An easier and normal way to determine the swing and hand of a door is: 1. If it is an inswing door, go to the inside and face the door. Whichever side the knob is on is the hand you would normally use to open the door, and how it determines the hand of the door. 1. If it is an outswing door, go to the outside and face the door. Whichever side the knob is on is the hand you would normally use to open the door, which is why it is called that hand. It is the side in which the swing occurs. Hinges are stationary. 2. If the door is an outswing door, stand outside of the door facing the door. Which ever side the knob is on is the hand you would normally use to open the door, which is why it is called that hand. Again it is the side in which the swing occurs. Hinges are stationary.
When measuring door jamb it appears someone has nailed on a 1/4” piece all around the frame on the old door making it 7” jamb measurement. Wondering what measurement I should use. 7” or 6 3/4
Great question. That's something many people might encounter when measuring doors. These odd sizes. If you can find a 7 inch jamb size door. I would go ahead with that. Although you might find that the standard size is usually 6 5/8. That might be the reason that extra material was used.
Sooo I took off my trim before I saw your video.. Door Frame is 1-1/8" all around top and sides Inside Frame Dimensiones 32-1/8" x 80-1/4" Jamb is 4-7/8" + 1-1/8" (I have storm door blocking outside rabbet on frame) = 6" overall Prehung door to order??
Thanks for the question, I've been thinking about it for a few days... Four... To be exact. Sounds like you have a 30 inch slab and most likely a 32.5 x 81 1/4 frame size. The 30 inch slab is normally not a standard size. Standard is usually 32 inches. So you want to make sure that measurement is correct. Send me your door slab measurements and I can follow up.
Thanks for the comment. I tried to show how to measure without removing interior casing or exterior brickmoulding. That's how I measure my installs and thought it might help people out that didn't want to start ripping things off. But you are correct, removing the casing and brickmoulding would give you exact measures.
Best video of all videos, easy to understand and follow.

So what size door is this? It would be nice to have a summary of the dimensions and door size you would need.
um do you happen to be at Richmond, Virginia? 🙂 I need my door replaced!

Aaaand you’re not bad to look at. 😉 kidding. All due respect to your wife or lady. ✌🏼 thanks!
that whole exterior measurement was confusing. why not just remove the casing and get an accurate measurement of where the masonry ends?
