Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see and survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish, or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My father is a kind, soft spoken man. I was shocked while hunting with him in my early 20s when he nailed a buck running from 220 yards with a 3030 Marlin (Side eject with an old Weaver TV scope). I watched it through my scope, and he ratcheted that 3030 lever action like John Wayne. It was a moment that I will never forget. Coincidentally, I killed my first buck almost 30 years ago to this day with that same gun.
AWSOME
Awesome story
These are the kind of hunting/shooting stories I can’t get enough of!
Dulces recuerdos de tu padre.
Love marlin levers. Love the side eject. Have a 30 30 and a 45 70 guide gun
I have a 1894 44magnum that my grandpa carried on his horse for years that he gave to me for my birthday when I was younger and I love how handy it is in the woods
44 mag came out in 1955 I think
Only problem is that a plastic rifle will never be as sexy as a lever action.
Sexy is in the eye of the beholder. The younger shooters especially see ARs as sexy. At 65+, I like a good bolt gun or my dream gun 1886 Winchester.
@@fredbecker607 Younger shooters wear skinny jeans. We had bell bottoms. They were so much better.
@@crazydaveiz bell bottoms are just skinny jeans with room for your high heels 😂
Imagine an AR but with the same quality of appearance as an ole Winchester? Parallel universe kinda stuff…
Only thing plastic on mine is my grips.
There are MANY cartridges better than 30-30 but it is enough for what you need, no matter what you’re hunting in NA. It will take whatever you’re aiming at. That’s why it’s been so popular for so long.
I’ve never shot a gun but the way this man speaks makes it so interesting to listen
You should!
You should. If you are mentally stable.
I'm sure you know someone who would be willing to teach you how to safely use one, ask around, most "gun guys and gals" like to bring new people into the sport.
The opportunities for you to shoot are definitely out there. It is within your reach.
A 30-30 lever action is one of the best bush guns I've ever owned. I've taken several deer as well as boar with it. It is my go to especially for thick brush stalking.
Lol what have you owned?
My M1A Tanker in .308 with a 16.25" barrels is perfect for woods! Keep up the GREAT work good sir! 👍👍
That’s a great choice. Been meaning to pick one up but they spendy.
@@hateferlife Yes they are! Price was pushing $2,000 after taxes. But I tell you what, that muzzle break works GREAT! It mitigates recoil VERY WELL!!
@@ryanmoeller3308 why would you need a muzzle brake on a 308? It has very minimal recoil already, especially in a a 9 pound rifle. My daughter was shooting a model 70 featherweight in 308 at like 9 years old I guess us old people were just tougher back then
My customized M1A has been rechambered in 6.8mm. Which is my go to rifle for Dall Sheep and Caribou, just what you need when you need to reach out to 5 or 6 hundred yards. It will always drop a Caribou with one shot. As for those pesky Dall Sheep. Almost always an uphill shot of 45 to 60 degrees. And you want to knock them down where they stand or they might fall for several hundred yards. Which you really dont Want that to happen, kinda really messes up your meat as well as tearing up your hide and possibly breaking your rack.
@@E3fieldservices7144 It came with the Muzzle Break. I'm pretty sure all M1A's come with a form of a muzzle break factory installed
Love the 30-30, also have a 32 special which is my favorite dear rifle in the woods in Wisconsin.
I have three 30/30s and my Dads 32 Special. Love em all. Don't need no stinkin' 300.
Every rifle needs a sling. You never know when you'll need to use both hand and in a place you can't put it down.
Agreed 💯
That has always been my thinking
Good point I had not thought off, I mean even if say your hunting boar and you run out of your 20 round mag, having a sling where you can easily draw your sidearm while not dropping your rifle would be quite handy.
good point
I love my own level action 30-30. It is perfect for hunting in the woods.
I don’t blame you
Meh, every lever ive seen jammed. My bolt never does
you have a LEVEL action...SWEET
To me around my area 30/30 is a great choice for the woods that I live in.!!!
Might be… ever tried anything else?
.22 cal has killed more deer than anything. Shot placement is and always has been the key.
@@chriswelch9070 at very close range yes.
@@Ron-Swanson yes a 7 rem mag
@@Razorback30001 long range and short range, pretty good combo.
Adding a red dot is a nice replacement for that 300 blk for the old school iron sights found on the 30-30. Fast target acquisition and no need for heavy scopes in the dense woods.
Yeah I’m contemplating putting one on my 30-30 over peep sights
Aimpoint originally sold red dot sights to hunters, military picked them up afterwards.
Using a red dot in dense woods is exactly what the red door was intended for.
Ron, you really stirred up the wasps nest on this one!! Lololol 😆😆😆!!!
Here in Southern Arizona, my best friends and I used to hunt the thickest mesquite bosques there were along the border 40 years ago with 1894 Winchester and Marlin saddle carbines in 30-30, 32, 38-40, 38-55, and .44mag. Yes, short, fast and never tangled up in the brush as well as busting through the thickest brush.
As the AR platform "developed" and came the flattop AR's in 5.56 with free floated 24" barrels we would use them for Coyotes with hand made 5 round magazines. 3 or 4 of us would lay out early/late on a high wash bank and get after them 'Yotes! Took a lot of coyotes that way and the platform was accurate!
I, ("we"), would hand load for specific game to make sure I was hitting to the point of aim with any of my calibers, 5.56, 270Win, 30-30, 7.62, .30-06', 7mm Mag, .44mag.
300BLO, is an excellent round, and it has slightly better ballistics than 30-30, but, IMHO, it's six of one and a half dozen of the other. Lol!!
Besides, I have hunted thick stuff with an old S&W M29, stainless 8 1/2" and a 3x scope for for maybe 30 years. My best friend still uses an old Ruger Redhawk in .30Carb with a 4x!
But what the Hey!, I'll pull out one of the "clones" (M4), hit the range and work on a heavy, hard hitting hunting load, find the ancient 5 rounders and hit what's left of the bosques up north....... Might even be "Sexy" to carry around and get game! Sorry, lol, being a little sardonic!
I agree with you, 16" barrels are easily handled. It's why we carried levers in saddle carbines and "short rifles"!!
Very cool Ron!
Ron, keep in mind that the .300 Blackout is highly efficient in short barrels. A 9” barrel achieves a full powder burn; any length beyond that experiences the principle of diminishing returns. If you don’t mind a tax stamp (or two), you can have a ~7lb suppressed deer rifle with an effective barrel length of
Take the stock off and replace it with a brace and there is no need for a tax stamp. I have a 300 blackout with an 18" Wilson Combat match grade barrel and is a bit more accurate.
@@johns1834 braces are nice, but the legality of swapping a stock for a brace depends on the ATF’s mood each week. The ATF have also made it clear that a firearm that begins as a rifle cannot ever become a pistol - just a “firearm derived from a rifle”. Oddly enough, a pistol can become a rifle and be returned to pistol form. I opted to just Form 1 the SBR to avoid the headache. My .300 BO already has one stamp for the can, I might as well add another.
Keep in mind that a longer barrel isn’t inherently more accurate as long as your barrel properly stabilized the bullet. It could increase effective accuracy by increasing the sight radius, but when held in a Ransom Rest in a controlled environment, both barrels should have comparable accuracy. However, the longer barrel does increase velocity (to a point) which mitigates the impact of wind and drop. For me, the additional 15% or so increase in velocity isn’t worth the extra barrel length.
@@Steve-bf1uy I like longer barrels. Just my preference, so no need for a SBR and the headache of tax stamps. I had an upper with a short barrel, but just didn't like it and traded it for something else. Also had a Ruger America Ranch bolt action in 300 Blackout (in anticipation of ARs being outlawed), but hated it. Too many misfires and light primer strikes and the action wasn't very smooth. I just really enjoy using the AR style rifle. The only thing I don't like about the 300 Blackout, especially in an AR, is using pistol grade powder which is dirty.
@@johns1834 good to know on the Ruger - I was contemplating buying one. If you don’t mind the minor inconvenience longer barrel, it can definitely help by giving your rounds a little more energy.
@@johns1834 good to know on the Ruger - I was contemplating buying one. If you don’t mind the minor inconvenience longer barrel, it can definitely help by giving your rounds a little more energy.
I was just looking at my dad's 30-30 and 32 special they must be at least 90 years old
It may be a good match up, but I'll stay with my 30/30
SKS works great anywhere. Feeds HP, SP, FMJ and anything else you can reload with never a problem!
Plus it has ammo available all around the world.
Thanks Ron, but I’ll keep my lever gun.
EXACTLY
If you swing that rifle, you put the rifle over your left shoulder if your right handed with the muzzle pointing down and the rifle behind your shoulder. That way you can grab the forearm with your left hand you can drop the sling off of your left shoulder as you bring it up and mount the rifle up All In One motion. It is a slick way to carry it, you can carry just about any rifle in that position without any issue. And it's quick to engage. If you're used to latching your arm through the sling you can actually do that as you get the pistol grip into your hand you can then take the sling and roll your left arm through it if you want to lock it up. If you're inclined
Last Sunday, on the 2nd day of regular, I got a 7 point buck, with about a 240lbs body, with my 336w 30-30 lever with 1 shot, about 75 yards, while it was running. 1 shot, down. I don't need some fancy pants synthetic rifle lol
I've always considered the 7.62x39 to be first generation update on 30/30 win and 300 B.O. supers the most "up-dated" 30/30 Winchester. Not to slight the 30/30 but most are now more familiar with AR's than lever action.... I definitely am, in general I would probably use 350 legend AR. Able to wring out slightly flatter trajectory. 👍
450 Bushmaster . Nocks them down on the spot. No runnin . No trackin.
I have enjoyed harvesting a white tail with my tricked out stainless super Blackhawk in 4 5/8 with Speer gold dot hp bonded bullets. Last distance was at least 70 yards with .44 mag. I needed another person to help get the deer in the tall bed of my 4x4
.308 Safari works absolutely great for whitetail, black bear, and long horn .
Choosing 300BLK over 223 has more to do with your choice of barrel length. If your barrel is shorter than 12 or so inches, you’ll loose a significant amount of energy/velocity with a low-mass round like the 223. 300BLK lets you retain a significant amount of energy with very short barrels. And short barrels provide benefits of maneuverability and concealability. 300BLK is also better for suppressed firearms because if you want to get more benefit from your suppressor, you run sub-sonic ammo. And again, with a slower velocity round, you want to increase mass to retain energy (and more significant terminal ballistics).
I use the Marlin SBL .45-70 for everything. 250 grain hollow points all the way up to 687 grain hardcast is some extreme versatility in one rifle.
Always awesome when you Barrel sweep the camera man
Have my Dad's Marlin 336 in 35 Rem . Its an old carbine and caliber but still packs a wallop.
Style is every thing!
While I'm sure the 300 Blackout works just fine, it has all the class of wearing chest waders to a ball room dance.
I've got a pump 30-06, that is just as good as my trusty 30-30.
My dads buddy flushed a big doe that he almost stepped on in the brush when I was a little kid. He hip shot it with a lever 32. I’m proud to say that same gun he sold to me for $132 when I was teenager. It’s still my favorite deer gun today.
Joshua Hartle- I'd love to find a lever action 32 to add to my collection to deer hunt with, they were popular in the Northeastern US where hunters used them on Whitetail deer and Moose(from what I've read)but they never caught on in the South(where I'm from)and subsequently are impossible to find here.
Truth be told, I've been a Sportsman since I could walk. I learned how to hunt and fish before I even started school. I have a host of what would be called deer rifles. However, I have taken way more deer with my 30-30. If I have taken 500 deer over the years (just a round number to make my point), roughly 475 have been taken with the 30-30. 💯💯💯
Don't forget to pickup your brass to reload
Having grown up with lever guns, after 60+ years they feel like an old and trusted friend. I've always thought there's just something 'right' about firearms with integral magazines.
When ever going into thick brush I Have always ran a short single shot 12 gauge with 3 inch slugs never did me wrong
7.62x39 is a better option. Cheaper, more readily available and with better ballistics than 300BO.
.300 blk supers are basically a pointy-er 30-30 anyway and the subs are just better flying.45 acp
I actually hunted a thick patch of woods this year with my usual Marlin 336. I've had a scope on it for years and but where I was hunting this year was so close in I was missing opportunities trying to find the target in the scope. So, I brought my AR with a red dot and got a deer on the walk in.
I shot my last buck with my 8 inch 300 AAC pistol while still hunting. Shot quite a few with the model 94 and my tirdy ought six as well though
Whether it a model 94 or a 336,I have theorem 1895Marlin in 45-70.love me some lever guns.300 black out,no habla
If I were going to use a .300 Blackout in an AR platform, I would not use a scope, a holo style optic makes more sense in "white tail woods".
Unfortunately some states don't allow semi autos for white tail. They are a little behind the times so the 30/30 will live in here for a while.
There are plenty of lever guns for whitetail being made besides 30-30. Such as 243. Win 308. Win 44. mag 50. Smith n Wesson. 45 Colt. 300 savage. 223. REM. 6.5 Creedmore. 38-55. And 35 Rem. I’m not sure how many more they are currently making but…. Lots of choices.
I dont mind a sling on the levergun. But I despise a scope on a lever action...
The lack of a sling is easily rectified with a tactical scabbard.
Happy hunting 🤗
That defeats the purpose. I think your missing the point of not having a sling on it.

I prefer Marlin '97 in 44 mag Then add in a 44 mag revolver S &W M29 or 629 61/2" barrel Ruger Redhawk 51/2" barrel
Would even go up to 454 Casual lever gun revolver combo
Love my grandpas 30-30 such a beautiful rifle
But that new Henry 300 blk lever action, now that's something
I love he just whips out a 300 blackout lmao
I use a 450 bushmaster AR
300 blk is better for whitetail imo as long as we’re under 300 yds with little to no wind. I’d be tempted to stretch 30-30 out to 350 maybe on a perfect day but it wouldn’t be super ethical.
Well there's so many in that "30-30" power class of rifle that are nearly interchangeable in deer hunting. 350 legion, 6.5 grendel, 6.8 spc ... 7.62x39 was the OG in the modern sporting rifle. I would say the 300 black out is the least powerful of them, not under powered but the least of those options
Well that escalated quickly
The 30-30 is used a lot here in PA. Most shots are less than 100 yards. Where l hunt 50 yards is a long shot. There is no need for a cannon. I killed a doe a couple years ago at 10 feet. That one was damn near self defense. The really good thing about a 30-30 you don't ruin a lot of meat.
that camo gun sharp
I don't need to be a commando while I'm deer hunting in brush country. I'll just stick with my Model 94 .30-30.
My great grandpa left behind his Winchester model 94 its been in the family since new has harvest many animals in it life from pigs around the farm to pesky coyotes out on the pasture and I don't see it leaving anytime soon
Truth is anything the 300 blackout can do so can the 7.62x39.
I Love my 300 blkout
350 Legend..
Not even close, the 30-30 has way better ballistic. The blackout lacks reliable expanding bullets, I've seen countless deer lost because of a blackout and I hunt in Florida where the deer average 100 lbs. The 30-30 is just proven!
They don’t lack expanding bullets people just don’t want to pay for the hood stuff.
Hundreds of videos about what one can get that is equal to, or better than a particular firearm they currently use. While that is true, I'm one of those that is a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Why would I want to go out and buy a .300 blackout when I am perfectly satisfied with the Marlin 30-30 that I have used successfully for many years now? I'm not knocking the Blackout. I hope they sell millions of them. But I'll stick with what I have since it does the job quite well for me.
Yeah the model 94 in 30-30 is a perfect thick woods and brush gun as long as it says Winchester Model 1886 .45-70govt. on the barrel haha LOL!!!!!
Until you are in an actual survival situation. A lever gun is vastly more durable and requires less maintenance. They are just better for long term in the woods.
I don't care what people say the Lever Action is just as much America's rifle as an AR is if not moreso.
Get a proper built AR in 350 Legend and it's worlds above a lever 30-30
I use a my 30-30 or 35rem. If I took that 300 blackout style into the woods, I'd probably get arrested.
I can't find 30-30 ammo anywhere...but I can find .44 magnum for my Ruger 44 carbine!
I picked up the 44-Mag, a little lighter than my 30/30 and easier in the kick' department.
This is good
300 savage is the way to go for a brush gun model 99E
My pap always said there's been more people K!lled with a 22 and 30-30 then any other round and or gun
Yes, it's tacticool but I'll stick with my lever guns : )
Love this channel
I have the buffalo bill octagon barrel 30-30
I don’t think 300 is designed to shot out of a 16” barrel 😂😂😂
Growing up always had a lever action 30-30 in the outhouse at deer camp 👍 but ues it did have a sling on it right next to the bag of lye 😂
Stick with the lever gun, open sites in brushy area, never use scope only gun ,it will cost you a lot of deer.
30 30 is twice the cartridge that a 300 blackout is
There good till you see a deer passed 125 yards, should just stick with the 30-30 with leverlution bullets atleast then you can shoot up to 200 yards
Only problem being the spitzer style of bullet vs the round nose when going through brush, they tend to tumble easier
That’s largely a myth anyway. Blunt and round nose bullets are affected by brush as well. The term “brush gun” actually relates to how handy a rifle is to carry in the woods
Hence The name "brush gun"
Im personally a 30-06 kinda fella
I just ripped a tactical shart.
Nice ar15 I want one like that
Oh yeah, you guys need to wait for hunting season
350 legend demolishes 300blk just as light and handy
300blk out of a 10in barrel is as effective out of a 16in barrel. Youre going to have to do some serious work to make anything lighter than a barebones 300blk 10in barrel with 5rd magazines
My model 92 chambered in 44wcf or my colt lighting chambered in 44wcf are my good to for white tail
i still will use a 30-30
Ruger 44 mag deerslayer
Friends don't let friends hunt with fugly rifles.
You look like Jim Scoutten
"Greetings, yall! Ivan Milat here talking about firearms"
No scope on a brush gun. IMO
Not in Ohio... can't hunt with a 30/30 or blackout
Why did the Remington pump rifles never become as popular? I know many in Pennsylvania liked them for years. I've never understood why people love the pump action shotgun. But that popularity never seemed to translate to the rifle? And vice versa . Other than the Winchester 1887, lever action shotguns are not really a thing?🤷🏽♂️
.44 magnum lever gun better than 30-30 in same barrel length?
😮😮 even that's too long ... Wyatt Thompson Center arm .. chamber for 3030 or 303 when you're good to go
My favorite is the BAR 35 Remington, can you do a story on the 35 Rem
What is that brass part on the gun called? I know what it does, but I don't know the name. My dad had a 30-06 lever action that had the same thing before it was stolen. For the life of me I can't find one anywhere
