  • In this video I head to the woods, set up a tarp shelter and discuss the UK legal restrictions for carrying knives. Over a cup of tea I make some recommendations for knives that are legal carry in the UK.

    If you have a "good reason" for carrying a fixed blade or locking knife then that's a reasonable excuse to be in possession of it. Camping and bushcrafting purposes fall into a "good reason" for carrying one. Just don't carry it on your hip if you went to the shop and stick it in the bottom of your bag.

      Correct. As good as this video is, the info is not correct.

      It boils my piss that every single video I see on UA-cam regarding UK knife law is completely false when the legislation is easily found and not hard to understand, not only mistaking the good reason part of carrying fixed/locking blades, but the fact they all say for legal to carry folding knives "the blade must be under 3 inches* when in fact the blade can be a bit longer than 3 inches because the legislation clearly states "the cutting edge of it's blade" when regarding the 3 inch or less rule. It might be written in legalise but it's really not that hard to understand lol

      Be careful. I contacted Derbyshire police about this. I asked them if i could carry a fixed blade in a countryside environment where it was clear i would be spending the day doing bushcraft. They referred my request to a sergeant who said “absolutely not, and he would expect his officers to arrest me”. Whilst you may not agree with this sergeant (I certainly dont agree) and whilst you may be found innocent if it went to court, that really isn’t a hassle that i can be bothered with. Best carrying something that meets the EDC requirements

      @PINACI Рік тому +5

      @@purestilton The law is black and white and any police constable not following legislation may open their chief constable to civil compensation claims. Camping and bushcrafting would fall under reasonable excuse so simply carry a copy of said legislation with you to remind any constable of what the actual law is because lets be fair, there aren't many that do these days.

    • @purestilton
      @purestilton Рік тому +3

      @@PINACI Oh yes, the police i spoke to are almost certainly wrong. But i disagree that the law is clear. What does “good reason” actually mean? Only the courts could decide that, and i am not aware of any time it has been tested. It’s unreasonable to think the police should or could know the minutiae of every legislation, so it’s unsurprising they get it wrong sometimes. My concern would be that if i got into some trouble for whatever reason, which is very unlikely to be fair, and the police found a non EDC type knife on me, that would set a very bad image to both the police and to the courts. The UK has a deep cultural aversion to knives. That’s why i only carry a SAK as an EDC, and if i genuinely need something bigger I’ll carry a folding blade under 3”. See what reaction you get if you pull something like a Lanksy World Legal out in the centre of town

    The British "3 piece" MoD army knife is also legal. The chunky one with the sheep's foot blade, can opener & marlinspike. Blade is correct length & does not lock. I still carry my issue one since about 1990.

    Before giving advice about the legalities make sure that you actually know the law. Giving law related advice is not like giving a knife advice. It would mislead lots of unaware people. The advise you are giving is threating our position as knife user in the UK. Carrying a fixed blade in the UK is NOT illegal if you have a valid reason. And going to camping IS a valid reason.

  • @Baldiloks

    You can file the locking tab off the blade on the multi tool. I did this on my leatherman, so now it is legal.

    Firstly love your moniker.! However this stuff about 'legal carry' is much misinterpreted . Most knives are 'legal' to carry.. IF you can Justify why you are carrying that knife!. Walking into Asda wearing a 6" belt knife will get you arrested, but taking the same knife out fishing or camping will be judged differently. I have 2 Ben Orford Woodlanders, love them both but Im not going to pay +£400 for a >3" stainless folder.. not when I can get a SAK for less than £50.

    Great chat mate, 25 years old leatherman, that's some going, I have a swiss army knife, believe it or not it gets used most to open a bottle of beer lol, sometimes to cut string, that's me, a poor user, I really value a good knife though. I have several even a Ray Mears one, that was a personal choice to buy as he's my hero, but owning it does upset some people, that's ok, I like the knife, pricy for sure but a real privelge to own. I always worry about wandering about the woods alone with my knife, some people get the wrong message, so I try to travel stealth like. It's a shame, one day i should like to have my own woodland to work away in peace, thank you for that.

    Im planning a trip to scotland wild camping in september and ill try to make it through the winter months. I will be taking my mora knife thats over legal length. My biggest concern is carrying that when resuppling, ill be going in any shops i pass ever few days to buy food, thats the only minor problem i see with me carrying it. Otherwise id like to think im fine. Maybe ill contact the police about it.

    Wrong. You can carry a knife of any kind as long as you have a good enough excuse. If you're carrying a machete into Tesco maybe not but if you're carrying your bushcraft knife and axe in your rucksack on your way to camp I doubt they would say otherwise.

      Unfortunately not in any public space. On private land it's your business and you can buy fixed blade knives if you are over 18 but in public the knife has to be non-locking with a blade less than 3". Legislation for the few idiots that then impacts the rest of us.

    • @PINACI
      @PINACI 2 роки тому +4

      Yes you can, you can carry a fixed bladed or locking knife if you have good reason and camping/bushcraft is classed as a good reason.

    • @MDM1992
      @MDM1992 2 роки тому +2

      People always leave out the good reason part, no you can't have a fixed blade on your hip in Asda or down the pub, but out hiking, camping, fishing, bushcrafting all fall under reasonable excuse and no judge in the land would charge you as long as you had related items on you to prove you are doing so, if your caught and searched with a bushcraft fixed blade and a hook knife in your bag for example (which the chances of happening are slim to none unless your doing something shady anyway) having a few roughly carved spoons etc in that bag also will clearly show and back up your reasonable excuse for carrying those tools in public, to transport them to and from the woods from your place of residence, which will undoubtedly pass through somewhere public.
