Do Updates REALLY Matter?

  • This is an older opinion piece video that I've been sitting on for a while - but I'm surprised by how much I still feel the same way. Do the updates that we've come to expect from tech really matter anymore? What are good reasons to update and are the updates actually making tech worse?
    Regular programming will return soon.

    Security updates matter, they always have and always will. Feature updates matter for most software that isn't eol or mature.

      Security updates matter but not nearly as much in Linux or MacOS. You could install Linux Mint and never update, run it for 6 years and never get hacked or infected. I don't recommend that you do...but you could.

    • @AlucardNoir

      @@dragonballjiujitsu Windows is the low hanging fruit when it comes to hacking. Low hanging because not only has it lost slightly over 10% to MacOS over the past decade allowing Macs to reach 15%, but it's lost another 2-3% to Linux over the last three years. To make things worse, most of the internet is run on linux, so if you ever hear of a server breach... chances are it was a linux server that got hacked.
      This and the fact that an unfortunately ever increasing number of infected apps have been found on the official Google and Apple stores for mobile seems to indicate hackers are moving away from a windows only approach to more "holistic" malware propagation vectors. To paraphrase an american TV presented: And you get infected by malware! And you get infected by malware! Everybody get's infected by malware!

      @@AlucardNoir Sure you CAN infect Linux and MacOS. But your odds are about 3-400000 times less likely than on Windows or android. I ran a computer repair shop for over 15 years and NEVER seen an infected Mac or Linux box. Has a browser hijacker on a MacBook Pro once (has nothing to do with the OS) Linux is a much gater target than Windows simply because it runs all the servers. Its simple far more secure , number of users not withstanding.

    I've used rolling releases and newest distros for quite long time, but these days my interest is mostly on "as long as it works and keeps working". Now I have lmde on my laptop. I like Debian base and cinnamon there seems to be very stable even though apparently they're very new. Bit same with Windows. I have 11 on one desktop, but at especially at work upgrade to it has been waiting there for months already and I don't feel at all upgrading it unless necessary. Like I hate modern consoles at my age. I don't play that much anymore and every single time I feel like I get firmware upgrade that takes minutes and when it's done and I try to open some game, there's like 20gig update for that. Destroys completely my idea of convenient and easily accessible gaming. I'm definitely going to keep using PC in future as even as they have updates too, well at least I use them so much more that they're usually done on background. If someone suggests those always on features, nope I'm not going that way on my little usage as consoles take surprisingly much power from wall with those features on. I'm not willing to sacrifice that convenience on my electric bills.

    Here's my perspective as a Windows user - yep, same for me. But I do think it's just that software got way worse. Maybe tech has hit some sort of peak. The same story goes for phones, how every phone from the past 10 years is almost the same with minimal design changes and only spec bumps. On the OS side of things, I remember the jump from Win95/98 to XP, it was like going to Mars. And then when Vista (and later 7) came out, I think I jizzed my pants, like it was unreal. And now, with 10 and 11, it somehow looks and performs worse?! I used to be very excited for every new release, I was in the insider program and all that stuff. But then after I realized which times have come, I've become very jaded. Now I'm even going to do the unthinkable and go BACK to an older version because the new one for some stupid reason broke the explorer. I still update programs, at least they are still worth it.

    I guess the main desktop environments are now mature enough. Familiarity has a value of it's own. Although I wonder if we're seeing much innovation from the newer, smaller projects.

    The reason things are as exciting as they were 10, 20, 30 years ago is that Linux has matured to be a rock-solid, stable OS. And you're getting older. We all are. The same thing happens in all relationships. You've been together for years, got to know each other deeply, figure out each other's quirks, and then the "magic" is gone. But what's left is something reliable, something you can count on, something that "just works".

  • @artim96
    @artim96 3 дні тому

    Yes, beyond security updates and bug fixes, there isn't really much to go around. But on the other hand, I'm lucky that that's the case in the Linux world, because I think Windows shows you best what happens when devs get bored and have to push out shiny new things just for the sake of having shiny new things, even if they turn out to basically just be user-hostile.
    And when it comes to AI, it can be helpful, just not for everyday life, at least not for the moment. But that's mostly because it's either insanely expenisve or dead slow. We would need some giant leeps in efficiency and performance increase for both training and applying AI models for them to become any useful. Maybe then we'll even be able to create LLMs that can answer based on facts and knowledge and won't just pull something from its ass. At least for research it sounds very helpful if you could find any piece of content about topic x, no matter what language it was written in and what form (web page, pdf - either machine-readable or needs to be made machine-readable for automatic translation - video or whatever). And for both scientific work and day-to-day life it actually can be helpful to be able to build your own kind of "local knowledge graph" to remember e.g. in which document you put what or on website you read something about a certain topic. It just has to be done better than stuff like Windows Recall.

    You should take a look at COSMIC DE. This is a really good step forward in different areas.
    On the topic of AI I totally agree with you. I don't get this AI hype for the things we are ATM doing with it. AI is nice for chemistry and biology with folding or improving proteins and enzymes, or forecast of earthquakes and stuff. But not for "generate image A" or "write me text B" 🤦‍♂️ ATM AI mostly just generates CO2.

    Yes, I have 10 raspberry pis desktops that can't update because nobody bothered for at least two years. It stops in time, and if it breaks, nothing works and nobody is going to help you. Full backups are more important, tho.
    Edit: At some point, the desktop design matures, and you focus on the critical stuff :) Performance, compatibility, stability. I personally love the level of synergy that the Android has with Windows.

    There's many factors. The OS is kinda got to the point where the bulk users requirements are met, so anything after that pretty much just be another spin of the same wheel. Plus users themselves are much have cognisant of what they need/use and already have them installed. I previously didn't want AI on my computer although a local copy would be useful for the average hobby programmer and in general learning within other fields so I don't get hyper spied upon if I use online AI. Updates necessary for security of course and I agree app bug fixes.

    I always update; however, I do agree there isn't much to get excited about. I also dread the proliferation of AI because, like you, I have yet to see the #gamechanger use case for it. To be honest, I'd rather see fewer updates (other than security/bug patches). Why mess with something if it works?

  • @JanVerny
    @JanVerny 4 дні тому

    I can't imagine using something and not wanting it to get updated. Yes, not every change is good, but also the not everything we have right now is good. I would rather deal with a new UI that maybe breaks my specific workflow, than be stuck with bad things forever.

  • @CedroCron
    @CedroCron 3 дні тому

    I always delay feature updates because it seems today the user is the beta-tester today and things aren't properly tested or refined before being pushed out. When it comes to security updates and critical bug fixes, those are absolutely reasons to update right away. I wish that you could just get bug-fixes and security updates separately from feature updates. Some operating systems do a great job of allowing this and others don't and force you to update everything or nothing at all and that is really frustrating because in order to be secure and to have annoyances fixed you are forced to also at the same time be forced onto the latest features which most of the time I don't want and aren't 100% refined to where it should be when its pushed out.

  • @NewNiklas0803

    Maybe the focus of the video was wrong. I think it could be better if you had the question "Why did updates become so irrelevant?" as a focus point and just give some reasons why it's like this.

  • @Pyro-Moloch

    I've always had the mindset of "if it works, don't fix it." Even back in my Windows days, I always abstained from updates unless necessary. In my experience, there is always a chance updates will break something that was working perfectly before.
    Regarding new versions of distros, I feel like there's this idea that they have to keep changing, introducing new features and such. When in fact, it might simply be the fact that they're good enough. Not everything has to keep progressing. Personally, I'm using the same layout on my linux that I had pretty much back on Windows 98. With the exception of some QoL improvements, I don't really think the changes to the UI in the last 20+ years have been a good thing. But if the mindset is always "we have to evolve" then you're gonna end up with some weird creative decisions like when Gnome got rid of the taskbar and tray.

    I agree about security updates and features in apps,desktops don't matter to me as much and as for AI ,well that is a total waste of effort as it can't spell or talk correctly and often gets it's facts wrong. This is just hype for the benefit of the industries trying to make us believe we need something we can live without.
