Given KTM’s recent challenges I think they need to be more price competitive and as a sign of goodwill drop the Try before you Buy features and just bundle those with the standard bike. They need to win back some credibility.
dont understand why people are hating this display. better having a slightly bigger screen with navigation functionality instead of having to put your phone every time on the bars
Its good to see the got rid of the cutouts in the head and valve cover for the cams, this should have been done a long time ago. That seal likes to leak. I have a 2020 890 R and the valve cover gasket has been replaced and still leaks a little bit. Say what you will, I have had my bike on the dyno and I was impressed with my numbers. This was just one time with 3 runs and could have varied with more runs but I turned 126 hp and 76 lbs to the wheel and its amazing.
Love that screen… very practical if you can split the screen between navigation and riding info. Hopefully with all the reliability issues KTM have been exposed for, they will now support their customers better with this bike.
That seems like a change in philosophy for rear suspension on a street bike. I like the exhaust routing. The whole design looks like it would make a good scrambler with maybe good rider comfort.
I swear motobobs channel is a perfect example of motorcycle content stagnation: a guy reading spec sheets from a brand who just bumps up capacity every few years and calls it an update while not addressing reliability issues. Amazing.
So...the new look is a vast improvement over the standard 990 Duke. I was quite underwhelmed when I saw that bike in the flesh - all that matt black on the engine, frame ,seat, tank; it was way too monochrome. The use of an orange frame and white side panel really makes the bike pop, IMO. But it won't get much traction in the market until KTM fix the mechanical and PR disaster of the cams etc; so far 0 out of 10 for honesty and customer engagement. And with bikes like the MT-09 coming in A$ 3-5 K cheaper they won't sell many in Aus. And to take up on cornelliushoffman below, "Who is this bike for"..... not many riders downunder.
@@fearme46 Don't get me wrong, I like the Duke and Duke R line, but the Super Motard thing has never really taken off in Aus, at least not in Victoria. Have a look at BikeSales and there are plenty of 890 and 990 Dukes still in the dealers showrooms. Yes there are plenty of 390's around and some big V twins, but I only very rarely see a Duke. With the list price of the 990 at just over A$20K the R will probably have a list price of A$22+, which is more than A$4K over the Yamaha MT-09-SP. On top of that there are the camshaft issues widely publicised but not acknowledged by KTM. Finally, the Duke R is being promoted as a track focused, pants on fire weapon. While I would love to have all the nice bits on a bike in my garage the reality of a combination of price, zero tolerance law enforcement, and the lingering smell of reliability issues is going to make it hard to sell the 990 R to any but a handful of KTM die hards, track day warriors, or wealthy individuals lucky enough to put one in their games rooms.
@ respectfully, the Duke isn’t a super motord, it’s a naked. They are nothing alike and, the naked bike thing is massively popular. You say you don’t understand who this bike is for? Yet you just named KTM die hards, track day warriors and wealthy individuals? You literally just described thousands of customers… I think people need a break from the comment section and get out in the real world. Just cause the keyboard warriors here can’t afford one of these doesn’t mean thousands of people can’t. I’m from Victoria and see Dukes all the time. Now I definitely understand what you’re saying about their recent reliability issues and maybe some people skip out on this model and go straight up to the 1390 but, this bike most definitely has a market.
Since brand new bikes are getting quite of a luxury item these days that people with normal wages can not really afford anymore and bike manufacturers and stores are shooting them self's in the foot right now because these insanely high prices are making a HUGE drop in bike sales, It would not surprise me if this 990 DUKE R would cost over 17 000€ brand new =( Maybe in 5 years you could buy it used for closer to 10 000€ but until then a Duke 890 R used will be the way to go sadly
Massive, expensive TFT screens on track focussed bikes? Replacement cost for that after a crash would be huge. Why does everyone want a stupid iPad for a dash it looks shit
Bottom line is the price has jumped and the reliability and trust has tanked. Sad story that doesn't end well. I don't even think I've seen a 990 riding around.

I’m 52. Been riding bikes for 40 years. Every type of bike. The standard 990 and new 1390 are the two standout best (road) bikes I’ve ever ridden. I’ve been waiting for this R model! I’ll ride it to work. And on the weekend between cafe rides, motard, motocross, enduro and other stuff on my other bikes. Same LC8c base engine = small chance overhead cams are toast at 12k miles. Why take the risk when they still haven't officially admitted to the problem on older models? And their customer service has a long way to go... It is a shame, because it is looks like good spec bike..

For that sort of price you can get an MT10 an S1000R and even the superb Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 non factory.

320 mm rotors on the front for the R version then. The regular 990 has smaller rotors at 300mm.
