Why do we need both IP and MAC address?

  • On a TCP/IP network, why do we use both IP and MAC address?
    In order to answer this question, we need to answer these two questions first. 1) What happens if we just use MAC address alone, and 2) what happens if we just use IP address alone?
    MAC address tells us “who” you are which will never change, and the IP address tells us “where” you are, which can change. Both IP and MAC address makes sure the message is delivered to the right device on the right network. They work together perfectly in TCP/IP world.

    Thank god some one finally explained this. I know what they are, how they are assigned, where they come from, where in the OSI layer they are, how to trouble shoot them, the list goes on. But I have trouble explaining why we need both, and no one can simply answer that question. It's always, Mac address is a physical address and IP address is a logical address blah blah blah.... thank you for making this video, now I can explain it too.

    Any plans for a video on how to *change* a MAC address?
    For example, I tried connecting a usb-lan-adapter (ASIX AX88179) in a linux virtual-machine (windows 10 host), yet when when I try ethtool it says the device doesn't support eeprom access.. yet it's the asix driver lists it as supporting eeprom/ethtool writing!

    What I don't understand is why the MAC address is first in the frame. If IP is where you are and MAC is who you are, wouldn't you need to know where you are first?

  • @jcz6692
    @jcz6692 5 років тому +1

    impressive. I agree that MAC is useful and efficient for local communications. Imaging a couple of hosts which don't attach to ip, how can they communicate with each other? how can they identify themselves in a local area network?

    • @sunnyclassroom24

      MAC address would be enough if there are only a couple of hosts. That is exactly how local communications are designed.
