Hoobastank The Reason Reaction
You know it's better now that it's not played every hour on the hour, like it was when it came out.
That's probably what made me hate this song back then
This is a valid point. The song was beyond ubiquitous, but quite obviously had merit. 🙂
Holy crap so true
Last Christmas actually is a well produced song too...
But had way too much airtime
Abso-freakin'-lutely
Yea gang, it's a pop-rock track and a bit of a leap from my progressive videos but as a composer, I still love digging out the "why" from songs that are just huge hits. More Opeth, Messugah, and Devin Townsend coming up!
No explanation needed Sir. However, I understand 🙏🏻 Regularly jump from Death/Black metal to Mariah Carey without a thought, my kids love ABBA & Iron Maiden as a result. ✌🏻
It's cool man, not every band you comment on has to be good 🤣😘
Damnit. Sony got to your Townsend vid. Really wanted to see your reaction to that one.
Stand by - might have a work around :)
I am sure you are seeing a lot of 'meh' responses in the comment (I've been scrolling through.) I think I can shed some insight, especially considering the fan base you have drawn with the Proggy stuff. This song occupies a weird spot in the development in my musical tastes (and by proxy, likely, the tastes of many Millenial Progheads). A lot of people were drawn to Hoobastank from their first hit "Crawling in the Dark," which had a flavor much closer to hard rock. This song was so much different in tone that it was jarring. Add to that the fact that it got SO MUCH main stream play (you'll never meet a true prog rocker who likes that haha) that it turned a lot of their original fan base off.
BTW, if you're looking for a band who was able to make this kind of shift in tone effortlessly, check out Incubus song, "Drive"
I consume 90% metal, but I can appreciate the breaking down of a song like this. It's part of the educational process I enjoy about the channel.
You gotta be able to respect good song writing, whether it's your genre or not.
Nice work! 🤙
Agreed
Nail on the head
For real
I'm right there with ya, bro. I'm all about some metal, but what can I say? This song is solid gold.
I can't applaud you enough for having the guts to review this song and post it. Hoobastank gets a bad rap undeservedly, which I suspect might have to do with their horrible name, but they're truly an incredible band, a marked step above the average pop-rock group. This truly IS a great song and band despite the backlash, and I'm so glad you posted it so fearlessly. Much love to you, my friend.
wtf? Who shits on this band? These guys are great!
@@yadevk8025 They got shit on so hard back in the day. Undeserved unfortunately but some people can’t get past the band name and just shit on them no matter if they’re actually good or not.
Much as I appreciate the jokes about how overplayed it was, the guy just hitting the one piano note, the pandering broadness of the lyrics, etc., I still love this song completely unironically. Just hits me in the soul every time.
Man I don't know if I can listen to this. My mom passed away a few months ago and she was very young. Every song has a new meaning now. It hurts knowing how different I could have treated her. I tried so hard to be everything she wanted me to be. She spent so much strength in raising me and now she doesn't even get a payoff. Still, great video as always. p.s. I always love your positive attitude and I think what you do for kids is fantastic. 👍
My sincere condolences for your mother.
Love, love, Hoobastank. This song always stops me in my tracks. It's so real, raw, and full heart.
Can we get a reaction/analysis to VOLA. More of the world needs to hear them!
Gutter Moon by VOLA
Do 'Running Away' by Hoobastank. Another amazing track that never gets the credit it deserves.
thanks I forgot about that song.
Would love if you react to "Crawling in the dark", that one is brutal! Keep it going sir, you're making me go to sleep pretty late at night looking and learning from your reactions, but I love it! 🙌
I saw Hinder, Chevelle, Hoobastank and Nickelback in one show. All were amazing. Nashville. I took my teenage daughter. Her idea.
That's so awesome. I have a 1 year old girl. My only child. Hope to have an experience similar to yours one day. Just waiting for the good music to come back..
I really appreciate that you react to the song and not the music video. I watched a few TheReason reactions and you’re the only one that focuses on the music. Others were just talking about the video. The video is so distracting. Anyway. Good job. You’ve earned a sub from me ;) And yeah, I’ve always loved the harmonies on this one in that bridge. So glad you pointed that out 💙
Please react to Tool- Eulogy
I must second that request!!
Do every Tool song in existence... Lol
I really do love his voice.
who else came in thinking "this is a change of pace" and ended up singing along when the chorus came in?
I sang the entire song and couldn’t help myself! 😝
@@Nanno00 He talked in the video about the harmonies coming in. When I listen to this song there are harmonies the whole time.
love this band and song. brings back memories
Chevelle - Self Destructor, it's new and awesome
hey Geebz, one song which has always melted my face and flowed through my core is "Clocks" by Coldplay - so simple, yet simultaneously metronomic and organic - that bass line, and the changing dynamics - just such a cohesive and thickly-produced track - would you be able to do a video on it?
yo clocks is soooooo good
Dude, you're just a lot of fun to watch. The technical appreciation coupled with the genuine reactions (plus the Hawaiian vibe) is a good formula. Keep rockin.
I like this kind of video, gives me a reason to listen to songs I liked and learn about music. Win-win for me :)
Really trying to learn how to block out vocals. After finding this channel I'm loving my favorite songs all over again. There's so much more going on that i wasn't paying attention to. Thank you
Alright, that's it! I'm getting me a pair of K240. Thanks George!
Listen Dude, you and your style here is Badass and legit. You are kool AF and super knowledgeable. Most reaction tubers are lame and amateur. I really hear you and enjoy all of your vids. We could talk for hours. When I launch into an examination of a piece, talking about the arrangements, personnel, anecdotes, etc. my Wife, in particular, roll their eyes and yawn. Other than musicians and industry pros, most people just want to feel, and that’s kool too. That’s why we make music. Great Job Brother!
Wow, Jamie - thank you, really! Big smile on my face all day now :)
One thing about this song that is very interesting is that the high harmony in the chorus actually goes from a third to a fourth (“for me” has a third above it, “to be” has a fourth above it). Fourths are not common, but it gives it a really unique tension.
I love your breakdown of the songs you review. It's things I never would have paid attention to really before and Hoobastank has always been a favorite of mine and I like how you look at all different music styles. I really think you'd enjoy Unleash the Archers. Aloha!🤙
Ok. I’m not trying to be weird . And please forgive me if it comes off a bit much . But , your face makes me happy 😊 I love how you feel each note - it’s written all over your face . Is as if you want to talk to it ... that’s very cool . I really appreciate you today. Happy Easter ✌🏽
Oh man the singer gives me Brandon Boyd vibes ♡
Thank you. I love how you broke it down. This is one of my favorite songs. Its a face melt for sure.
I saw u posted this and it went down now it’s back lol
Yea, it got blocked and I had to replace and re-export the video with a static pic :)
Great reaction and great song! Love your axtell puppets too I have the turtle, the dodo and the koala!
I will dedicate this song to my daughters when they are at the age to understand or something personal to them like their weddings.
Great nostalgia wow so glad you did this breakdown
Can you do a react to Mastodon it woud be amazing.
When I went to huntsville al.to basically say goodbye to my sister who was in the last stages of breast cancer, this song came on when driving back to Birmingham for my flight back home... I cried the entire way!!
Somehow I have never heard this before. But I really like it. What a beautiful song. Thank you for doing this and exposing people to new music!
First reaction on youtube I've seen where the listener is reacting to the music , not the video. The rest of the so called first time listeners need to watch this.
55.5 Thousand Subscribers..!

And once you hit a million subscribers I'll still be here supporting you homie..!
You're literally my favorite reaction channel on the entire internet..!
😙💨 . . . *Cheers* . . . 😚💨
Love the reason ❤
I've always liked this song but never realized there were strings in the background till now. Beautiful!
Wooow. This throws me back to PS2 Singstar xD
Ohh the childhood memories
Curious as to your opinion and/or experience with Linkin Park's music- haven't seen them on here yet! Could be interesting!
I really think we Need a Decomposition of the Halo Theme Song. Are you familiar with it?
Especially Halo Reach ost
@@suncommander7102 Steve Vai right?
Blow Me Away - Breaking Benjamin
in the UK we had "Dakota" by Stereophonics, and this track seems like the US-equivalent in terms of composition and popularity
This is one of those guilty pleasure songs for me (Crawling in the Dark even more so), haha, plenty of those from the 90s/early 2000s era.
Same
Crawling in the dark is the shit
This dude gets it
It's genuinely great music, you should feel no guilt whatsoever about enjoying it.
wow at one part you got teary, & started crying. i had some feels . LOL first time hearing this song
3:58 I knew you would do that, your face said it all🤣🤣🤣
And just like that I am a fan and a subscriber
This song truly melted my face 😭
Nice hairstyle Mr Geebz, keep being awesome!
P.S.: Support his "Kids Mission" (he goes into hospitals and makes children smile with his puppets) by visiting his other channel @bz , his paypal or venmo :-)
I absolutely love this song! I always wanted to listen to an acoustic version, a cover if it were, but something other than the studio version, and not too long ago the band recorded one such version and it is incredibly good
Check out the acoustic version the band did it’s really good. Really emphasizes how great the harmonies are
It’s face melting because I used to like this band...
I've heard this song a million times. I never noticed the strings. Wow.
Loved your feedback on the song I don’t mind you stopping and starting cuz I came to here from a expert
Love the shirt you are wearing man !
All the music you react to gives me Nice Dreams. 😉
Also, notice that a 5 string bass was also used because we hear the low Db and low B in each chorus. The use of the extended low range makes it sound more powerful
I forgot about this song.... even though i've heard it a million times in stores, movies and radio.
Even though it isn't my jam it is sonically pleasing.
Also that cheech and chong shirt confirms some on my suspicions.
Well, first time hearing this for me! Not my genre, but totally appreciate your breakdown and insight on all genres
Who knew Michael Scott became a composer after leaving Dunder Mifflin.
Came onto your channel today through the Disturbed, sound of Silence video.
Very refreshing content, subbed.
Please do more songs off this record. Hoobastank is one of the most underrated bands ever.
Hey Geebz, still waiting on another Opeth reaction.
Appreciate what you have done to this point.
Coming this week :)
@Key of Geebz .......Hell yes. Looking forward to that.
May I suggest Face Of Melinda, Bleak, Harvest, The Drapery Falls, or Blackwater Park.
Please, nothing off of 'Heritage', 'Pale Communion', 'Sorceress', or 'In Cauda Veneum'.
Many thanks for what you do.
I appreciate the videos immensely.
Even though I have literally not listened to or heard this song in at least 10 years, every once in a while it gets stuck in my head and I hate it for that. But goddamn if I can't help but respect that fact. Edit: I will not be watching this video by the way. I will like it however.
This is the first time I ever put out a request, but I’m genuinely intrigued to what you might have to say about Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails, so I would be extremely grateful if you found the time to cover it.
There's a song I think you'd enjoy dissecting and I never see anyone cover it. It's called Wet and Rusting by the band Menomena. They have a pretty unique recording process for how they collectively make an album. Cheers!
The Dear Hunter "A Night On The Town" please! your face will melt, prog rock with a real orchestra, an amazing singer/guitarplayer/songwriter and a very good production...
Please react to LD50 by mudvayne
Yes!!! 'Prod' would be sick!
@@WesleyThibodeau thats exactly the song I had in mind actually
oh thank god I'm not "the only one" that likes this song... at least coming up as someone who likes metal/prog/jazz music. Glad to know this song is actually good good and shouldn't be ashamed I like it 🤣🤣
never expected this. straight nostalgia haha.
check out night verses - "copper wasp" playthrough if you get a chance 🐝
Hoobastank are actually one of my favourites. While they're a bit middle-of-the-road, for me its what I listen to when I need something unoffensive but still has some energy and a cool vibe to it. Plus some of their heavier parts, while very simple sound so good especially with the way they use the 5 string bass to go 2 octaves below the occasional guitar chord.
Baby Incubus! love both bands!
Whatever your thoughts on the music CLA pretty much banged out a perfect mix
Please don't appologize to the holier than thou crowd please, like you said on so many other music decompositions, it's your channel. Damn right it is!
Thanks for keeping the horizon wide and open. I enjoy your views and explanations of the songs you are in love with or are touched by! Keep 'm coming, as varied as possible.
My suggestion for a decomposition: anything from the GRP label of yesteryear (Fusion/Jazz Rock), Kayak (a Dutch symphonic rock band, I prefer the early years, although their later album Merlin is great as well) or James Carter, a Jazz sax player.
Keep 'm coming! Thanks mate
I saw hoobastank in Philadelphia opening up for incubus in 2000. Got a free cd with their album. I said, who baw how? Lol, great band (were).
I’d like to see your take on Theocracy - I Am
Death - Without Judgement
i think this is the only song you can recognize just from the single note in the beginning
“Welcome to the Black Parade” has entered the chat
Wow !! I thought this was a joke !! First and only time I've heard of this group and first and last time I'll listen to them. But to each their own !! Love your channel !!
What's next ?? Abba or the Bee Gees ?? At least I've heard of them !!
Just messing with ya 🤣🤣
No one ever talks about the gorgeous bass line in this. It adds so much drama.
Cool guy
Of course you can play it with anything, it's one bass note over and over and over and over again, with three repeating over notes. It's note musically great.
Hey please do You lied - Tool 😁
EVERY Tool song..!
Tool - Ticks & Leeches
Try "The Refractory" by Wovenhand
Love this song.
If you love good compositions, please react to The Dear Hunter. More specifically, the song Waves. You will be blown away, I promise.
You have to do Lindsey Stirling. Preferably start with Underground.
I loved this. This is such a great song.
I would really love if you would react to I’m not a vampire Revamped by Falling in Reverse. Even if you don’t want to react to the original I’m Not A Vampire on your channel, it would be helpful if you’d listen to the original first and then video your reaction to the new Revamped version. I really think you’d love it, especially the difference between the two. I think you could really point out what the average listener, like me, misses in what makes it so special.
The lead singer Ronnie Radke does watch online reactions to this. Just FYI.
The thing that's tickling me the most is that you're trying out metal. Personally, as a fan of metal, there are so many nuances overlooked simply because someone, somewhere just didn't like how angry/mean/brutish it sounds.
Thank you for these refreshing looks.
Atom heart mother suite would be a great song to do. I’d be a long video but well worth it
Jaunt - callous standard would be a great song to listen to my good sir. I feel they can use some exposure
I'm gonna sound like the typical prog snob now, but Hoobastank exists in the same space in my head as Nickelback, Hinder, 3 doors down, 5 finger death punch and all the other cut and paste post grunge that plagued us in the mid 00s.
Story of the Year "Praying for Rain"
heard this for the first time when I was like 10 on a pop station my stepmom was listening to lmao.
still enjoy the song, I think same direction is better though (:
hmm... did you see their live show?
Only makes sense to follow this by either Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard or Ignominious & Pale by Necrophagist
Whats up buddy? Haven't heard this song in a week of Sundays! You NEED to check out Riverside - Egoist Hedonist
The guitar and piano are syncopated so that’s why it feels a little off. I learned how to sing this for a voice class a few years back and there are some tricky things in the vocals as well.
Nice! I've always been a fan of Crawling In The Dark by Hoobastank if you think you might want to circle back to them.
Want to hear your thoughts on Covet - Ares
This is random. Have you thought of doing INXS?
