Thanks I just went out and brought a bag of sunflower seeds - I’ll add some to my feeding routine 😊

Thank you for that tip. I feed my hens black oil sunflower seeds all the time but was grinding it up in their food too. Wasted feed was the result. I have switched thanks to you. Much better! From Tennessee, Julianne

Thanks I’ll be getting those for my hens! Will black oil sunflower seeds slow egg production at all?

My hens are bold in there back but I don’t know if it’s molting or the roaster so have 4 hens and one roster the hens are the only one that has bold spot n there back like just skin and I’m scared that the roster might kill them trying to mate is that possible. I did but the hens saddle some told me I don’t have enough hens it’s my first time having chicken I did increase the protein for them I will buy sunflower seed and feed it to them separately

Hi Juan, it sounds like it’s probably from the rooster. If you are not wanting to hatch chicks you don’t need a rooster. I ended up getting rid of my rooster for that exact reason, all of my hens had bald backs and were very stressed out.

Is it normal for them to molt in spring? I've got a Rhode island red that is losing feathers like crazy and all I'm finding on it is fall molting. She gets a mix is her normal feed with seeds, meal worms and of course scraps. She's healthy beside the feather loss

It could be her going through her first molt which happens around 18 months old. It can sometimes take quite a while for them to grow all their feathers back in and so if she seems healthy otherwise I'd just give it some time. Just be sure it's not other chickens picking on her or from stress.

@@AudreysLittleFarm well she's doing much better minus the bald belly area and she's back to laying eggs again. I didn't know age could be the reason for molt as all I've found on it was for the fall of the year. I did treat her and the pen as well as other chicks for mites in case. And she is the bully of the yard. She is meaner than mean to the others. They've just learned to leave her alone and give her wide berth. Thank you for the info it helps so much!!
