounds like it, there was limitations similar to real gear. I listen back to My early Reason music and it sounds like the currently popular Dawlass set up. When I first see some one using Reason 2, I instantly needed it.
So cool to see someone discussing Reason in way similar to how understand it. That's not to say i don't enjoy Reason being discussed in a way that seems foreign to me. I think i need to get more involved in the Reason community. Thank you for the great shares.
I feel anyone who uses Cubase Reason or Reaper understand the dismissing by the mainstream normies. I went from FL -> Ableton -> Cubase. I learned so much from trying different DAWs!

15:45 So happy I'm not the only insane person. I used to play along with Reason as a backing track, then import my recorded audio into NN19. I ran into the same issue of not being able to hear the track unless I started the song over. This lead to my earliest experiments in bending Reason to my will, which gave me confidence to try other ideas. My solution was to split the audio into measures, map each up the keyboard and trigger them in sequence, which was super time-consuming but very rewarding to figure out. I think I remember that NN-XT does this automatically and I was so happy when it was added to the rack.

I'm curious why "Why I don't use splice" was in the thumbnail as if it was a quote from Chaz, but splice is not mentioned once in the interview lol. It would have been interesting to hear Chaz's take on sample libraries in general. I'm sure he avails himself of the latest tools!
