Trump's tariff war: madness or masterstroke? | The Daily T Podcast

- The US looks set for a trade war with Canada, Mexico, China and possibly the EU.
President Trump looks to have started an all-out trade war with his closest neighbours, after threatening 25pc tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico.
He’s also put a 10pc levy on Chinese goods, and said he “absolutely” intends to impose tariffs on the EU as well.
The intentions of these protectionist policies? To crack down on illegal immigration and the cross-border supply of opioids like fentanyl, as well as the prioritising of American industry. But will tariffs actually have the opposite effect and drive up prices for everyday Americans?
Tim Stanley puts forward the case for Trump’s approach whilst Kamal argues that the net effect on the US economy will be negative. Camilla isn’t sure either way.

I found your program unserious. Trump is threatening Canada’s sovereignty.
"We have all been advantaged by China's export of deflation"....except possibly western industrial workers
Not up to Telegraph standard. Disappointed
Madness. This should have been your shortest video by a long mile!)
'what do we sell? a bit of cheese.. some whiskey'...
'why not put more than 10% on China'....
...my god, these people are so misinformed!
Your lack of knowledge is astounding on this subject . China is already subject to a 25 % tariff . Add 10% makes it 35 % .
They are racists and used to double standards😂
100% on Chinese electric cars
@@0nFootsound like that should be termed a Musk Tax .
@ buy Merican or pay double
Can Tim please have a regular appearances over the next four years to do Trump impressions for all major US news events? :)
It's so painfully cringe listening to clowns personifying entire countries
Yes! holy hell this is bad. Saying she would back Trump over Carney is LAUGHABLE!
It’s not about Trump it’s about the American people who voted for Trump enough is enough.
Maybe the US should produce food that's edible in the UK and cars we want to drive, not hormone laden beef and Ford Rangers.
How can Canada or Mexico stop illegal migration into the USA? Our police cannot arrest people for 'thinking' about illegally crossing the border. Any that are caught, must be released. Neither country's border agents can enter USA territory to arrest migrants that actually succeed in making an illegal crossing. We respect the rule of law, unless someone is suggesting that we arbitrarily detain them without charges.
I want someone to explain to me why the media and corporate interests say the US using tariffs is horrible.. but then why do all these other countries have their own tarriffs?
It's not Trump using tariffs, it's him tearing up his own renegotiated NAFTA treaty so he could bully Mexico and Canada.
This will do incalculable damage to the reputation of the US as a reliable ally. A very welcome New Year's present for President Xi.

Very bad program. Who is the producer of this. Expected more from the telegraph. Get your facts right.
tominey, thumbs down, had enough of her on GB already. He doesn't know where the UK is , muppets his nan is British and he owns a house in London
What!?
Global chaos on it's way.
I really like the intelligent discussion. Unfortunately at least 2 of the hosts were blessed with splendid ignorance about many subjects touched. Just reading the daily news throughout (maybe subscribing the telegraph AND reading it?) would've enlightened them enbough to make the discussion worthwile.
I thought Ford was American? Meanwhile actual American cars would finally overload the remaining roads in the UK and the whole place would grind to a halt.
The Fords on our roads are made in Belgium, Germany and Spain...
@ But where does the money go?
Weren’t Vauxhall a subsidiary of General Motors?
Masterstroke… Seriously ?
For a conman? Probably. And shame on those who collaborate with him to normalize him.
Mexico just proposed the send 10 thousand troops to the border to deter illegal immigration and illicit trade of fentanyl. Masterstroke or not, it works to the USA’s favor. Just last week, the President of that banana republic whose name escapes me for a moment offered the use of their presidential plane to deport illegal migrants from the U.S.
propaganda pundits are ready to lick the boot of their sponsor same way Zelensky shifted the narrative towards Trump.
These people should not be speaking with authority
China already has tariffs. They're adding 10% more
.😅
I don't regret Brexit. Its never been implemented correctly.
classic
@@0nFootany Brexiteer still supporting the outcome of the referendum has a serious learning difficulty.
Now what’s a tariff again?
Just kidding
Free trade has done Kamal a lot of good But just try going to see the people of Sunderland and tell them that 😮
Would Kamal make it out alive😅
Who can watch Tim Stanley without becoming totally nauseous!?
"Thank god for brexit"...
What a detached tool she is.
Telegraph channel has become the best comedy show in the UK
"We have gained". Some people didn’t.
Yep, I can take him around my factories in South Carolina in around United States that did not benefit
What has actually happened to Camilla Tominey? I remember only a few years ago, she was considered a prim, slightly snooty royal correspondent. She’s gone uber gammon. Her views have lurched into the most ridiculous right wing territory. She’s discredited herself so much by lingering in the guttural end of GB News. It’s like she’s totally lost the plot.
Tim's trump impression is up there with the shane gillis' of the world
My father-in-law always said that fear and greed motivate men. Let's just see where Trump ends up with this strategy.
America doesn’t have actual walls we have oceans.
As a convicted felon I don’t believe Trump is allowed to travel into the UK… that’s a challenge
Tim - correct on Mexico, wrong on Canada. Trump 'wants' Canada to come under the US
So now canada and Mexico have to protect your borders i thought that was your job
Tim Stanley is a lightweight but he did say one thing I liked. He said he had not been able to find a single piece on the left or the right that agreed with his article. Thank goodness for that!
"Trump's tariff war: madness or masterstroke?"
*masterstroke*
Um, Note to apparently clueless male presenter: The 10% tariff on China will be IN ADDITION to those tariffs that ARE ALREADY IN PLACE.
I think we can rule out masterstroke. The guy declared bankruptcy running a freaking casino.
Trump declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it is a recognised business practice in the US...
lol. Took less than a day for Mexico and then Canada to cave.
@@vintage910 Last I check we also backed off. Keep drinking that kool aid.
@@vintage910 it was trump who backed off..
@@dethtongue945 They gave him exactly what he was asking for. The only kool aid here are those that don't want to accept that American DOMINANCE is back, and working!
Trump believes in the “two consecutive terms” interpretation. He’ll try for 3 for sure.
It will come to the UK next
Multi billionaire Donald Trump's expensive hotels and resorts worldwide should be boycotted. By the greedy without human conscience so-called wealthy and the richest.
The customer is king
Simple.
Eggs are $5-$6 mate not $12
Nyuk nyuk nyuk! Meanwhile in China it is announced that price reductions en lower tariffs will be applied to Mexico and Canada.
I can see amusing forms of tariff-evasion through parallel trade through Canada and Mexico running thinly through Trump's ill-fitting depends.
So if uk chooses usa then eu tariff for uk? :D
I'm favoured $130k every 4 weeks! I now have a good house and can afford anything and also support my family

Thanks for the nice video. We all know that the digital market is creating a different revolution in the world economy. I make up to $45,000 per week trading in the digital market. Having a job now doesn't seem to guarantee complete financial stability. Instead, having multiple sources of income that don't depend on the government.
