- A beautiful March day in Texas and we took full advantage of it and flew the old 1948 Ercoupe. Remember, every time someone subscribes and rings that little bell another student pilot will get their wings. 😎

I was supposed to go for a ride in the prototype when I was five (sitting on my father's lap.) The pilot was my mother's father, Henry Berliner (after he lost his right arm in WW2!!!) We were on the factory airstrip, when someone landed a plane right on top of us, and clipped the tail. I didn't go up in the Ercoupe (prototype) until I was 14, and my 12 year old sister had the second ride. The pilot was Phillipe Aukenthaler (sp?). Not long after, he was piloting it in a rainstorm, ran into some phone lines, and crashed it. He walked away with everything but his teeth. However, the prototype was a total loss, except for the propeller, which decorated the front of my parents' home for many years. Glad to see the plane is still appreciated.
This is abobut the most hilarious aviation video I have ever found. My family and I were in stitches. It is also soothing, and beautiful in a prosaic way ... and I love how democratic the Ercoupe is.
My dad a big fan of the Ercoupe sent this to me today. Thanks for posting it however it did choke me up. I so glad you captured video of our friend Dwain.

Hi Dwain, Great video of Jim flying the Ercoupe. That Ercoupe is a great little plane.My dad got an Ercoupe back in 1950. I was only a few years old then. That's one of the easiest planes to fly. No rudder pedals. Won't go into a spin. Wish they still made them or something like them. I'm paraplegia paralyzed from the waist down. To old to buy an Ercoupe now. If I was a young man and couldn't walk I'd have one. Thanks for sharing. JC

Nice video I am going to solo today if all goes well ( and at 50 years old....). I am looking to possibly buy one of these I like the looks and characteristics. The history of these planes is also very cool.

I new of a guy who split his rudder skins and inserted some trailing edge profile skins to increase the size of his rudder by about 2 “ all the way around , giving him much better rudder power. Then he proceeded to remove his elevator up stops and adjusted to a heckuva lot more up elevator,thereby totalling violating the Type Cert Data. He did stalls, spins ,basic aerobatics until one day his spin went flat and he spun all the way down to the California wilderness of Cucamonga... !!! He survived the crash with serious lower back injuries... walks kinda gimpy style today but still flies...!!! Said it flew delightfully but he got overconfident in the spins and held them too long ... it almost killed him, destroyed the plane !started a small grass fire and that. fortunately attracted Fire Fighters to the crash site...!!!

I believe there's 2 of these little airplanes parked by a hangar with one runway between between Barstow California and Victorville just a few 100' off the road to the West westside. As a truck driver I've noticed these 2 little airplanes for a little more than 20 years I've never seen them move maybe they do. As I stated there's one runway running parallel with interstate 15 so.
Those 2 planes, I have seen there for over 40 years, they took engines off about 15 years ago. They are North American Navion.

Jim nice video. Sorry to hear about your rudder pedals being mangled. I have the same problem with my fuel cap on my 1946 415-C

Whoa, that was news to me that the Ercoupe would go into aileron-reversal in a power-on-stall. Apparently it was news to Jim as well. The saying always was that it didn't have enough elevator authority to do that. Wonderful demonstration.
+pinkdispatcher Hi, keep in mind that both Jim and I are both semi
experienced aerobatic pilots. Now what is the first thing your flight instructor tells you to do when you are in this condition? Pick up the low wing with rudder!!!! So why was Jim churning butter with the ailerons? Well, most Ercoupes have no rudder pedals so our buddy Jim set the airplane up for the classic departure stall and as the wing stalled Jim tried to correct a slight drop in the left wing with right aileron. Keep in mind the wings have stalled and there is a drop in the left wing that Jim tries to correct with aileron. That left aileron dropping down increases the AOL and aggravates the stall further causing the left wing to drop more so Jim adds full aileron and what do we see? The Ercoupe,by now departs into the entry to a left spiral at best but a left spin at worse. Imagine a pilot, low to the ground in full panic mode by now, freezes with full aft yoke and full right aileron but is horrified as his airplane departs into a left spin. The best insurance is to get some spin training, training in unusual attitude recovery is a big plus too....Marc
+Dwain Marcus Yes, thanks for the reply. I know what goes on aerodynamically, but that's a very different thing from experiencing it in flight. I plan on getting some aerobatics lesson some time, including spin training. Most flight schools don't do it these days, because apparently more people got killed during spin training that from inadvertent spin entry.
My brother has a scarecoupe, he loves it, your wing, though seems much nicer. That fabric is smooth! His is aluminum (it's the Alon).

I did not hear the Aircoupe such and such departing runway 22 I believe and remember keep the centerline in the middle on take off down the runway. I doubt if I can fly this airplane with 255 lbs at 75 hp?
How much do you guys weight? I didn't think the Ercoupe had a payload that could handle two adults. It is because of the 85 hp conversion? What's the manufacture's recommended payload?

You could paste a fake (paper) mach meter on the instrument panel, with a warning not to exceed mach 1.5.......
Awesome video! I was the Cessna landing on 17R that you were following. It was a BEAUTIFUL day to fly. I posted a video of today's flight as well. You can hear yourself around 15:12 in my video. Great seeing the same situation from different perspectives!

You have no restriction in the fuel pump, judging by all the air bubbles in the fuselage tank gauge riser tube. When you emptied the wing tanks in the last minutes of the video it looked like a freshly opened bottle of club soda. That fuel pump is supposed to be restricted to only deliver slightly more than the fuel burn. You're probably beating those check valves to death. It's either that or your wing tank finger strainers are clogged and it's cavitating. Either way, it needs to be looked at.
Very nice. In terms of performance I guess the Ercoupe is pretty close to my little Socata Rallye 100ST, and just like it, it's a ton of fun to fly and great for sightseeing. But I'll have to wait till summer to open the canopy in flight. It's still around freezing here.
But I got to fly a bit in recent weeks; still editing the videos. I now have two action cameras, and in one case I took along a photographer who shot with three additional cameras, handheld and dashboard-mounted. It'll be a while.

Take a look at the title! FYI, there was the Erco Ercoupe and also the Alon Aircoupe.
