Hopefully we get the AAA review system in place for next season.
That's assuming a zero error system. The league uses a 2 inch buffer for grading and margin of error, so this one is probably not getting overturned. Also, just a bad approach on all 3 the strikes of the at bat.
yeah, I mean how can we survive when an umpire calls a pitch 1 inch off the plate, while the batter swings at a pitch that was high and looks at another that was clearly in the zone? Brutal
@@stephenkasper6081 At least how I would manage that would be the MOE only goes for grading the umpire. So in this situation it would be possible for the umpire to be wrong and review correct it but in the grading system the umpire considered correct.
I think we're at least a season or two from full integration at the major league level since it's the first full season of use in AAA and they usually test things for at least 2 full seasons prior to bringing it into the majors
Completely agree. I was at a Triple A game this year and players could challenge balls and strikes. MLB should allow this next year. The system worked perfectly. It was very quick (like the tennis challenge system), and there were no hard feelings. In the game I saw there were 5 challenges and 3 were overturned.
During the top of the fourth tonight, the Mets booth replayed the ejection and said that Burger should have gotten his money's worth (sound effect).
Weak ejection. I’ve seen bigger helmet slams that resulted in not even a violation. On top of that the call was wrong. In cases like these, either the umpire should be fined/suspended as well or the player shouldn’t get fined/suspended.
You must have been some umpire back in your day.
@Niel2760 If you mean an umpire that understands emotions, fairness and justice, then yes, you’re right.
I can't decide whether or not I like that Schumaker only comes out to get the boot after a player already has. It didn't look like he had time in this one, but I'll have to revisit the rest.
This was a bad ejection. Should have warned Jake Burger and not ejected him.
I probably would have issued the equipment violation here. In the case of Schumaker, he left the dugout to argue balls and strikes, so Schumaker should be ejected.
Eh, the helmet slam right there in front of the ump is just too much. If Burger had just said something and got a quick hook I'd be more inclined to agree.
I never officiated baseball, but I was known to have a fairly low tolerance for dissent in my soccer reffing days. I tried to give players an excited utterance or two on a call when I could. There is going to be some emotion and it's natural to be unhappy with a call. The tougher the call the more leeway I usually gave, but there were exceptions where a player, coach, or parent went too far right from the jump. I also usually took action if they were still complaining about it 5-10 minutes later...
He should have called the pitch right
i would LOVE a video on your take and explanation as to why there is a rule that you cannot argue balls and strikes. i can think of *some* reasons, but would love to hear you talk about it
Well, for one, we might never get out of the first inning.
@@CloseCallSports yeah this has to be top argument, you could have gripes with every at bat. forget new pace of play , this would of made old game times plummet if people argued every possible pitch.
@@Davidtjr36
@CloseCallSports
but wouldn’t the pitch clock eliminate this? if the pitcher argues, his clock runs out and suddenly he’s behind in the count. same thing for the hitter. and if a hitter who struck out ruins it for his upcoming teammate, well…
I never researched why umps and refs became a thing, but I have an idea. An unofficial “league” in the early days was just backyard sandlot baseball, accrued a lot of fans who learned the game a little, and players argued with each other too much (at this day in age no balls or strikes since usually pitcher would have to toss a meatball to let him hit) on close plays, so they asked some fans to watch and break up disputes. Turned into people asked to do it on the field for a little money, then when the strike zone became a thing, there was too much chirping going on even for someone who’s asked and paid to settle the dispute, creating ejections and the rule that you can’t argue balls and strikes, we’ll be here all day. If I was a volunteer/low paid guy doing it to have a little fun in a job, I wouldn’t wanna hear it for 9 innings.
@@seanmaher3401 The entire reason that any sports officials exist is because games and sporting contests must have an unbiased person enforcing the rules and administering the game. Think about the last time you played a sandlot game of some kind or heck even a board game and there was a violation of the rules and an argument ensued between the competitors. Maybe it was a close play and maybe it looked this way from this angle or that way from that angle. Or maybe there was a rule enforced incorrectly or a rule that should have enforced was not. We're always going to to argue a close play or an unusual play to our advantage. An official or umpire will not. Do you know the base awards in baseball verbatim? It's important. A pitcher who throws the ball out of play on say a pickoff play for instance when they are in contact with the rubber versus a pitcher being off the rubber and throwing the ball away is not the same base award. You need an unbiased expert of the rules, one who has no rooting interest in the outcome of the game to know the rules, apply them correctly and through their training and experience use their judgement as correctly as they can when it is called for.
Oh man. I was waiting for this one.
And, my thoughts here is why I am not surprised here?!
This was a bad strike call & ejections all in one by the home plate umpire! 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Timestamps:
⏺️ 0:18: Correct strike call there.
⏺️ 1:01: I knew it! A bad strike call on Jake Burger.
⏺️ 1:03: A very understandable with the hard throw down of the helmet & bat at home plate.
⏺️ 1:06: And, right on cue, Jake got tossed!
⏺️ 1:09: Miami Marlins Manager Skip Schumaker comes out too little, too late here.
⏺️ 1:32: Marlins’ Broadcast - “Burger and Skip Schumaker have a grip. That is a huge at bat…” Jeez, you think?
⏺️ 2:03: As expected, Skip got tossed, too.
⏺️ 2:09; 2:52: A replay of Jake Burger’s ejection.
Another point to add: It’s time to add a ball-and-strike call challenge because this is getting borderline ridiculous! However, as I said previously, the league won’t allow it! 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
It’s just a matter of time for change in the rules, and challenge systems. I hope…
post the Noelvi Marte out call against Cleveland
So is deJesus becoming the next Angel? 😂
he really is, primarily because he is just as arrogant in refusing to adjust - he has to stop calling pitches 2 inches off the plate as strikes.
Phillies Star Bryce Harper was ejected by Angel Hernandez tonight as well!!
Oh I just know this will be good 😂
Schwarber and Harper now have history with Angel
Harper didn't even swing at that pitch so dumb
There's a video now.
Why is there a “buffer zone?” Either it’s a strike or a ball. Did I miss the video that explained that?
Because the technology is not perfect as some people believe.
I believe Hector Neris was ejected in Seattle 2 nights ago? It was unclear on the broadcast.
DeJesus may have been trying to give Burger a warning for the bat when Burger threw his helmet.
He didn't slam the bat down all that hard, so I'm wondering if maybe he said something.
@@XXelpollodiabloXXmaybe no force in the bat but using equipment tosses to show up the Ump in disgust of the call, can be an equipment violation
Oh the poor ump, he has been disrespected by a helmet hitting the ground from 12 inches away! How will he ever make it?@@seanmaher3401
@@seanmaher3401 Yeah, I know. But usually they will give a warning for the first offense and then toss him if he does it again. Like if he tossed his bat then slammed his helmet. So I'm just speculating that he said something to the effect of "That was a [equine excrement] call..."
10 ply ejection. That helmet wasn't anywhere close to being severely tossed, blue's ego just can't stand a player correctly expressing frustration with his bad call.
There are appropriate ways of doing it and this isn't one of them. While it may have been better to issue an equipment violation here, the umpire was within his authority to eject him.
@@vincentwendt720 Of course he was within his authority to eject him. The question is whether the ump is soft for doing so. 10 ply.
Well, you got a good one to do with Harper.
Harper was right about the call, but my god you can't behave like that.
@@sfan2767Given how egregiously bad the call was, it's understandable. Calls back the Schwarber getting ejected by Angel last year. Sometimes it's just so bad you have to blow up.
@@hbk314 imo there's no call bad enough to excuse Harper's behavior. Especially in what is effectively a meaningless game given the Phillies are locked into WC1.
It seems to be one comment that all umpires are bad. Even there was only one home plate umpire in this game.
These umpires come up in high school and college ball and then the A / AA / AAA system and learn very quickly that if you want to go home some time today, you need to call some strikes. They also learn that they can expand the zone wider, but not taller, because the angle from the dugout gets them into a lot less trouble for calling pitches off the plate. That gets hard-wired after so many years of calling it like that. And so now these last few years you have this computer zone that coaches can look at on the tablet and see how far off you were, and so now you have a massive complaint. I have always called it by the book, thinking that if the coaches don't like it, they can adjust to my calls and/or change the rules. And the high school strike zone rule book has changed over the years, believe it or not. It just strikes me as the height of arrogance by this umpire not to adjust his zone to the rules. He wants a quick game and is going to call balls as strikes and to hell with the rules committee, just so he can get out of there an average of 10-15 minutes sooner than the guy who is humble enough to call it as directed. They need to have the computer call everything and just indicate what the computer called.
This computer generated strike box on tv is for entertainment purposes only!! It has been proven to be wrong many, many times!! Just the camera angle should let you understand that it is not accurate! The box does not move up and down for tall or shorter players either! Altuve and Judge have the same zone according to this system!! Therefore,, it is flawed and unacceptable!! Your welcome!
Not according to Close Call Sports, a great channel for the umpires' perspective.@@stevehamman4465
It bothers me how that heave-ho looked practiced. Like Ramon practices them on off days...almost perfect form...🤔🤔🤔
"perfect spot for the challenge system" NO... This is a perfect example for why umps should not be calling balls and strikes. ABS system means you don't need the challenge system in the first place. Calls like this might send teams to the playoffs or prevent teams from going. We need the ABS system in MLB next season.
I agree. Why take half a loaf (the challenge system) when the entire freshly baked loaf of bread is right there for the eating
Umps need to be told to ump like holberg did in that WS game. Set up where the catcher is, NOT the opposite area.
Computers can be wrong too, which is why challenge is being tried BEFORE all computer. There are a number of videos proving tech is not perfect.
@@mbdg6810 sure computers can be wrong at maybe .1% and human umpires are wrong at least 10%, and I'm being generous. Know which one I'd pick.
@@mbdg6810 Umpires always set up in the slot. That is what they are taught and it is the best place to be.
So, in what universe, is this not an equipment violation?
Wow! Both of them are ejected from the game. They were arguing with umpire. He has been warned for not to try be arguing with umpire. You have listened to the umpire. Just accept it! You had respecting your team. Just stay on the game and follow the rules.
I love how these umpires setup so far inside that they cannot see the outside part of the plate! Laz Diaz is an expert at this.😵
Have you ever umped a game behind the plate?? I didn't think so !! SSHHHHHHHHH😅😂
@@stevehamman4465 I umped two of my brother's little league games in 1983 when I was 15 (he was 12.5) and no umps showed up. After volunteering, a man gave me the clicker, brush, mask and the big pad to stay behind and told me where to put my neck and to tuck my arms inside the pad so I didn't get hurt, and wished me luck. That was my training. That was 40 years ago and I still haven't been paid (LOL). Went OK behind the plate but I was awful on the bases and some adult kind soul came out of the stands to help me. But parents at whose house I had eaten lunch and whose older sons were friends of mine were yelling at me when a close call didn't go their way. I decided I wasn't going to ump again ever. I live in a different town now, and here, we have 13-17 year old umpires. Some are good and some aren't, and the training is more than what I got but not much, but also done by adult volunteers who don't follow up. My kids are older now and I coached them all and I never ever argued once with a kid umpire, most of whom I knew because I had coached them when they were younger or they were friends with my kids, AND IT WAS LITTLE LEAGUE! IT WASN'T ABOUT WINNING! IT WAS ABOUT FUN FOR THE KIDS. PERIOD.
The umpires are exactly where they should be and can easily see the outside part of the plate. You should not comment on something you know nothing about.
Personally, I might have just issued an equipment violation in this situation, as opposed to an immediate ejection for Burger. However, Skip Schumaker's ejection is pretty straightforward. Leaving your position to arguing balls and strikes is not permitted. If after being warned Schumaker continues for the plate, he should be ejected.
He taught Harper well.
how much longer till we have a computer call balls and strikes? i'm tired and weary of human error with attitude. fix the problem
Watched this game. Ump De Jesus missed several obvious balls way outside. Ump mistakes are a part of the game, got it. But, they shouldn't be THE game decider.
They aren't mistakes. He knows they are off the plate. He didn't just miss them. He intended to substitute his desire for what the strike zone should be over the direction of the rules committee. I'd rather have an umpire who tries to enforce the rules properly but makes mistakes now and then, than an umpire who intentionally calls these balls strikes just so he can get out of there early.
Nice frame job by the Mets catcher. Fooled the ump big time.
I agree. Many umps seem to be trained to watch where the catcher receives the ball.
If the catcher receives the ball in the imaginary box with the top line across the shoulders, the bottom line across the knees, and the vertical sides between the right shoulder and right knee, and left shoulder and left knee, then they call it a strike. If the catcher moves, the umps' strike zone moves. But as we all know, it shouldn't.
Umpires are horrible. Too much power they need to take them from
The player's conduct is also horrible. If player's are going throw their equipment, they should get tossed. I would have liked to see an intermediate equipment violation but umpires do not have to warn.
Ump knew he was wrong; thats why the quick run!
The player also threw his equipment. It's a standard for removal.
Challenge system wouldnt have helped this one, it was instant
Welcome to MLB....also known as the Ump Show. De Jesus was so excited to show his ejection skills. Ridiculous. We should have a challenge system? If only we could take the technology that would be used for challenges and just use it on every pitch. Hmmm....
That ump is way too thin skinned to be at the MLB level, needs to go. And I don't care if this is the first ejection all year, no place in the game for that.
The league shouldn't be allowing players to abuse the game equipment like that. I would have like to see an equipment violation, but he doesn't have to issue one.
Maybe the ump thought the helmet might hit him.
Seriously im so done with these people whining over a correct call, swinging a ball out of son about the same inches of the zone just up.... thats ok though but umpires have to perfection
Umpires don't have to be perfect, but they can't have such poor control over their own emotions to eject someone for such a mild reaction. MLB has favored showing off emotions by players, with bat flips, etc. but still hold on to this equipment rule. Players have been breaking bats over their knees for a million years, but a helmet smack to the ground is somehow the line?
Well he shouldn’t have slam his helmet hard like that it may have broken it. Maybe he said a bad word down there. Bad call on the umpire and a double bad on the player. Nice bye bye by the umpire. They need to throw a lot more babies out before the season.
Get rid of these extremely bad home plate umps!!!
