    A bit late to this but GeekGardener, this is one of best explanations I have come across. Simple and very easy to understand. Do you have something similar on EC, its importance, why it jumps and how to manage this?

    Very elaborate and enlightening. Never heard or knew such indepth info on pH. Thanks for the video. Will be eagerly waiting for the next part/s. Please come up with more videos as such. Had been your student from the start as I purchased my first hydroponics system(Raft) from you. From there I had come a long way and still learning. After lots of initial and recurring failures I have succeeded in growing a few batches of greens and herbs. I will be DIYing an NFT system this very month in indoors. It will be my first step towards commercial venture, a small pilot project. I had a few training but none were as elaborate or technically satisfactory as your videos are. I want to learn from you so let me know if online Training is available.
    I should tell you I sometimes use sodium bicarbonate for pH Up. Usually it's pH down that I have worry about but lately it's been the former. I know it's not a healthy practice but would still want to know it's positive or negative impact on my plants. Thank you.

    • @TheGeekgardener

      Thanks for your very kind words. Hydroponics is all about paying attention and learning and understanding every single day as you rightly said.
      Regarding the usage of Sodium bicarbonate, excessive sodium is not good for plants. hence I dont use it much.

    I want to use rice husk as main hydroponic media. Can I use it: a) alone, b) carbonized alone, c) mix with suitable media such as sand, compost or coco peat. Thanks for your advices

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  3 роки тому +1

      I havent used Rice husk as a growing media in my growing trials. But I have seen it being used in several farms outside India. Rice hulls have high amounts of Silica and some amounts of macro elements for plant nutrition. I think it can be mixed with cocopeat and used.
      If you get it in plenty of quantity for affordable price then it can very well be used as a mainstream growing media

    sir, if i use daily for ph down.. will the vegetables have problem coa of these chemical reaction?

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  3 роки тому

      Using pH down daily in small quantities is not going to impact the crop much, considering the fact the plants are going to be absorbing nutrients and that will also be constantly topped up. Periodically its good to replace the solution to ensure there is no imbalance caused in the nutrients.

    Can you balance pH by using combination of plant such that they release ions such that they release acidic and alkaline both

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  2 роки тому

      I dont see why not. But the plants themselves go through various absorption profiles. I have tried in the past to grow a fruiting plant and leafy in the same system. Fruiting plant absorbs more cations rendering the solution acidic. this will balance out the anion absorbing leaf greens in their vegetative growth. Tricky but doable

    Where from we can get ph adjusting acid or solution. How much acid/solution to add

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  3 роки тому

      ph up or down can be easily obtained online. It can be made using phosphoric acid or potassium hydroponics.
      How much to add is determined by testing a sample. it depends on many factors such as dilution of acid, type of acid, water quality etc.

    Can acetic acid/ vinegar be used for bringing pH down? Vinegar is easily available and cheap hence would be great if it can be used, at least for a home grower.

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  4 роки тому +2

      Koustubh,
      Acetic or Vinegar can be used. But they are weak acids and may be needed in higher quantity to do the same job.
      Use phosphoric acid to have better control

    • @koustubh1511
      @koustubh1511 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheGeekgardener thank you so much for the response. I am shifting phosphoric acid soon.
      Also a side question - can acetic acid react with calcium and form calcium carbonate? Because I observed the solution turn whitish a day after adding vinegar

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  4 роки тому +1

      @@koustubh1511 acetic acid when it reacts with calcium nitrate in the nutrients will form calcium acetate. The whitish precipitate you see is probably from carbonates from hardness of the water.

    • @TheGeekgardener
      @TheGeekgardener  3 роки тому +3

      Hi, You need to definitely add nutrients to your tap water if you are intending to use it to prepare nutrient solution. Whether to add acid to adjust the ph or not really depends on the ph after you add the nutrients to the water. There will usually be a shift in pH due to the addition of nutrients.
